Diocese of Derby Full Street, Derby, DE1 3DR 01332 388650 www.derby.anglican.org/theimaginecommunity February 2017 The Imagine Community Faith in your Future Diocese of Derby s Ministry Experience Scheme

Welcome Contents Our Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme (CEMES) placements in Derby city will give you a real insight into the privileges and challenges of ministering in a city which is culturally diverse and vibrant. The parishes in which you will experience ministry are engaged in a wealth of outward facing mission initiatives, church plant from HTB -Resourcing Church and fresh expressions and pioneering ministry which you will be able to observe and participate in. In my role as Scheme Coordinator I am excited by this opportunity to invite you to consider spending a year exploring more fully what God is calling you to do to serve him in his church possibly as an ordained person. It will give you a chance to see up close what it really is like to be ordained and what parish ministry as the vicar is all about and to experience it first-hand. There will be a mixture of practical experience alongside which we will offer some theological learning and reflection to help your understanding, strengthen your faith and character and develop your leadership skills. There will be people around to support you and offer vocational conversations as you discern your call; mentors who can help you reflect on your experience and listen with you to what God is saying to you about ordination or other ministry. Derby is a forward looking diocese which has a rich and diverse context it s a great place to live, work and minister and I hope you will consider joining us in Derby for what promises to be an amazing year. About 4 Who s it for? 5 Practicalities 6 Who will I work with? 8 How to apply 11 Revd Sam Treadwell Scheme Coordinator

About A Ministry Experience year provides a time to: Explore it is not a job on the cheap, or a stepping-stone apprenticeship, but a chance to explore a sense of purpose and direction. Learn about oneself & other people, to think about faith & ministry at a deeper level, develop new skills and experiences, observe others in action Try to have a go, step outside the comfort zone, develop in leadership A chance for young people to explore ministry through practical experience at the heart of the Diocese Belong to be part of a group of others on a similar journey of exploration, supported by the Church locally, regionally and nationally Reflect to find encouragement, challenge and growth through the active supervision and mentoring of ministers who are committed to developing ministry in others. Success is seeing many participants wanting to offer for ordained and other ministries in the Church, and all participants clearer about how their faith motivates their life in the world. Who s it for? If you are considering whether God is calling you to full-time church ministry either as an ordained minister or in another ministry area and want to gain experience to help you explore your future then this is for you. After School taking a gap year before university or still considering your options. After University Post-graduate and wanting to take a year out or gain more experience After work Some experience of employment but want to test out a call to a different area of ministry. Aged over 25? Please still apply - although the programme largely attracts younger adults we are open to anyone who wishes to join us. 4 5

Practicalities Where will I live? The group will live together in the Imagine Comminity House, as a community. This will include eating together, sharing chores, praying together suppported by the community chaplain. Revd Jane (BJ) Facey, Chaplain to the Community. Hello I am Revd Jane Facey, but everyone calls me BJ. I have been Vicar of St Peter s Chellaston for just over four years. Looking back I can see how God in his graciousness led me through many experiences to enable and equip me for the work I do today. I was licensed as a Reader in 2001 and began training to be a priest in 2004. Where will I work? Each intern will be allocated a placement working with a local church or group of churches alongside an experienced Vicar. We will match your skills and experience with the placement. You will normally work five days per week, have one study day per week. What about money? We will support you by: Providing accomodation and food Provide a weekly living allowence Pay for your attendance at Derby Diocese s Clergy Conference Providing training in ministry, leadership and theology There will also be extra events and training opportunities available to you. I have been privileged over many years to encourage others in their vocational journeys and I am always excited by what is discovered and the way our Almighty God transforms us into the people he wants us to be. Some have been ordained, others are Readers, some have found areas in secular employment where their particular vocation has been mightily used. No part of our life experience is ever a waste of time whatever our age or experience as Christians we are gifted by God to grow his Kingdom. All he needs from us is our obedient Yes and our willingness to have a go and learn. My philosophy of life is - age is a state of mind, we are never too old to learn, everyone has something to teach and most important of all - I am loved by God. 6 7

