foreword Hebrews 4:12 (ESV) For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. GET SHARP 2 devotional journal for 2018 The Bible is powerfully relevant to our lives. It is a supernatural discerning agent that sorts out and exposes the mixed motivations of our hearts. When we seek to enjoy communion with the Lord and not be led astray by the ambiguities of religious experience we read the Bible. From the Bible s beginning to end, God s words and God s deeds reveal God himself for our knowledge and enjoyment. Of course, it is possible to read the Bible without enjoying communion with God. We must seek to understand Bible s meaning, we must truly hear and contemplate what we understand, and we must feel and express the appropriate response of the heart. If he convicts us, we must respond to him with sorrow and repentance. If he commends us, we respond with humble gratitude and joy. If he commands us, we resolve to obey and seek his strength to do so. If he warns us, we heed his caution and depend on his watchful protection. If he reveals something about himself, his Son or his Holy Spirit, we respond with awe and thrill at his greatness and beauty. So, set aside a regular time each day to meet God in is word. Define your challenges and questions for the day and ask God to answer them from his word. Use this GET SHARP journal to record what you hear. Make time for God s word, and God will change your life. Seeking God with you, Pastor Ken Ediger

a personal note In November of 2014, Emily and I were invited to a prayer training conference in Fresno, California. Little did we know how it would change our lives and inspire us for ministry. One tool we were introduced to was a prayer journal that we used for a couple of years put together by Fred & Esther Leonard. Through this, the Lord has laid on our hearts the importance of helping others hear from God, and to this end, we have put together our own devotional journal. The purpose of Get SHARP is to help you encounter Jesus in a life-changing way through the power of the Holy Spirit. All proceeds from the sale of this book go to further the ministry of our home church: North Oak Community Church. We encourage you to commit to using this GET SHARP journal during your personal devotional time. You will get the most out of it when you use it consistently. Ideally, once a week you will carve out time to meet with one or two other people and do the GET SHARP Journal together for that day. This is a great tool for making disciples the very mission on which Jesus has sent each of us. We invite you to commit to this with us. Share it with one or two friends. Watch as fire descends to ignite your faith. Believing God for great things, Dave & Emily Buller If you miss a day, don t be discouraged, just begin again the following day with the new readings. You don t have to make up missed readings. God has something to say to you. what you need to know You hold in your hands a tool that is designed to deepen your relationship with God. Believers all over the world and throughout time have used the methods we adapted (Discovery Bible Study) that you will find in this journal to grow spiritually. They continue to be a powerful teaching tool as people desire to understand God s Word and to be led into all truth by the Holy Spirit. Before I introduce GET SHARP, notice what Jesus said about the Holy Spirit: If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for He lives in you and will be in you. (John 14:15-17) The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:27) When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify about me. (John 15:26) But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. (John 16:7) I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. (John 16:12-15)

what you need to know (continued) The Holy Spirit of God is the most powerful teaching tool as we study the Bible, because He Himself is the teacher! He will guide you into all truth. He will reveal to you what is from Jesus and make it known to you. This is a powerful fact of the Christian life. Armed with the Holy Spirit of God as your Counselor, Teacher, and Gift-giver, dive in! For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (Romans 15:4) For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any doubleedged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16) Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 1:20-21) what is GET SHARP? Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8 NKJV SHARP is an acronym that stands for Scripture; Hearing; Application; Requests, Praise, and Thanksgiving; and People. Scripture: GET SHARP begins with the Bible. Start each day by looking up the Scripture passages tied to today s date. You can find these Scripture passages in the calendar at the end of the GET SHARP journal. Read these passages, identifying one or more key verses that speak to you. Write these verses down in your GET SHARP journal. Since reading may be more challenging for younger kids using this journal, they could read only one of the chapters, or part of a chapter. Hear: Jesus taught us that the Holy Spirit would remind us of everything that Jesus said, that He is the Counselor, and that He will lead us into all truth. Take some time to hear from God. What does He want you to know. What do you need to hear from Him? The Bible is God s Holy Word, and based on His promises, we expect Him to speak to us. Imagine God speaking to you. What would He say? We find it helpful to complete the following statement: My child, whom I love, today I want to tell you Apply: Seek the answers to these questions: How can I apply what I just read? Is there a command to obey? Is there a sin to confess? Is there a promise to claim? Do I need to apologize to someone? Do I need to spend some time in worship or in serving others? Do I need to share my faith or give sacrificially? The purpose is to apply what you have read to your life.

what is GET SHARP? (continued) Response: Praise, Confession, Requests, and Thanksgiving: This is designed to be a prayer time. Requests: Write out a prayer to God asking Him to speak to you, and strengthen you to carry out your Apply. Present prayer requests to Him: important decisions, anxiety, needs that you have, people who don t know Jesus, for God to raise up new missionaries. Confession: Tell God what is bothering you, or any ways that you have sinned against Him. You will find healing and forgiveness in confession (1 John 1:9). Praise and Thanksgiving: Give God praise and thanks for all that He has done in your life and for the prayer requests that He has been answering in and around you. People: One key purpose for you is to be on mission with God to bless others. This happens through encouragement, serving, healing, and sharing the Good News of Jesus with others. Spend some time thinking about who the Lord is calling you to bless today. Our prayers should arise out of immersion in the Scripture. [We] speak only to the degree we are spoken to.... The wedding of the Bible and prayer anchors your life down in the real God. --Tim Keller, Prayer GET SHARP for kids GET SHARP is designed for kids too. In the back of the GET SHARP journal is a calendar Daily Bible Reading list for Kids (Notice the black banner with white text that says FOR KIDS! at the top of the page). For each day you will see readings similar to the following: FOR KIDS! Get SHARP 2 Bible Reading Program - 2018 1 Psalm 1; Psalm 1:1-2 Advanced Readers: The first passage mentioned is for Advanced Readers. In the example above, Psalm 1 is the passage that Advanced Readers will do for their journal reading. Beginning Readers: For each day in the daily reading you will find one or two verses that have been preselected from the daily readings. These verses are for beginning readers to reflect on so that they can GET SHARP too. The advantage of kids and adults covering the same devotional material is that there are connections that can be made and conversations that can happen that flow naturally out of your devotional time. Devotional time as a family: Finally, consider coming together as a family to GET SHARP. As you include more people, you may have more discussion and to allow for that, you may want to spend less time reading, such as reading only one chapter. The GET SHARP for Kids Daily Bible Readings are designed to help you decide what would be best to read. That being said, know also that you should use discernment and have total freedom in choosing what is appropriate to read to your kids.

