The John M. Young Collection Scope and Content Randall Miles 2005 The John M. Young Collection of Civil War s consists of forty-one letters written on forty-four sheets of paper, along with fourteen envelopes, and three other documents. One of the letters takes up three sheets of paper, and one takes up two sheets. The majority, thirty-six, of the letters were written by John Young to his wife, Rosetta. One was written by John Young to his brother-in-law, Wyatt Terwilliger. Two of the letters were written by Rosetta Young, one to John and one to the Express Agent. One letter was written by Charles Terwilliger to John Young, and one letter was written by Wyatt Terwilliger to his brother. John Young was a member of Companies C and F of the 14 th Infantry Regiment, United States Army. Charles Terwilliger was in Company B, 107 th New York Volunteer Infantry. He died of typhoid at Harper s Ferry, VA, on October 15, 1862, less than three weeks after his letter in the collection was written. Wyatt Terwilliger was in Company C, 161 st New York Volunteer Infantry. He died of paralysis in Baton Rouge, LA, on May 12, 1863. The letters range in date from May 01, 1862 to July 28, 1863. 1 The letters are arranged chronologically, with the unassociated envelopes and miscellaneous documents at the end of the collection. Each letter was unfolded and placed in a mylar sleeve, such that all pages may be read without removing the letter from the sleeve. Each letter, in its mylar sleeve, was then placed in an acid-free folder. The envelopes have also been placed in mylar sleeves. Where a letter and an envelope were matched the mylar sleeves containing the items are both in the same acid-free folder. The letters are followed in the collection by one acidfree folder containing the unassociated envelopes and miscellaneous documents, each in a separate mylar sleeve.
