Will It Really Be Your Best Advent Ever? That is entirely up to you. Advent, at its heart, is about getting ready to encounter Jesus at Christmas. Opening your heart to him. Getting to know him. Becoming a better husband or wife, father or mother, son or daughter, friend. From: dynamiccatholic.com Dear Parents, December 4, 2015 As we begin a new Liturgical Calendar during this First Week of Advent and come toward the end of the 2015 calendar year, one certainly must pause for reflection and WONDER who we are and where we are as a world. In the 800 years since the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was built, there have been many wars and much terror, but one can t seem to get past the stark November photos of the French military standing guard with their machine guns in front of one of the most renowned holy landmarks in the world. And yet, Notre Dame Cathedral was the only landmark which was reopened just two days after the Paris tragedy while all others were closed so that people could congregate in large numbers to grieve, pray, and give hope to each other while the historic bells rang 129 times. (http://mashable.com/2015/11/15/notre-dame-mass-parisattacks/#t19lt9cs_pqw). "Fight back with strength from within," Monsignor Eric de Moulins-Beaufort said delivering the sermon to the congregation. Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois celebrated the Mass for the victims, for families, and for France. "We ask that grace be the artisan of peace," he said in the statement. "We need never despair of peace if we build on justice." To build on justice is exactly what Pope Francis is urging all of us to do as he launches the Year of Mercy on the feast day of Our Lady s School this coming Monday, December 8. As we try to understand a world that seems upside down, we look, as always, to the perfect model who shows us the way through her quiet reflection and suffering. It seems as if her actions always spoke for her once she said, Be it done unto me according to YOUR will. Our Blessed Mother knew that her son belong to all of us, and she walked that path her entire life, being a doer of the word all the way to looking up at the cross where her son hang dying. One of the many amazing things about the Liturgical Calendar is that is gives us a chance to start over with new enthusiasm as we Prepare Ye the way of the Lord. We allow ourselves and our children once again to have that AWE and WONDER at the anticipation of the birth of the Baby Jesus. It s time once again to LOOK EAST. Let us NEVER FORGET that we only have lives that are fleeting, and that we are pilgrims here for only a short time. Let us never forget that we only have those few precious moments to form our children in the way they need to go. Let us never forget that WE are the ones who must make sure that our children have their faith upon which to rely in all of the seasons of their lives. And let us never forget, that it s only through giving of ourselves to the most poor and vulnerable of our world that we realize the greatest joy and fulfillment. As we prepare for the Christ Child, we continue to hear stories of children and adults alike who are forgoing the elaborate Christmas gifts to give to the poorest of the poor. Blessed Christmas, and let us continue to do our part as we seek true peace on earth. In Him, Elaine Schad, ICCS Principal

DEAN S DISPATCH Paul Cuttica How to Teach Children the Meaning of Christmas We are bombarded by the commercial side of Christmas from late October until Christmas Day. As parents we need to stop, breathe, and be sure that our children understand the true meaning of Christmas. It is our responsibility as Catholic Christians to teach our children about the beautiful story of the birth of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. From infancy our children should be told simple, factual statements; Jesus was born. Mary is Jesus mother. Joseph took care of Jesus and Mary. A non-breakable simple nativity set allows hands on experience for toddlers and preschool age children. As kindergarteners, five year olds can begin to understand that God planned for Jesus to be born. They can be introduced to the term prophet. Isaiah was a prophet who told us that Jesus would be born. A five- and six- year -old can certainly understand that God sent us His son because He loved us. As children learn to read, give them the opportunity to read the Christmas story. There are many beautiful storybooks and/or children s bibles to read. Help them prepare for the coming of Our Lord through the season of Advent. An Advent calendar is a wonderful tool that helps us all prepare for this special event. Family prayer, works of charity, listening to and singing the many beautiful Christmas carols help block out some of the commercialism we are all exposed to. Upper elementary age children can begin to truly grasp the concept of Jesus human form. We can guide our children to realize that Jesus can relate to their lives, struggles, temptations, hopes, and dreams. Involve your children in the physical preparations for Christmas; the decorating, baking, cards, etc. Develop traditions and memories that they will carry throughout their lives. Our preteens and early teens are able to grasp the more complex concepts of Jesus birth. They are able to comprehend that Jesus is both God and man, that Jesus was born to a virgin, and that this was the start of God s plan for redemption. We need to help them understand their part in God s holy plan of salvation. Advent and Christmas is an exciting time for us all. As we all prepare let us make it a priority to instill in our children the true meaning of Christ s birth. Let us establish family traditions and devotions that help develop the faith of our children so that in time they can pass them on to their children. God bless you all and may the blessings of Christmas be yours throughout the New Year. Paul Cuttica Dean of Students
