Faith s Midlife Crisis Overcoming Weak Faith Randy Broberg

Young Expectations

Holy Ambition

Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God. William Carey

A Child s Great Expectations Dear God, I hope our dog will get his eyes better so he can see again and not be so blind. Dear God, I hope Grandpa s Polio leg will get better and be normal again. Dear God, I hope Daddy s left ear will work again and he won t be deaf in it anymore.

His God Could Do anything

My God was too Small

A Midlife Crisis of Faith Have you stopped desiring to do great things for God? Have you stopped expecting great things from God?

Why and How Does This Happen? You ve been praying for the salvation of a loved one, and even after years the person still rejects Christ. Your career stalled and your 401k tanked. Your dream home was short sold or foreclosed. You felt called to pastor but never got a pastor position. You lost your job, and it s now been a long time with no prospects. You were diagnosed with something long term, incurable or fatal.

Faith s Midlife Crisis Bible Examples

Abraham s Faith MidLife Crisis Genesis 17:15-18 And God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her.." Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, "Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child? And Abraham said to God, "Oh that Ishmael might live before you!"

Sarah s Faith MidLife Crisis Genesis 18:10-15 The LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.. So Sarah laughed to herself, The LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD? But Sarah denied it, saying, "I did not laugh," for she was afraid. He said, "No, but you did laugh."

Moses Faith MidLife Crisis Exodus 4:1,10, 13-14 [speaking to God in the burning bush] Then Moses answered, "But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, 'The LORD did not appear to you.'" But Moses said to the LORD, "Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue. But he said, "Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.

David s Faith Midlife Crisis 1 Samuel 27:1 [after having Saul at his mercy TWICE!] 1 Then David said in his heart, "Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. "

Elijah s Faith Midlife Crisis 1 Kings 19:1-3, 9-10 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow." Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" He said, the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away

Jonah s Faith Midlife Crisis Jonah 1-3 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah. saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me." But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish away from the presence of the LORD.

Faith s Midlife Crisis The Symptoms

Symptom 1: Your past limits your view of the future You no longer expect your impact for the Kingdom will be any more than it already has been. You tell yourself, I just need to accept that this is who I am and all I m going to be.

Symptom 2: Accepting the Lost as being Lost You cease praying for the salvation of loved ones who after many years have never received true saving faith. You tell yourself, he s heard the gospel over and over again for 20 years now, so if he hasn t believed by now he never will.

Symptom 3: Accepting Weakness and Failure You accept an illness, weakness or failure as inevitable. You tell yourself, This is my cross. I better accept it.

Symptom 4: Accepting Sin in Yourself You resign yourself to the presence of sin in your daily life. You tell yourself It s wrong, but I m just going to be defeated fighting it, so why bother?

Symptom 5 Prayer without Expectation You offer up your friend for prayer, or ask for an illness to be cured or for a sin or habit to be shaken off, yet without any expectation that it will happen. You tell yourself I guess it s worth a shot. Can t hurt.

Faith s Midlife Crisis The Cure

The Problem: We Become Know-it-alls We think we know all God is doing. We think we understand how God works. We think God is limited by the things that limit us. We think our requests limit his answers. We measure God by our experience, rather than by his Word. Because we are unable, we assume God is unable. We think we know ourselves better than God knows us

WHAT YOU KNOW GOD IS DOING DOES NOT LIMIT WHAT GOD ACTUALLY DOES The Answers

Ephesians 3:19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Our God is greater, our God is stronger God You are higher than any other

WHAT YOU UNDERSTAND DOES NOT LIMIT WHAT GOD CAN DO The Answers

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus There's no one like You None like You

YOUR REQUESTS DO NOT LIMIT GOD S ANSWERS The Answers

Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,

Romans 8:31-32 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us? And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?

YOUR UNWORTHINESS DOES NOT LIMIT GOD S GRACE The Answers

2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work

YOUR WEAKNESSES ONLY REVEAL GOD S STRENGTHS The Answers

2 Corinthians 12:8 "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

GOD S PLAN FOR YOU IS PERFECT! The Answers

2 Corinthians 4:17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, Nothing compares to the promise I have in you

1 Corinthians 2:9 But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him" The future is as bright as the promises of God. William Carey

Hebrews 2:8b Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. Is anything too difficult for God?

God s Plan for You Will Succeed!! Jude 1:24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures.

Don t Give Up. Look Unto Jesus Hebrews 12:1-2 let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,.

BELIEVE! BELIEVE God can accomplish anything. BELIEVE God can save our loved ones. BELIEVE God can restore our children. BELIEVE God can rescue us from sinful habits. BELIEVE God can heal us from our illnesses. BELIEVE God can use us in ever greater ways.
