CHURCH NEWSLETTER Barbecue Presbyterian Church February 2018 The season of Lent begins this month. The origin of Lent can be traced to the fourth century. During the forty days prior to Easter, new converts to the faith were encouraged to fast as a way to prepare for baptism on Easter. Today, some Christians maintain the rich tradition of fasting during the season. Others strive to give up an attitude or habit that stands in the way of our relationship with God. Lent is an important time of relinquishment but, also, of taking up or maintaining the Spiritual disciplines of prayer and Bible reading. The season also presents us with an opportunity to conduct an inventory of our spiritual lives. What are the areas of my life in which repentance is needed? I like what Henri Nouwen wrote about the season: Lent offers a beautiful opportunity to discover the mystery of Christ within us. It is a gentle but also demanding time. It is a time of solitude but also community. It is a time of listening to the voice within, but also a time of paying attention to other people s needs. It is a time to continuously make the passage to new inner life as well as to life with those around us. I invite you to pray this prayer as we look forward to this upcoming season: Holy God, by the grace of Jesus Christ you know the tests and trials we face. Walk with us. Come to us with ministers of healing and visit us with messengers of hope. Guide our steps as we journey into the Season of Lent; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. In Christ s love, David Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the Devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. (Luke 4: 1-2)

Page 4 Thank You Letter Dear Barbecue Presbyterian Church, Thank you for your contribution of $1,677.56 to the Helping Hand Clinic, which was given in October 2017. Your donation allows us to serve those in Lee County who are of low income and medically uninsured. Last year we assisted many in need individuals with medical series. It is awful to be sick, but to be sick and not able to get help is tragic. Just suppose the Helping Hand Clinic did not exist. Your caring heart and generosity provides the means for our existence and is therefore changing and saving lives. I am always eager to develop new contacts. If you have knowledge of any group that would allow me to present the work of the clinic, please let me know by calling 919-776-4359. Thank you again and may God bless you!
