Kids to Camp Sunday Theme: Got Spirit? Welcome and Announcements Gathering Wonder Makes God Real Everyday Call to Worship / Responsive Reading Psalm 8: L/ O Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. You have set your glory above the heavens. L/ You have taught the little children to praise you perfectly. May their example shame and silence your enemies. L/ When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? L/ You made him a little lower than the angels and crowned him with glory and honor. L/ You made him ruler over the works of your hands; You put everything under his authority. L/ All sheep and oxen, and wild animals too. L/ The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. We praise you for the morning and we Praise your word every day. How Sweet the rain's new fall, and the sunlight from heaven, like the first dewfall which you let sparkle the grass of the earth. Praise you for the garden where your feet pass through the flowers. Yours is the sunlight, Yours is the morning born of the Spirit in the Eden of your love. ALL: (Turn to congregation) We ve got spirit yes we do. We ve got spirit how bout you? Sermon Seeds: A testimony from a camper, counselor, volunteer, or director would be a great message. For a sermon, the following reflection is provided by the 2010 Camp curriculum: Got Spirit?: Finding God in the Everyday by New Earth: Christian Resources for the Outdoors. - Throughout the week, campers discovered how God reveals God s self to the human family, especially in worship. Throughout life, worship, and camp, there is an ebb and flow of seeking and finding God, asking and receiving, searching and discovering. The Bible is full of stories, songs, and wisdom of the people of God as they sought the Divine Presence in their lives. St. Augustine of Hippo believed, God made us for God s self and our hearts find no peace until they rest in God. Our deepest human longing is to find God. Spirituality is the practice of seeking God across the span of a lifetime. - The faith of the Israelites changed when they were forced into exile. The people of God had enjoyed their own nation, a great king, and a Holy Temple. That was destroyed when Babylon s army under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzar invaded the land and dispersed the people throughout the Babylonian kingdom. In exile, the Jews discovered that God was their King and ruler everywhere, not just in the land of Canaan. God was no longer confined to the Temple; they discovered God is the Lord of the universe.
- While the Temple was no longer the center of their worship, the people s worship transformed to fit their current life situation reflecting their belief that God s salvation is universal. Psalm 96 declares God s glory among the nations and tells of his marvelous works among all the people. The people were able to put away their old notions of God and worship in awe and reverence despite their traumatic loss. Their false image of what God should do gave way to a deeper sense that God was with them, even in Babylon. - We don t have to lose everything like the ancient Jews for our faith to be transformed; we need only be open to our inner longing for God s action in our lives. The sermon may be completed with an illustration of a time when our understanding of God had changed and how our faith is different, such as a mountaintop experience. An illustration of the mighty deeds of God like the Psalmist writes in 96: 4 6, 10, 12 13 will be an important element of that testimony. God of Wonders Let Us Break Bread Together Chalice Hymnal #425 Sharing Our Gifts Generosity Makes God Real Everyday A Reading from Paul s Letters: 1 Corinthians 12: 1 26 Invitation to Offering: On our 4 th day at camp, our theme was Be a Hero: Give. We heard the story about the poor widow who gave 2 small coins in the collection box. As poor as she was, she gave everything she had as a sign of her faith in God. You may think you have nothing to give, but we all have something whether it is money or a talent. We can combine our money and talents and accomplish big things together. With your financial help, we were able to go to church camp. None of us have jobs to help pay for camp. But we can share our talents with you by presenting this worship service to share the great things we learned at camp. Offertory Prayer: Thank you, God, for your gifts and for the difference we can all make when we all give what we have. Amen. Scattering to Serve Live In Christ s Love Everyday A Reading from the Gospels: John 15: 1 17 Benediction: Lord, Make us all be heroes for you. This week, help us to welcome others, be a friend, accept others, give, rejoice, and share the good news. Thanks for being our hero. Amen.