Who will I work with? Who will I work with? Revd Anita Matthews Rev Derek Honour (Vicar of St Barnabas Derby) I came to faith as a teenager, and had a strong sense of being called to serve God, without being sure what it might look like. When I was 21, I joined the Root Group at St. Alban s Cathedral (a year s experience for young people exploring vocation). It proved to be a life-changing experience, and led to me training for ordination to the priesthood. Not surprisingly, I am passionate about young people discovering where God is calling them in ministry! I a currently Associate Priest at St. Peter s in the City, involved in Derby City Centre Chaplaincy, and a part-time Associate Tutor at St. John s School of Mission in Nottingham. St. Peter s in the City is located in the very heart of Derby City Centre. The parish is the most deprived parish in the Diocese, and is very diverse. The major part of it contains businesses, commercial and entertainment areas, with a residential population of about 4000 residents A large shopping centre is close to the church, and we have good relations with Intu, the management company. Our location is a very strategic one for outreach to the city. During the day the area around the church is busy with shoppers, even on a Sunday, with hundreds of people passing the church each hour. In the evenings it is a young person s environment as there are many pubs and night clubs in the city. Derby City Centre Chaplaincy is based at St. Peter s, offering chaplaincy in the retail, entertainment, sport, social care, business, courts and education sectors. We are well connected with the business sector as well engaging with numerous social issues such as debt, child poverty, and homelessness. 8 St. Peter s has a mission heart, seeking to share the good news of Jesus in the city centre. Our Sunday worship is creative and contemporary, drawing on the riches of Anglican tradition and a more spontaneous. Our strapline is fullness of life and we are a seven day a week church, with a busy church centre offering conferencing facilities for local businesses and a wide range of projects including meals for the homeless, a weekly Debt Advice Jubilee Project in partnership with Derby City Mission, a weekly Refugee and Asylum Seekers Project in partnership with the British Red Cross, an annual Christmas Lunch on Jesus Project providing Christmas meals for individuals and families on low income and a Business Innovation Centre, working with start-up businesses. An emerging project is working with young people recently released from prison helping them to find employment and a new start in the community. St. Peter s is a challenging and stimulating place to explore ministry. We enjoy working together as a ministry team, we laugh a lot as well as sharing in the tough times, and we are committed to growth and transformation, beginning with ourselves. We promise you a warm welcome and lots of space to experience new things and explore your vocation! I became a Christian while at University in 1982 aged 22 through a powerful conversion experience having had no previous contact with the church. After twenty-seven years of ordained ministry I remain an evangelical charismatic by conviction. As such I continue to seek to follow the Bible s teaching in my public and private life as well as be led by the Holy Spirit. I also value greatly contemplative prayer and reflecting on scripture as way of hearing God s voice. I am particularly interested in increasing my effectiveness as a leader and in developing the ministries of others. Other interests include the environment, particularly climate change as well as issues of fair trade, justice and the challenge of living simply in a consumer culture. My heart is for those on the margins of our society and I am thrilled that the Lord is drawing to St Barnabas more and more people like this. Finally, I have been vicar of St Barnabas for the last six years and continue to see it as a joy and privilege to lead the church as well as currently be the training incumbent of two curates both of whom are also long standing members of the congregation. St Barnabas Derby We are a friendly and informal evangelical charismatic community church serving a largely white working class parish on the western edge of the city. As such we seek to discern what the Holy Spirit is saying to us recognising that St Barnabas is God s church and that we are to follow His will. In doing this we are prepared to face the cost of change and dare to take on new ways of doing things. This has led us recently to begin Messy Church, which by God s grace has resulted in many new people coming through our doors. This outward missional focus means we are deeply rooted in our local community and seek to serve our neighbours in often very practical ways. Finally, we greatly value relationships and are always seeking to encourage people to grow into greater maturity in Christ as well as identify and use the gifts the Holy Spirit has given them. God has used this emphasis we believe over the last few years to nurture new lay leaders at St Barnabas as well as see four members of the congregation accepted for ordained ministry. For a much fuller picture of St Barnabas mission and ministry please see our website www.stbd.org.uk 9
