Raymond C. Huxel November 16, 1937 August 25, 2014 Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. Isaiah 43:1 PRELUDE Funeral Service Friday, August 29, 2014 11:00 AM EBENEZER LUTHERAN CHURCH The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY - Port Hudson Leslie, Missouri 63056 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Laura Nichols, Organist RINGING OF THE BELL OPENING HYMN Beautiful Savior Tune: "Schoenster Herr Jesu" (Public Domain) Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man! Truly I d love thee, Truly I d serve thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown. Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands,

Robed in flowers of blooming spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, He makes our sorrowing spirit sing. Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight, Bright the sparkling stars on high; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer Than all the angels in the sky. Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration Now and forevermore be thine! In the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen O Lord, open Thou my lips. And My mouth shall show forth Thy Praise. We brought nothing into this world and it s certain that we shall carry nothing out. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away: Blessed be the name of the Lord. O death, where is thy sting! O grave, where is thy victory. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever and ever. Amen. 2

Ray was baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Our gracious Father adopted him as His own child, washed his sins away, put His name on Ray, and gave him the new birth of water and of the Spirit as the words and promises of God declare. Amen! Thanks be to God! In Holy Baptism, Ray was clothed with the robe of Christ's perfect righteousness that covered over all sin. St. Paul says: "Do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection." Romans 6:3-5 In Holy Baptism we are forgiven our sins and granted a new life in Christ, our Lord. We solemnly renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways; we confess the gift of faith in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. PSALM 23 & Psalm 46 COLLECT The Lord be with you. And with your Spirit. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, the Giver 3

of life, we thank You for all the mercies You granted Ray during his earthly life, especially for calling him to faith through Baptism into Jesus Christ. We draw comfort in the hope of the glorious resurrection and a happy reunion in heaven. Calm our troubled hearts, we pray. Remove our doubts and our fears and renew in us the joy of salvation that You won for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. HYMN What a Friend We Have in Jesus Tune: Converse (Public Domain) What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit; Oh, what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer! Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble any where? We should never be discouraged Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge 4

Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer. In his arms he ll take and shield you; You will find a solace there. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 25:6-9 (The Lord God will swallow up death foever) (After the reading) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GRADUAL (Psalm 121) I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. 5

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE I Corinthians 15:51-57 (Death is swallowed up in victory) (after the reading) P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Alleluia Verse (Sung by All) Hyfrydol (Public Domain) Alleluia! sing to Jesus! His the scepter, His the throne. Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood. Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by His blood. Alleluia! not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us, faith believes, nor questions how; Though the cloud from sight received Him when the forty days were o er Shall our hearts forget His promise, "I am with you evermore"? HOLY GOSPEL John 14:1-6 (I Am the way, truth and the life) (after the reading) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. SERMON HYMN Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound Tune: New Britain (Public Domain) Amazing grace! How sweet the sound 6

That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, Was blind but now I see! The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures. Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; His grace has brought me safe so far, His grace will see me home. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail And mortal life shall cease, Amazing grace shall then prevail In heaven s joy and peace. SERMON I Have Called You by Name, You are Mine Isaiah 43:1 God has made us his people through our Baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith with all the saints. I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father 7

Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, The Holy Christian Church, The Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYER Dear Jesus, You also wept in the presence of death. We pray for the family of Ray. Surround Ray s family, especially Keith, Steve and Annette, Lanna, Anissa, and Levi with Your compassionate love and comfort. Give them a deep peace and quiet joy that rest on the sure and certain promise of resurrection and reunion. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. We give thanks, dear Father for Ray and for all You have given us through him. Bless all his friends and family here present with saving faith. Keep them safe, we pray, from all harm and danger, from sin and every evil. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. O God the Holy Spirit, show us the mountain of hope---the mountain of the cross of Christ. Strengthen our faith with Your Word and Sacraments that we may join those who have overcome all tribulations and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Keep us faithful as we await the heavenly reunion with Jesus Christ and this loved one. Lord, in Your mercy, 8

hear our prayer. Amen. Lord, remember us in Your kingdom, and teach us to pray: LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. HYMN How Great Thou Art Tune: O Store Gud O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder, Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Refrain: Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art! 9

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander, And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze. Refrain And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing; Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in; That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin. Refrain When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow, in humble adoration, And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!" Refrain THE BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his countenance on you and give you peace. C: Amen. The Huxel family would like to invite relatives and dear friends for fellowship and dinner immediately after the service. 10

Raymond C. Huxel Let us remember with thanksgiving what God has done through His servant, Ray. Raymond C. Huxel,76, of Washington, passed away on August 25, 2014 in Creve Coeur. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Leona Huxel; brother, David Huxel and brother-in-law, Motts Buhr. Among his survivors are 2 sons, Steven and wife Annette Huxel of Union and Keith Huxel of New Haven; 3 brothers, Emil Huxel Jr. and wife Ruthie of Union, Robert Huxel and wife Mary Jane of Washington, and Mike Konys and wife Darlene of Washington; 2 sisters, Doris Buhr of Washington and Mary Hellmann and husband James of Villa Ridge; 3 grandchildren, Lanna, Anissa, and Levi Huxel; brother and sisters-inlaw, Wilbert Baumann of New Haven and Marcella Huxel of Hermann; other relatives and many friends.
