January 7, 2018 Bible Story Focus: Jesus can do things we can t. Catching Fish Luke 5:1-7 Memory Verse: With God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26, NIV Key Question: Who can do anything? Bottom Line: Jesus can do anything. Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Activities that encourage preschoolers to enter the classroom and begin engaging with peers and Small Group Leaders by providing age appropriate and hands on fun while introducing new concepts they will hear in the day s Bible story. 1. Coloring Sheet-introduces the Bible story/concept 2. I-Spy Made to Imagine: An activity that introduces this month s theme Watch This! through imaginative play and story books. What You Need: Miracles of Jesus story books, sunglasses, magnifying glasses and play mirrors During the Activity: Encourage the children to put on the sunglasses, use the magnifying glasses and mirrors. I-spy books and books on the miracles of Jesus are provided to read and look through. During the Activity: Look at the sunglasses and spy glasses (pick up the magnifying glasses) we have on the table! We have some pretty awesome books! Let s put on the sunglasses or look through a spy glass and see what is in these books! And, we also have cool mirrors you can look at to see what you see about you! After the Activity: You spied some really cool stuff today! Today we are going to hear about a really cool Bible story today all about how amazing Jesus is! I can t wait for you to hear about it! 3. Outside Play Weather permitting you may take your children to the playground. See Playground Safety Guidelines in your binder. Gather children for a Large Group time that includes interactive worship and the Bible story. Some kids (especially the younger ones) may wander. That s OK. They re still listening and learning! Worship: Inviting People to Respond to God Engage kids hearts through dynamic and interactive worship. What You Need: CD player and this month s worship song, Amazing Things, which is included in your monthly files. The dance moves video of this song is available on the Everybody Sing! Dance Moves DVD. LEADER: Good morning, friends! It s a band new year. It s January. Did you have an awesome December celebrating that God gave us Jesus? (Pause.) I did too. And this month we re going to learn about all the amazing things Jesus did when He grew up. He did some REALLY AMAZING things. All month long, when I ask you, Who can do anything? I want you to say, [Bottom Line] Jesus can do anything. Yes, He can! I can t wait to learn all about it with you. But first, let s learn our new song together. (Lead children in singing Amazing Things. ) You all did a fabulous job with our new song. I love it! Now tell me: Who can do anything? [Bottom Line] Jesus can do anything. Story: Communicating God s Truth in Engaging Ways Engage kids hearts through a dynamic and interactive Bible story and prayer experience. What You Need: A Bible, Fish Activity Page, colorful cardstock, scissors, a small fishing net, and an inflatable boat or cardboard box that can be used as a boat. (Note: The boat will be used again next week.) (Option: You can also use painter s tape to make the outline of a boat on the floor.) (Before Large Group, print several copies of the Fish Activity Page onto a variety of colored cardstock and cut out the fish. You will need enough fish to fill your net.) LEADER: Hello, (name each child if you can)! Come sit with me. I have a Bible story to tell you. This is the Bible. (Hold up Bible.) It has God s true stories in it. God gave us the Bible because He loves us. We love the Bible. (Give Bible a hug and lay it open in front of you.) Today s Bible story is about Jesus. Jesus is special because Jesus is God s Son. story today. But first, I need you to get come get in this boat with me. Follow me to our boat! (Lead the children to get in the boat with you. Carry your Bible, net, and fish.) Is everyone in the boat? (Pause.) All right! We re ready! One day, Jesus was in a boat with a fisherman named Peter. Jesus told Peter he should put his fishing net in the water and catch some fish. (Hold up the empty fishing net.) Peter had already been fishing with his friends and didn t catch any fish not even one. But, because Jesus told him to do it, Peter threw his nets into the water. That s when Jesus did something Peter couldn t do. Jesus made Peter s net so full of fish, Peter needed help pulling the net into the boat. (Give the children lots of paper fish to put in your net.) Here, help me put all of these fish into our net. More fish! And more fish! And more fish! Peter was amazed at all of the fish. He knew that Jesus was very special and could do things we can t. True story! Now, whenever I ask you, Who can do anything? I want you to say, [Bottom Line] Jesus can do anything. Let s practice. Who can do anything? CHILDREN and LEADER: [Bottom Line] Jesus can do anything. LEADER: Great job! Again! Who can do anything? CHILDREN and LEADER: [Bottom Line] Jesus can do anything. LEADER: Yes, He can! Yay, Jesus! (Clap for Jesus.) Now let s close our eyes and put our hands in our laps so we can talk to God. Prayer LEADER: Dear God, thank You for the Bible and all of the true stories in it. Thank You for giving us Jesus to be our friend forever. Help us remember that Jesus can do anything! We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen. Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 10 minutes) Create a safe place to connect through activities that are written to reach every learning style while reinforcing the Bottom Line that was introduced during the Bible Story and applying it to real life experiences. In addition, these activities provide preschoolers with an opportunity to build relationships with their Small Group Leader. At this age not all children will participate, but most will want to be part of the fun. 1. Memory Verse with Motions Hear from God Memory Verse Review Made to Move: An activity that uses a preschooler s natural desire to move to help them learn What You Need: No supplies needed Before the Activity: Say the memory verse and do the following motions in front of the children: With God (point both hands up) all things (spread your arms out in a moving circle in front of your body) are possible. (two thumbs up) Matthew 19:26 (Open your hands like a book.) During the Activity: Say the verse again with the motions and invite the children to do it with you. Repeat several times. Before the Activity: I am going to say our new memory verse today. Everyone watch me. With God (point both hands up) all things (spread your arms out in a moving circle in front of your body) are possible (two thumbs up), Matthew 19:26. (Open your hands like a book.) During the Activity: Now let's do it all together. Are you ready? (Pause.) Fish Craft Live for God Application Activity Made to Create: An activity that allows preschoolers to review the Bible story, Bottom Line, or memory verse by creating a craft What You Need: Fish Craft Activity Page, white cardstock, and fish stickers Before the Activity: Copy the Activity Page onto the cardstock. During the Activity: Give each child an Activity Page and the fish stickers. Encourage the children to stamp the fish onto the net on the Activity Page. After the Activity: Reinforce the Bottom Line. Before the Activity: We are going to make a craft of our Bible story today. During the Activity: This is a picture of Jesus next to a net. (Point.) Oh, no! The net is empty. There are no fish. We need to add fish to the net! (Do activity.) After the Activity: Your pictures look just like our Bible story today. Jesus filled the fishermen s nets with fish. WOW! [Bottom Line] Jesus can do anything. Who can do anything? [Bottom Line] Jesus can do anything! 3. Wonder DVD If you have time you may show the Wonder! Look at God s Story DVD to reinforce the lesson.
