DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY and 1 st COMMUNION The after Easter has been named Divine Mercy. The devotions associated with this feast were very close to the heart of our late Holy Father, John Paul II, who believed that the celebration of Divine Mercy is one of the most pressing needs for our world today. As he wrote in his 2003 apostolic letter, The Church in Europe, Christianity s historic heartland was beset by guilt over what it had done in two world wars and the Cold War, at Auschwitz and in the Gulag, through the Ukrainian hunger famine and the communist persecution of the Church. But having abandoned the God of the Bible, it had nowhere to turn to confess this guilt, seek absolution, and find forgiveness. Jesus told Saint Faustina, to whom he made known his desire for this devotion: I desire that this image be venerated, throughout the world. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish I promise victory over (its) enemies already here on earth, and especially at the hour of death, I Myself will defend it as My own glory. The image he speaks of is the Divine Mercy image, from which he promises great graces will flow wherever it is exposed and venerated. This Image is to be a fountain of mercy that we can come to and replenish our strength and belief with the graces that flow from it. John Paul believed that the Father has now turned His face toward the world, and in response he created Divine Mercy and made the Divine Mercy chaplet known. The source of this devotion is in his homeland of Poland, but its need is throughout the world. Divine Mercy is needed in our nation today as we face new challenges that threaten religious liberty through government mandates and the threat of government sanctions. For more information on Divine Mercy and to learn how to pray the chaplet, please pick up a brochure located near one of the devotional stations. Today we also celebrate First Holy Communion for our 2 nd grade children. This is an important day in their lives, because from now on, they will have the honor of receiving Christ in the Eucharist every week; even daily if they choose. As we celebrate this event in their faith lives, it is a good time to reflect on our own First Communion; what it meant for us, and what it means for us today. We are a family; even more we are part of God s family. God is our Father, Jesus is our brother, and the Holy Spirit is the love that comes forth from the Father and through the Son into our lives. We know how important meal time is in a family; a time to catch up and grow closer. The sacrifice of the Eucharist is our meal time in God s family. We come to celebrate, we come with our sorrows; we come to talk with God, to listen to His Word, to be fed by the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Today we come to celebrate with our children as they begin a new era in their relationship with God. It is a time for renewal: if we are here every week, it is a time to deepen our relationship; if we have been away, it is an invitation to return, to discover anew the love God holds for each of His children. (continued) St. Gabriel - St. John, Prairie du Chien, WI Notes Common to all Parishes 3 (continued from previous column) Congratulations to our First Communicants. May their innocent desire to receive their Lord be an inspiration to all of us, and may our commitment to the daily practice of our faith be an example for them. May you experience God s mercy in your hearts. Fr. James PRAYER CORNER God, grant healing and peace to the sick of our communities and those who have requested our prayers.
