An open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ October 1, 2017 10:00am World Communion Sunday

Welcome to our worship service. Please join us for refreshments and time for fellowship immediately following the service. PRELUDE WELCOME SONG Selected Verses (see insert) WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Interlude Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901) All Are Welcome Rev. Jim and Rev. Heike CONGREGATIONAL GREETING CALL TO WORSHIP A Litany for the World written by John Bell, Iona Community, Scotland Where ignorance, self-love and insensitivity have fractured life in community, give your light, O God of love. Where injustice and oppression have broken the spirit of peoples, give your light, O God who frees. Where hunger and poverty, illness and death have made life an unbearable burden, give your light, O God of grace. Where suspicion and hatred, conflict and fear have challenged your goodness, give your light, O God of peace. Eternal God, open the eyes of the nations and peoples so that they may walk in the light of love: remove the ignorance and stubbornness of nations and peoples so that they may drink from the fountains of your goodness. Amen. OPENING HYMN #314 (Black, New Century) Community of Christ PRAYER POEM And the table will be wide. And the welcome will be wide. And the arms will open wide to gather us in. And our hearts will open wide to receive. And the Table Will Be Wide A Blessing for World Communion Sunday by Jan Richardson And we will come as children who trust there is enough. And we will come unhindered and free. And our aching will be met with bread. And our sorrow will be met with wine.

And we will open our hands to the feast without shame. And we will turn toward each other without fear. And we will give up our appetite for despair. And we will taste and know of delight. And we will become bread for a hungering world. And we will become drink for those who thirst. And the blessed will become the blessing. And everywhere will be the feast. Amen. ANTHEM Psalm 150 Louis Lewandowski (1821-1894) SELECTION OF READINGS Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Life Together; the Classic Exploration of Christian Community What determines our brotherhood is what that man is by reason of Christ. Our community with one another consists solely in what Christ has done to both of us. This is true not merely at the beginning, as though in the course of time something else were to be added to our community; it remains so for all the future and to all eternity. I have community with others and I shall continue to have it only through Jesus Christ. The more genuine and the deeper our community becomes, the more will everything else between us recede, the more clearly and purely will Jesus Christ and his work become the one and only thing that is vital between us. We have one another only through Christ, but through Christ we do have one another, wholly, for eternity. Philippians 2: 1-13 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Calling all Bakers! As part of our Membership care efforts, the desire has been expressed to improve upon our coffee hour offerings. And what better way than to offer home-made baked and nut free goodies, including also gluten free items. Rev. Heike invites anyone to a monthly afternoon of baking at the church. The dates are October 18, November 15, and December 20, 2017 in the 1154 GPA kitchen. We can bake a lot in one afternoon and then freeze the goods for Sunday s coffee hour. If you wish to contribute to coffee hour but cannot help us bake, we gratefully accept donations. Please contact Rev. Heike if you want to help or donate. Bible Study Please join us in the reception room from 11:30-12:30 for Bible Study. We gather to read and discuss a few chapters of the Bible each week. This fall we will be reading Revelations. No advance reading required, so please drop by if you would like to try us out! For questions, contact Sunu Yeh at dormouse99@gmail.com. What are you doing next Sunday? Rehearsals have begun, and we welcome any--men, women, young adults, youth--who wants to join in music making. We are looking for regular chimers and subs (who cannot make a regular commitment). Our leader Crosby Goshgarian makes chiming a lot of fun, and everyone is so patient and encouraging. A team of Deacons and Board Members has initiated a review of our Church s bylaws to identify areas where updates would be helpful. The intent is to have any proposed changes ready for Congregational review in the late fall and for a vote at next January s Annual Meeting.

The team is not contemplating changing the Church s governing structure. We are considering clarifying responsibilities of Church Committees (including the Board and Deacons), as well as clarifying which Board actions require approval of the Congregation at an Annual or Special Meeting. We are also Plan to make the Parish and Pastoral Relations Committee (PPRC) a permanent Committee of the Church. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for the team, feel free to contact any one of its members: Susan Lively, Mike Normile, Sharmon Priaulx, Howie Sesso, and Scott Stewart. You can find a copy of the current Bylaws on the church web site. Click here. Or, from the Church home page (needhamucc.org) mouse over Come in the upper left.
