The opening poses a danger to motorists and pedestrians, especially at night, due to poor visibility. A couple of metal pipes have been placed in the opening to caution road users. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Open EB junction box poses danger Sir, The doors are missing from the EB junction box on the pavement of 19th Street, 4th Avenue, Ashok It poses a grave danger to unwary pedestrians, especially school children who pass by regularly. Will the TNEB officials take immediate action to close the junction box on both its sides to prevent any untoward incident. G. Saravanan, Ashok Nagar CMDA s rebuff to RTI query baffling Sir, The report under the heading CMDA no to RTI query on plan for new commercial building published last week stated that the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has refused to provide the approved plan diagram of a building coming up on Duraiswamy Road, T. Nagar to an RTI applicant on the plea that divulging the details will jeopardize the firm s business. One does not understand in what way the information sought by the RTI activist will harm the business of the firm. The basic object of the RTI Act is to empower the citizens, and to promote transparency, accountability in the working of the Government and to contain corruption. Most govt. departments including CMDA in this case are making a mockery of the RTI Act by either providing evasive replies or remaining completely silent to the queries thereby subverting democratic governance. CMDA s refusal raises questions about its credibility and makes one infer that it is colluding with the builders of commercial buildings who are openly violating norms. On the one hand, the CMDA says that it does not have the manpower to check and curb the widespread violations in the construction of buildings, and on the other, it openly helps the building owners to freely indulge in violations by turning a blind eye even when instances of violations are brought to its notice by the public. Safety is more important than ambience. Shoppers, in their own interest, must exercise extreme caution while shopping in these unsafe buildings as they are real death traps. The audit conducted recently at the behest of the High Court by the Directorate of Fire and Rescue Department has revealed that almost all commercial buildings in T. Nagar are unsafe from fire. The court had ordered the department to install boards at such buildings, but this too has not been complied with. Does this not amount to contempt of Court? K. Harihar, T. Nagar Vadapalani flyover should be extended upto Lakshman Sruthi signal Sir, The Vadapalani flyover on Jawaharlal Nehru Road has reduced traffic congestion to a great extent at Arcot Road junction, but the bottleneck continues at Lakshman Sruthi signal junction. The flyover will be more beneficial if it is extended upto Lakshman Sruthi signal junction on Vadapalani side. Just two pillars are enough to extend the flyover. Then, from there, it can be further extended to Ashok Pillar via 4 th Avenue. Congestion will then be reduced both at Vadapalani junction and Ashok Pillar junction. Dr. K. R.
