LIBRARY HERALD Vol 52 No 2 June 2014 Expanded Schedule for Area Tables in Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC-23) for Rendering Indian States and Districts DR K P SINGH* The basic aim of the study is to design and develop a expanded schedule of Area Tables for Indian states keeping in view DDC does not provide the comprehensive coverage for Indian states and districts. The schedule provides more than seven hundred (700) entries pertaining to all Indian states, union territories and its districts. In addition, schedule also provides numbers for places of religious, historical and tourists significance such as Ajanta and Elora, Amarkantak, Amarnath, Bedhaghat, Bhilai, Bodh Gaya, Vrindavan, Dhariwal, Dwarka, Gangtok, Gulmargh, Kaziranga, Khajuraho, Konark, Mount Abu, Mussooriee, Ooty, Pahalgam, Sarnath, Shantiniketan, Shillong, Shirdi, Surajkund, Srirangapatnam, Tirupati, Vaishnodevi, etc. The data for the newly formed states, districts and famous places of religious, tourists have been taken from the Indian government documents and websites. For maintaining the uniformity and consistency, the Areas Table numbers of the famous places are entered according to the principles as laid down in the DDC-23. Gap device has also been applied for future expension. The researcher firmly believes that this study not only serves as a tool to provide the solution to find expanded Areas Tables of India but also make aware the world communities about the states, districts and famous places of India. Keywords: DDC; Areas Tables; Indian States; Indian Districts. 0 INTRODUCTION The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is a general knowledge organization tool that is continuously revised to keep pace with knowledge. The system was conceived by Melvil Dewey in 1873 and first published in 1876. The DDC is the most widely used classification system in the world. Libraries in more than 135 countries use the DDC to organize and provide access to their collections, and DDC numbers are * Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Library & Information Science, University of Delhi, Delhi 110 007. K P SINGH 183 featured in the national bibliographies of more than sixty countries. DDC is also used for other purposes such as a browsing mechanism for resources on the Web. 1 Republic of India is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Burma and Bangladesh to the east. 2 1 NEED OF THE STUDY DDC since its inception has undergone many sea changes in context of growth and development, expansion and revision, relocation of new classes and knowledge. But the need was felt since a long time for revision and expansion of Area Tables particularly India and its states similar to USA and UK. India is considered the biggest democracy in the World and number one in the use of DDC in all types of libraries. The present DDC-23 provides only the Area Table numbers of Indian states, but does not provide the Areas Table Numbers for districts. Hence, the Indian libraries face difficulty in assigning DDC area numbers at district level. This expanded schedule not only provides the areas entries but also helps in revision of the Areas Table entries for future edition of DDC. 2 WHAT IS NEW IN THIS STUDY? The latest DDC-23 only provides Area Tables of Indian states, which are very inadequate in fulfilling the exhaustive need of the classification (geographical areas) particularly for Indian districts. Therefore, this expanded schedule will fill the gap of Indian districts entries. The schedule contains more than seven hundred (700) entries pertaining to all Indian states, union territories and their districts. In addition, schedule also provides number of places of religious, historical and tourists significance such as Ajanta and Elora, Amarkantak, Amarnath, Bedhaghat, Bhilai, Bodh Gaya, Vrindavan, Dhariwal, Dwarka, Gangtok, Gulmargh, Kaziranga, Khajuraho, Konark, Mount Abu, Mussooriee, Ooty, Pahalgam, Sarnath, Shantiniketan, Shillong, Shirdi, Surajkund, Srirangapatnam, Tirupati, Vaishnodevi, etc. 3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The main objective is to expand the Area Tables of Indian states and its districts. In addition the study would serve the following specific Vol 52 No 2, June 2014

184 EXPANDED SCHEDULE FOR AREA TABLES IN DDC-23 purposes: To identify the new Indian states and districts; To prepare a base document of Area Tables on Indian states and districs for incorporating in the forthcoming edition of DDC; To incorporate the newly formed Indian states and districts area numbers as per the provision laid down in DDC; To assign the areas numbers of sacred, historical and tourists significance; and finally; To prepare an alphabetical index on Area Tables of Indian states and districts for quick retrieval. 4 SCOPE AND METHODOLGY The study contains more than 700 entries on Area Tables numbers of twenty nine states and seven union territories i.e., Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshdweep, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha (Formerly Orissa), Puducherry (Formerly Pondicherry), Punjab, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. Study also provides the area numbers of religious, historical and tourists significance places such as Ajanta and Ellora, Amarkantak, Amarnath, Bedhaghat, Bhilai, Bodh Gaya, Vrindavan, Dhariwal, Dwarka, Gangtok, Gulmargh, Kaziranga, Khajuraho, Konark, Mount Abu, Mussooriee, Ooty, Pahalgam, Pathankot, Sarnath, Shantiniketan, Shillong, Shiridi, Surajkund, Srirangapatnam, Tirupati, Vaishnodevi. 3 For developing this schedule following approaches have been adopted: (a) New states, districts and famous places of religious, tourists, etc have been taken from the government sources and districts of India website. 4 (b) The districts of the newly formed state Telanagana have been taken from the official website of PRS Legistlative Research. 5 (c) The districts entries have been entered in alphabetical order under their states. (d) The schedule is expended strictly on the lines/principles as laid down in the DDC-23 for maintaining the uniformity and consistency; LIBRARY HERALD

K P SINGH 185 (e) Gap device has been provided for future expansion of the schedule; and (f) Historical/tourists significance area numbers are also included under their respective districts.
