Genuflecting in church is second nature for Catholics, but it is a (relatively) recent gesture in the liturgy. In the Old Testament the primary religious action was standing. In the Jewish religion it was the rule to pray standing. Jesus presumes that people stand to pray when in Mark s Gospel he says: When you stand to pray (Mark 11:25). Worshippers would kneel during special solemnities, for an urgent petition, or for mercy. In the Early Church kneeling became synonymous with praying and so became the dominant posture. Specifically, the act of genuflecting originated in the 1500s and became an act of adoration and reverence to the presence of God in the tabernacle. As we know, lex orandi, lex credendi (As we worship, so we believe), and so genuflecting as an act of worship, serves as the reminder of the Real Presence. When to genuflect is analogous to proper manners when you greet a person. Etiquette suggests that you first greet the person with a handshake and then another handshake when leaving the person (or similar gesture). Likewise when you enter the church (when you get to the pew) and when you leave the church (when you exit the pew) you genuflect as a sign of respect and adoration. The other general rule is to genuflect when you pass by in front of a tabernacle; much as you would greet someone you pass in front of on the street. Thinking about genuflections in light of etiquette requirements in the presence of a person helps us reorient exactly what, or rather who, is in the tabernacle. We treat the entrance and exit of a church in the same way in which we treat greeting and bidding farewell to a person. In that way we come to both a better understanding of the presence of God and the profound truth that God is a Trinity of Persons. As one Dominican priest put it: instead of turtles all the way down it is persons. The universe exists for personal reasons; it is made by persons and for persons. Gradually as this thought permeates our understanding, genuflection becomes less a blind obedient act and instead a natural and intuitive gesture of adoration in the presence of the God who created everything.
