Jesus as the King who rose THE WELCOME WELCOME Welcome each child as they arrive. Hello. I m glad you are here! Come open the Treasure Chest to find today s treasure. Child unlocks the Treasure Chest to receive a stamp or sticker of a heart. Let this stamp (or sticker) of a heart help you remember Jesus said, If you love Me, take care of My sheep. Teacher s Note: These activity centers are designed to reinforce the lesson through hands-on learning experiences either individually or in small groups with the guidance of the teacher. Choose the Bible Activity Centers that best suit the children in your class. Set up the activity centers around the room before children arrive. Allow children to move freely among them. COLORING CENTER: JESUS LOVE SUPPLIES Coloring pages of Jesus with children, crayons or markers DO Children color their picture as they talk about loving Jesus. TALK ABOUT Who do you see in the picture? (Jesus and children.) Does Jesus love the children? (Yes.) Does Jesus love you? (Yes.) Jesus loves everyone. Do you love Jesus? (Children respond.) How can we show Jesus we love Him? (Children respond.) PLAY-DOUGH CENTER: JESUS CARES FOR HIS SHEEP SUPPLIES Play-dough, sheep and animal-shaped cookie cutters, play-dough tools DO Children play with the play-dough as you introduce the idea of Jesus being the shepherd who cares for His sheep us. Encourage children to make animal shapes with the play-dough. TALK ABOUT Can you find a cookie cutter that is the shape of an animal? What animal did you find? Ask questions such as What sound does that animal make? Where does that animal live? What does it eat? What sound does a sheep make? (Baaa.) Who takes care of sheep? (A shepherd.) Did you know Jesus is called our Shepherd? (Children respond.) Jesus takes care of us, doesn t He? (Children respond.) Page 3 of 11

THE WELCOME continued DISCOVERY CENTER: TAKE CARE OF MY SHEEP SUPPLIES Cotton balls, blocks DO Children care for sheep (cotton balls) as they discuss the idea that we are Jesus sheep. TALK ABOUT In our story today, Jesus tells His friend Peter that if Peter loves Him, He will care for Jesus sheep. Jesus wasn t talking about real sheep; we are Jesus sheep because we belong to Him and He is our Shepherd. I m going to give you a few cotton balls. Pretend they are your sheep and you are their shepherd. What will you do to take care of them? (Children respond.) You can build a sheep pen for them with blocks or pretend to gather food for them to eat. DRAMATIC PLAY CENTER: CARING FOR OTHERS SUPPLIES Dishes, cups, napkins, play food DO Children take turns making each other s favorite foods and caring for each other. TALK ABOUT Jesus cares for each one of us just like a good shepherd cares for His sheep. Let s take turns caring for each other by making each other s favorite foods. What else could you do to care for a friend or for someone in your family? (Give them a hug, tell them you like them, share a toy, etc.) PREPARE FOR WORSHIP It s time for Praise Time. Let s sing a Clean Up Song as we put things away. Praise children as they help clean. Clean up! Clean up! Everybody, everywhere! Clean up! Clean up! Everybody do your share! BIBLE MEMORY VERSE SIGN LANGUAGE (For visual demonstrations, see www.signingsavvy.com) Lord, You know that I love You. John 21:17 Make "L" shape with right index finger and thumb. Move L from left shoulder to right hip as a royal sash. (know) Open hand with palm facing down, fingertips tap the forehead two times. (I) Point to self. (love) Fists closed, both arms move to the body and cross in front of the chest. Hold hands open, as if holding a Bible. Adding sign language or motions to the Bible Memory Verse helps children recall what they are learning. Page 4 of 11

