Let s pray that 2016 will be a year that leads to more peaceful and productive times for the Untied States as well as for the World-at-Large. Our Annual Chanukah Party was over the top! Everyone that attended had a great time and enjoyed a variety of refreshments, including latkes made by Men s Club volunteers and a terrific show for the children and adults. Raffle prizes were better than ever children and parents were amazed at what was given to the winners. Steve Taub, the chair of the event, out did himself this year. A Hearty Yasher Koach goes to Steve and his hard working Committee! We hope you were there to enjoy with your family. Here is a recap of all the events during the 2014-2015 Season, courtesy of the PJC Men s Club in the. I across another skewed and hateful aspect of the boycotts targeted at Israel. Page 10 reveals another tactic used to single out Israel and prevent academic growth and exchange. The adage a mind is a terrible thing to waste comes to the forefront as I read the words of University President, Professor Rivka Carmi M.D. I am perplexed at the extreme tactics used to halt the growth within our world. I am sharing this letter, one of many targeting the State Of Israel. Whether you decide to donate is obviously up to you. I just wanted share Doctor Carmi s message to more people. I hope you enjoy reading HAKOL Please be encouraged to send me ideas or copy that you think would make Hakol even more valuable and relevant. It all begins with you! HAPPY New Year, to You & Yours! FYI Last month s Hakol included an ar cle on Jewish War Veterans. Tibor Rubin s obituary appeared in Newsday a er the mailing of the December Hakol. This man s heroic life and exemplary service should be recognized. On February 9, 2016 the PJC Men s Club will be showing a terrific movie! Free admission! Includes free popcorn, candy and soda! In 1948, a group of World War II pilots volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of Independence. As members of 'Machal' -- volunteers from abroad -- this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war, preventing the possible annihilation of Israel at the very moment of its birth; they also laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force. To solve a Su Doku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! Today s Fact Cutting Through Stone By all accounts, the First Temple was a magnificent edifice built with cedars from Lebanon and enormous quarried stones. When contemplating the manner in which the Temple was constructed, one comes across a unique conundrum. In Exodus, God clearly states: "And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you lift up your tool upon it, you have profaned it" (Exodus 20:21). This rule forbidding tools of metal applied to the building of the Temple as well. So how could one build this incredible structure out of enormous stones without metal tools? King Solomon, who built the First Temple, asked this exact question. He "said to the rabbis, 'How shall I manage [without iron tools]?' They replied: 'There is the shamir, which Moses used for the stones of the ephod (Gittin 68b). According to legend, the shamir was a tiny, worm-like creature, the size of a barley-corn, that was one of 10 things created at the very end of the sixth day of creation (Pirkei Avot 5:6). The shamir was able to cut through any hard substance (Sotah 48b). The first instance in which the shamir was put to work was to etch the names of the tribes on to the twelve gemstones of the High Priest's breastplate. After the sages told Solomon about the shamir, he went to great lengths to find it (even asking demons for help - Gittin 68a), and he had to capture it from the care of a certain hoopee bird. Thus it is recorded that the Temple "was built of stone made ready at the quarry; and there was neither hammer nor ax nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building (I Kings 6:7). Upon the completion of the building, the shamir was wrapped in wool and kept in a lead container. "When [the Second] Temple was destroyed, the shamir ceased [to exist] (Sotah 48b) Today's Tip: Great and Small Be conscientious of all forms of life.
