Pastor s Pen Prayer Vigil Planned Light A Candle for Peace and Against Hatred Monday September 11 7:30 PM Heckscher Park, Prime Avenue and Route 25A, Huntington Sponsored by the Many Churches and Synagogues Of the Huntington Area USCCB President and Domestic Justice Chairman Call for Prayer and Unity in Response to Deadly Charlottesville Attack August 13, 2017 WASHINGTON Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Bishop Frank Dewane of Venice, Florida, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, are calling on all people of goodwill to join in prayer and unity in response to the violent protest and deadly attack in Charlottesville, Virginia. Full statement follows: "As we learn more about the horrible events of August 12, our prayer turns, on the Lord's Day, to the people of Charlottesville who offered a counter example to the hate marching in the streets. Let us unite ourselves in the spirit of hope offered by the clergy, people of faith, and all people of good will who peacefully defended their city and country. We stand against the evil of racism, white supremacy and neo-nazism. We stand with our sisters and brothers united in the sacrifice of Jesus, by which love's victory over every form of evil is assured. At Mass, let us offer a special prayer of gratitude for the brave souls who sought to protect us from the violent ideology displayed. Let us especially remember those who lost their lives. Let us join their witness and stand against every form of oppression." -3-

Peter had expressed horror at the prophetic words announcing that Jesus suffering and death were imminent. Peter didn t want his friend and teacher to undergo this terrible ordeal. He wanted no such thing ever to happen to his Lord. But Jesus sharply rebuked Peter s response, comparing it to that of the tempter, Satan. Just as temptation becomes an obstacle to our doing what is right, so Peter was presenting an obstacle to Christ s mission. Suffering was part of it, like it or not. To deny this difficult element of Christ s work would be to deny the bigger plan of God. And so Jesus rightly told Peter that he wasn t thinking like God thinks. Of course, since we are human, it s only natural that we should think as human beings do. We, like Peter, tend to recoil at the idea of facing unpleasant or painful circumstances. But clearly God sometimes allows such situations to take place for a greater good. Jesus understood this; even as he prophesied about his death, he also mentioned his resurrection. Today s Gospel challenges us to think as God does by holding both of these elements together. Unlike Peter who only focused on the sad part of the story, we are called to recognize the Resurrection on the other side of the cross, and to be willing to do whatever is necessary to get there. In fact, Jesus tells us later in this Gospel to take up our cross and follow Him. That is not the human way of thinking. It s the Godly way. Our natural response is to reject and scorn the trials and tribulations that we face, but Jesus wants us to embrace them patiently and come after Him on the (sometimes rough) road to eternal life. -6-

Mychal Judge 911 Walk of Remembrance On Sunday September 10 th, 2017 all are invited to attend the Fr. Mychal Judge 911 Walk of Remembrance in NYC. Held each year on the Sunday before 9/11 the walk commemorates the life of Fr. Mychal Judge and all those lost on that devastating day. Following in his footsteps as Fire Department Chaplain, the walk traces the route Fr. Mychal took on his way to minister to others in the towers before they fell. Stops will be made along the way to honor FDNY & NYPD and all victims of the day will be remembered. Fr. Mychal shared a close friendship with Detective Steven McDonald and it is Steven who founded this walk in 2002 and lead it each year since. Steven passed in January of this year with this event close to his heart. We hope to build upon what these two men have inspired and ask you to please share this information with your congregation. St. Francis of Assisi is located at 135 W. 31 Street, NYC. Mass begins at 9:30am preceded by the Rosary led by Patti Ann McDonald at 9:00am. The walk begins at 10:30am at the FDNY quarters opposite St. Francis Church Protect Your Loved Ones and the Environment Dispose of all unused prescription drugs (most especially opioids and narcotics) that are in your medicine cabinet or anywhere else in your home.
