Gawthrop POSTLUDE Gaudeamus Sidney S. Campbell We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by Caryl Price, mezzo-soprano; the Chancel Choir; and our guest musicians: Cristin Grossi, soprano; Cathy Tymann, alto; Rick Elliott, tenor, and Michael Heath, baritone. Today s preludes are based on two Pentecost hymns, Komm, heilger Geist, mit deiner Genad ( Come, Holy Ghost, with Thy Grace ), and Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott ( Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord ). The first piece is written in the form of a Ricecar (or Ricercare), an early type of fugue dating to late Renaissance. Ricecar, meaning search out, often serves as a way of searching out the mode or key of a following piece. It is likely that this ricecar would have served as an introduction to the hymn. The anonymous melody appears around 1650, and is most closely associated with the Christmas Carol O little One Sweet, O little One mild. In the second piece, the cantus firmus (hymn tune) is in the soprano and is accompanied by counterpoint in the lower two voices. It is interesting to note that Telemann also wrote a Missa Brevis on the chorale for Pentecost. Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott is a Lutheran hymn for Pentecost, with words written by Martin Luther based on the Latin hymn, Veni Sancte Spiritus. The anonymous melody is similar to the tune of the hymn Adesto, sancte spiritus by Marchetto di Padua (c. 1270). Visitors, welcome! Please fill out a visitor card and place it in the offering plate if this is your first time worshipping with us at Binkley. The arrangement on the communion table is given by Sue Wallace in memory of Wesley and Carolyn Wallace. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before service begins. Thank you for serving in the Nursery.