how to use GET SHARP Throughout history, God s people prepared themselves to meet with Him. In fact, God instructed His people to consecrate themselves (Exodus 19:10). I call this intentionality. You will find that if you are intentional about making space in your life to hear from God, you are far more likely to hear His voice and to learn His ways. Here are some ways to be intentional in preparing yourself to hear from Him. Our world is hungry for genuinely changed people. Leo Tolstoy observes, Everybody thinks of changing humanity and nobody thinks of changing himself. Let us be among those who believe that the inner transformation of our lives is a goal worthy of our best effort. --Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline LOCATE Plan to GET SHARP first thing in the morning. If hearing from God is important, then it is worth getting up earlier to have time for Him. Go to bed earlier if you are too tired. Taking time to be with the Lord does not have to happen in the morning, find a time that works for you. Find a quiet place free from distractions. PREPARE Begin by asking the Holy Spirit to teach you and to reveal to you His truth for today. Jesus said that this was the task of the Holy Spirit. Look at the Bible Reading Plan (Calendar) in the back of this journal. Check the box for today s reading. SCRIPTURE Look at the Bible Reading Plan (Calendar) in the back of this journal. Check the box for today s reading. As you read through the passages for the day, highlight, underline, or mark the verses that speak to you. how to use GET SHARP (continued) Write down the verse(s) that stood out to you. Turn to a blank journal page in your GET SHARP journal and write down what God has taught you. You might find it helpful to give a title to today s journal. HEAR Spend some time thinking about the verse(s) that you identified. What does God want you to know? What is He saying to you? How is the Lord wanting to encourage you or speak into your life? Do you need to confess a sin? You may have a word that stands out, a picture, a dream, a vision, a song, or something that happened years ago. Write down what the Lord says to you. APPLY What is God calling you to do through what you have read and what He has revealed? How do you apply what He is teaching you? RESPONSE Take some time to write out a prayer of response. This might involve words of thanks and praise. Write down any prayer requests or needs that you have. PEOPLE God has a mission for your life, and that mission involves other people. Again, come before the Lord and ask Him who you should bless today. Someone who needs encouragement? Is there someone you need to encourage? Is there someone He wants you to pray for? Share the Gospel with? Give time or money to? Missionaries to reach out to? An unreached people group (a group of people who do not know Jesus) to learn about, pray for, or even find a way to minister to?

daily pages sample entry GET SHARP! Scripture Hear Apply Response People Daily Bible Reading: Isaiah 18, Proverbs 22, Matthew 14 S(cripture): A prudent man see danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it. Proverbs 22:3 H(ear): The Lord is laying it on my heart that I am keeping too busy of a schedule and that if I try to keep it up, my work and my family will suffer. Jesus is telling me to take refuge in Him and find rest there, and to establish healthy boundaries that involve sacrifice so that I can be involved with His mission for my life. A(pply): One step that I will take beginning today is to stop watching TV all evening, because I am giving my time to this instead of engaging my family and I end up going to bed late and being tired the next day. R(esponse): Father in Heaven, I confess that I have not honored you with my time. Holy Spirit, thank you for revealing to me today the steps I need to take to have healthier family relationships and better performance at work. I can see your love for me and how you want the best for my life. I praise you today for being my Savior. P(eople): The Lord is laying on my heart two people in particular: my wife and my co-worker, Joe. I need to be present to my wife and show more an interest in her work and the victory that she is experiencing there. I also need to reach out to Joe today because of the difficulty he is having at work. Father, give me boldness as I listen and then speak into their lives. some final thoughts Be intentional. Give the best of your life and your time to Jesus. Don t worry if you have missed a day, a week, or months. Begin again. Our God is a God of second chances. The point of this journal is not to condemn you or to be a harsh rule. Instead, the GET SHARP journal is designed to help you connect with your loving Heavenly Father and to help you hear His voice. Generally, there may be a best time for you in a given day to do the GET SHARP journal. For some, this will be early morning. For others, it might be late at night. You will find it helpful to intentionally schedule a time to do it. If you vary on when you do it, you will find it falling off the plate. People are often very disciplined to turn on the television when their favorite team is playing or their favorite show is on. What about God? NIV Psalm 5:3 In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly. So give intention to this. Give the best of your life and your time to Jesus. Make Him first. You may find it helpful to carry the journal with you throughout the day and to return to it as you face temptation, or you become aware of a new prayer request. Write it down. Seek the Lord. He hears your prayers. Finally, share the journal with someone else. Last year we distributed over 200 Get SHARP Journals, including dozens that were used at Ellsworth Correctional Facility. It might be the tool that the Lord Jesus uses to speak to someone in your family, a close friend, or even someone you come across today. God is on the move! This is year 2 of this Read-Through-the-Bible plan. If you completed the readings in year one of the Get SHARP Journal, then this year you will finish the Old Testament books not covered last year. Also, the readings this year cover all the New Testament and Psalms and Proverbs each get covered twice.
