Moses Asaah Awinongya SVD, from East Africa, has spearheaded a drive to help refugees in Germany. Since 2015, he has arranged for one hundred refugees to be accommodated on the grounds of our main SVD Mission House and Major Seminary at Sankt Agustin city, near Bonn, Germany. The SVD offered one of their buildings to house twenty refugees and the land on which the city provided residential containers for the other eighty. The refugees are all from war zones and areas of crisis such as Syria, Macedonia, Iraq and Afghanistan. A network of local churches, Caritas International and a variety of social agencies provide food and medicine, volunteers, counselors, and legal services. Our SVD confreres are ever present offering them help when they need it and our religious Sisters cook for them. Weekly Mass Intentions Sat. Sun. Mon. Blessed Sacrament Bishop McElroy on Immigration Bishop Robert McElroy, issued a statement last week critical of a controversial executive order signed by President Trump restricting the flow of travelers and refugees into the United States, as well as creating a new religious test for entry. For the Catholic community, the Gospel mandate to welcome the stranger is a searing responsibility, not only in our personal lives, but also in guiding our efforts to create a just society in a world filled with suffering and turmoil. For this reason, the historic identity of the United States as a safe haven for refugees fleeing war and persecution is for American Catholics both a source of justifiable pride and an unswerving religious commitment, even as we recognize that at shameful moments in our national history prejudice, fear and ignorance have led our country to abandon that identity. This week is just such a shameful moment of abandonment for the United States. The executive order signed by President Trump on Friday professes to be a necessary step in securing the safety of Americans. But the design of the order--and its chaotic implementation --unmask the reality that this Presidential order arose not from a careful effort to balance the needs of security with our commitment to welcome refugees amidst the greatest refugee crisis since World War II. Rather, this executive order is the introduction into law of campaign sloganeering rooted in xenophobia and religious prejudice. Its devastating consequences are already apparent for those suffering most in our world, for our standing among nations, and for the imperative of rebuilding unity within our country rather than tearing us further apart. LIFE IN THE REIGN OF GOD In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus seems pretty rough on religious people. In the Sermon on the Mount (Chapters 5 through 7), Jesus frequently speaks to people who know the Law of Moses, and to those who hold positions of authority in the Jewish community. Jesus was shaking them up! In today's Gospel, when he interprets specific portions of the Law, he relates the Law to the deeper regions of the human heart. He challenges his listeners, and us, to see what we hide from ourselves. If we are not diligent, we can use a system of ethics or religious law to assure ourselves and others that we are morally upright. When this happens, we can think there is no need for us to reflect or to change, and we have no need for forgiveness. Jesus reminds us that we can sometimes use religion to distract us from the difficult, ongoing work of self-reflection and repentance. When Jesus challenges his listeners in today's Gospel, he does not seek to humiliate them or to trap them in guilt or shame. His challenges are part of his larger message of the graciousness of God. Jesus is describing life in the reign of God, which is at the heart of his teaching and ministry. He is describing those who flourish there: people who seek reconciliation, who honor both women and men, who speak truthfully. Jesus invites his listeners to live in the reign of God, on earth as in heaven. These are the meek, the poor, the merciful and pure-hearted, as described earlier in the Beatitudes. They are aware of their flaws, but they also know that God is with them, cherishing and guiding them. They are forgiving of others because they have been forgiven. They continually strive to listen to God in prayer. They are able to live with an open heart, and to live in trust in God. As Jesus' listeners today, we are called to live the same way.
