Guy November 5th hi Match story bon gy terror Warm-up effi govern dis news fount Remember, Remember the Fifth of November Background Through hory there are always people who are not satisfied with their leaders, and it seems there is always a group of people who are trying to change the govern, sometimes peacefully and sometimes with violence. This was certly the case in the UK in the early 1600s. The King and govern were so unpopular with many Catholics that some of them planned the 'Gunpowder Plot'. On November 5th 1605, when King James was with the govern in the Parlia building, a group of 13 Catholics led by Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes placed a huge gunpowder bomb in a cellar room directly below. But someone told the govern about the plot and, before the bomb exploded, the police found Guy Fawkes with the gunpowder and some matches. Every member of the group was executed and, in order that no-one forgets the failure of the Gunpowder Plot, it was decided that November 5th would be a day of and bons. This celebration still continues in the UK and the evening of November 5th is now known as Guy Fawkes Night, Bon Night or simply Fire Night.

Step 1 Read the text A Fire Fire are beautiful, and are dangerous. In the UK are strictly controlled. Only adults (over the age of 18) can buy them, and almost all are sold just before Guy Fawkes Night. Some people have small parties in their back garden ( are not allowed in streets). Popular home are a 'sparkler', which is a work on a stick held in the hand that can be used for drawing simple shapes or letters in the air; and a 'roman candle', which is a candle-shaped work that makes a sparkling fount of changing colours. These are quite fun but not so spectacular, so most people go to a public dis in a park or an open space, which is much more exciting, and the sky is filled with loud bangs and bright flower-shaped of all colours. Even more than 400 years after the terrible event, people still remember the 5th of November, and the infamous name of Guy Fawkes. Step 2 With B decide if the following states are true T or false F a) Many children collect money for their guy. } b) A sparkler flies into the sky. } c) Everybody hates Guy Fawkes. } d) In the UK an 18 year old can buy. } e) A guy is burnt with. } f) People can with in their garden. } g) Guy Fawkes is well-known in the UK. }

Step 1 Read the text B Bon & Guy Along with a dis it is the custom to build a large on Guy Fawkes Night, sometimes as high as 3 or 4 metres. At the top of this bon is an effigy of Guy Fawkes (known simply as a 'guy') made of straw and news, and often clothed in an old jacket, pants, and a big black hat. The guy is violently burnt in the, but for a few days before November 5th children used to sit in the street with their guy. Penny for the guy, they shouted, hoping to collect a little pocket-money. Now this is rare. It makes the children look like beggars, and one penny is not a lot of money (50 years ago one penny could buy a box of 50 matches, but now it is just enough for only one match); today's children want more than this. In the UK Guy Fawkes is now seen as more of a cult-hero than a horic terror, and Fire Night has become a time of fun and laughter. Even more than 400 years after the terrible event, people still remember the 5th of November, and the infamous name of Guy Fawkes. Step 2 With A decide if the following states are true T or false F a) Many children collect money for their guy. } b) A sparkler flies into the sky. } c) Everybody hates Guy Fawkes. } d) In the UK an 18 year old can buy. } e) A guy is burnt with. } f) People can with in their garden. } g) Guy Fawkes is well-known in the UK. }