Jesus as the King who rose THE WORSHIP Supplies: Praise music, optional: musical instruments Teacher Tip: To help children identify time set aside for worship, designate a special corner or area for singing, collecting offering, and watching the worship illustration. Play It s Praise Time! as children move to that designated area. Teacher Tip: When telling the children Jesus rose to life or rose again, raise your palms upwards as you say rose to distinguish from the rose flower. For each child, ask Does Jesus love child s name? Encourage class to respond Yes, or Yes, Jesus loves child s name. Does Jesus love everyone? (Yes.) Let s tell Jesus we love Him, too. Let s pray. Have children bow their heads and close their eyes. Dear Jesus, we love You so much. Help us to love each other as we love You. Amen. Another way we can show Jesus we love Him is by taking care of others. When we give our offering, we are caring for others. Sing: We Love while collecting the offering. Delbert and Lello love Jesus, too. Let s call them out right now. Perform The Adventures of Delbert and Lello puppet script or read storybook: Kings & Kingdoms Unit 4, Lesson 20. Lord, You know that I love You. Lord is another name for Jesus. Let s tell Jesus we love Him. Say the Bible Memory Verse together with the motions. Lord, You know that I love You. Jesus wants to hear us say we love Him, so let s do that now by singing the answer to the question Jesus asked Peter, Do you love Me? Sing Unit 4 Bible Memory Verse Song: Do You Love Me? We can show Jesus love by telling others about Him. When we tell others about Jesus we are letting our light shine. Get your lights (pointer finger) out and let s let our lights shine for Jesus. Sing: This Little Light of Mine. Page 5 of 11

Jesus said, Take care of my sheep THE WORD Supplies: Teacher s Bible with bookmark at John 21:16a, picture of the Bible story, toy stuffed sheep Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our Classroom Promise with the motions. With my eyes on my teacher; My mouth quiet as can be, I will listen to hear, How God loves you and me. Point to eyes. Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign. Cup hand around ear. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Let s reach deep in our pockets and pull out our listening ears. Reach in your pocket and cup your hands behind your ears as if listening. Show children the toy sheep. What animal is this? (Sheep.) What sound does a sheep make? (Baaa.) Sheep are soft, aren t they? Allow children to touch the sheep. What do we call the person who cares for sheep? (A shepherd.) Shepherds make sure the sheep are safe and have everything they need. Are you a sheep? (No.) What are you? (A person, human.) Did you know you have a shepherd? (Children respond.) Who is your Shepherd? (Jesus.) That s right; Jesus is your Shepherd. Jesus makes sure you are safe and have everything you need. In our story today, Jesus calls the people He cares for sheep. That sounds silly, doesn t it? But, Jesus cares for us just like a shepherd cares for his sheep. Let s listen to what Jesus has to say about His sheep. Handle the Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to John 21:16a. WATCH THE WORD: JOHN 21:15-17 Read the story below or retell the passage in your own words. To illustrate the story, show a picture of the Bible story from a children s Bible, the coloring page, or other source. After Jesus rose again, He ate breakfast with His friends. Then Jesus talked to Peter. Here is what Jesus said: Peter, do you love Me? Yes, I love You, Peter said. Peter, if you love Me, Feed My lambs. Jesus said, Do you love Me? Peter said, Yes, indeed! Peter, if you love Me, Take care of My sheep! Jesus said, Do you love Me? Lord, You know all things. You know that I love You. Jesus said, Feed My sheep. What did Jesus ask Peter? (Do you love Me?) What did Jesus tell Peter to do if he loved Jesus? (Take care of His sheep.) Who are Jesus sheep? (Anyone who belongs to Jesus.) Page 6 of 11

Take care of others for Jesus THE WAY Teacher Tip: Craft and games can be presented at the same time in different areas or one at a time depending on class size and teaching style. CRAFT: TAKE CARE OF MY SHEEP Purpose: To remember to show Jesus love by caring for others. Supplies: White and red sturdy paper, cotton balls, glue, googly eyes or eye stickers, crayons or markers Prepare: From white sturdy paper, draw and cut out the outline of a hand with fingers slightly open. When turned upside down, the thumb becomes the sheep s face and the four fingers will be the sheep s legs. From red sturdy paper, draw and cut out a heart or draw it on the palm of the handprint. Inside the heart, print: Take care of My sheep. John 21:15-17 Optional: Trace each child s hand for their craft. Adaptation for Ages 2-3: Instead of using googly eyes, which can be a choking hazard, consider using eye stickers, paper eyes, or drawing the eyes on the sheep. 1. Attach two googly eyes or draw eyes on the thumb for the sheep s face. 2. Glue heart on handprint. 3. Stretch and glue two cotton balls around the heart to make the sheep fuzzy. Craft Discussion: Jesus calls anyone who belongs to Him, His sheep. What does it mean to take care of His sheep? (To care for others.) Do you love Jesus? (Yes!) When you care for those Jesus loves, it shows you love Him! How can you take care of others? (Hugs, kisses, showing kindness, being a helper, etc.) Page 7 of 11
