A Day of Rest Going to Mass is important for everyone in the family. Sometimes it can be difficult, especially with young children who have not mastered the art of sitting still or paying attention. However, even these routine struggles build on the relationship of love. In some ways the most loving aspect of a parent-child relationship is discipline. Being firm and establishing rules is a proven way to demonstrate love. It means you care enough to want the child to acquire discipline for his or her own sake. In a world that offers many evil choices, helping to build self discipline is a wonderful gift. Going to Mass every week is not only in keeping with God s commandments but can also teach a child that he or she must keep Mom and Dad s rules too. As time goes on and they learn more about Christ s church they will hopefully continue in faith by their own choice. At the very least, they will understand that their parents followed God, giving them an example to fall back on if they drift away from Christ. The Lord s Day can be a great family day in many other ways too. In our fast paced modern world, family traditions are too easily lost. Sunday is a great day to get a hectic life back in order. The joyful ways that families find to make the most of a Sunday are endless. From doing nothing but lounging around, to physical activities that everyone enjoys. My children will remember a great family tradition that continues to bring joy into our family life as we remember the fun. Their mother got the idea to make every Sunday Gourmet Sunday. The idea was that each member of the family was assigned a particular Sunday. They could choose the recipe for dinner and desert. My wife would then shop for the ingredients and the child who chose the recipes was the head chef (within reason.) To add to the fun, she got a spiral notebook and pasted or wrote each recipe onto a page. After the meal, each family member wrote comments about the meal. Often the comments were very funny. In the handwriting of my oldest daughter, the introduction on the first page of the Gourmet Sunday recipe book reads: In October of 1996 Mommy suggested that the family begin Gourmet Sunday. She said this as Daddy was creating a delicious smelling and what we hoped would be a delicious tasting roasted pepper soup. The idea for Gourmet Sunday was very good. The roasted pepper soup was not. And so, a family tradition began. To this day, when all the children are visiting, one of us inevitably pulls out the old Gourmet Sunday cookbook and starts reading the comments to the joy and laughter of all. EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Enjoy God s day of rest with fun family traditions. Article written by Keith Thompson. Some of our patrons are homeless and often times the meal they get is their only meal of the day. The soup kitchen was in need of some equipment because the equipment we have is old and not working properly. We needed a meat slicer (commercial size), a food processor and an immersion blender.
