PLEASE contact: the St. Bernard Parish Office at 468-4811 or e-mail Tina at: tina@stbernardcong.org. Thank you for your patience as we adjust to announcements before Mass each week. I will be making a number of appeals this weekend. One will be for more ushers at all the Masses. We did an initial appeal last weekend at the 630 pm Sunday and had a pretty good response from some great souls. Thank you! Joe Le Beau, music director, will be available after all the Masses this weekend to at least take names and answer any questions you might initially have about commitments, scheduling, etc. The role of an usher is a sacrifice. It enables the rest of us to pray. However, having the burden fall to the same individuals week after week, month after month, year after year well we could probably do better in this realm of charity. A large pool of persons trained would be best. The usher facilitates taking up the weekly collection at Mass which is needed to help the work of the Church. The usher is also the eyes of the community while everyone else is praying. They handle health, security and any other imaginable need or emergency. They are really important. They are also by default a greeter but this is not their key role. Many parishes have other persons for this roll. The greeter element largely includes smiling and passing song sheets to persons as they enter. This is not necessarily what ushers need to do. Would you consider helping as an usher? If you are not able, could you encourage someone else? There really is no age requirement, though toddlers might be a bit too small. Families could even serve in this role. We already have some great families that commit in in this way. Please consider it. We are also looking for a Summer Picnic Chair. The Summer event is scheduled for Sunday June 3, 2018. There are few boundaries surrounding this event as we have scaled it back over the years to provide for a Sunday gathering of parishioners. It is a modest event, but does not have to be. The last few years have been held inside. We have honored persons, teachers, Corpus Christi, our parish anniversary, etc. Each year provides the opportunity to focus on something that highlights the best of our parish or Faith. We have had good luck gathering a large committee of volunteers, just not that of a Chair. I have been the honorary Chair for the last three years and I really don t think I m the best fit. If you would like to take a crack at it and perhaps even co-chair, talk to your friends or just let me know. We would like to have a Chair in place before we make a general call for volunteers to sit on the picnic committee. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

In his presentation, Dr. Johnson will discuss how the pursuit of truth requires the rational integration of faith and science. He will open with a comparison of science and Christianity (scientific method and creed) that should convince most that there is no inherent conflict, despite the contrary arguments made by some who seek to use science to attack Christianity. WWW.STBERNARDGB.ORG PAGE 5 Parish Spotlight Cindy Bell, Trip to Rome. In June, I attended the Serra International convention in Rome. The Serrans were able to meet in the audience hall for some talks, and an audience with Pope Francis. About 2 dozen Serrans were invited to sit in the front rows, to shake hands with our Holy Father. I happened to be one of them. I felt overwhelmed with the blessing of that opportunity, especially since it was one month since my father had died. Pope Francis encouraged the Serrans to continue their mission to encourage and promote vocations to the priesthood & religious life. He also suggested we should be friends to priests, in our support of them. If you are interested in learning more about Serra, you may contact me at cbell@fredbell.com OR phone 469-9748.
