Jesus Christ s Mission Continues in the Church (Church History) bswartstrom@iwacademy.org Mrs. Swartstrom, Theology Lap 3: Ideal, Reality, and Bridge to Holiness Essential Questions: Isn t the Church being hypocritical in telling other people to be holy and avoid sin when many Catholics, including the clergy, are guilty of terrible wrongs? (Bishop s Framework, VI. B) Late Assignments: All assignments are due by the last of LAP 4 for partial credit. Please take note of the assignments stating No NLP available. This means that the student may not use her NLP for that assignment because it is essential for class discussion. Therefore, failure to complete the assignment on time would result in a loss of credit. See the Incarnate Word grading policy for details. Retakes/Redos: Students scoring a 64% or below must on a summative assignment must REDO the assignment. Students will have until the following Fri (from receiving the REDO grade) to complete the REDO. (Again, see the Incarnate Word grading policy for details.) Overview: In this LAP, students will learn about some key issues and events in the Church s history, primarily the Crusades, Inquisition, Avignon Papacy, Protestant Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. Students, then, will see both the damage and the renewal that occurred as a result. Students will also learn more about the hierarchy of the Church and the various vocations within it. Rationale: There are events in the Church s history that have often led people to look unfavorably towards the Church, particularly the Crusades and the Inquisition. Students, therefore, need to know the history of these events and how the Church has grown as a result. Learning Goals: By completing this LAP, students can 1. Recognize the Church s mission of evangelization, sanctification, and governance. 2. Recall major events in the Church s history and their influence on the future of the Church, including the Crusades, Inquisition, Avignon Papacy, and Protestant Reformation. 3. Discuss how the Church is holy despite events and leaders that were unholy. 4. Describe the various vocations within the structure of the Church. Summative Assessment: You may choose ONE of the following options to complete your Summative Assessment: Test, Written Report, or Oral Interview. Total Points: 60 (Note: If you have to REDO the assessment, you must choose a different option.)
Test A test may act as the summative assessment for this LAP. The test will include multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, and essay questions. However, it will not be organized by type of question. Rather, the test will be arranged by the material and learning goals. For example, there could be a section of four multiple choice, one fill in the blank, and two short answer questions all relating to Pentecost, as opposed to one section for all multiple choice questions combining a variety of information. The reasoning is that both the student and the teacher will be able to clearly see what material is understood best by the student and, perhaps, the sections that the student may need to revisit. There will be three sections on this test. Students should use the Learning Goals (above), the daily lesson goals (in the agenda below), previous quizzes, and both classwork and homework to complete a study guide and review for the test. For this summative assignment, students should write a minimum of a 4 page paper (12 point, Times New Roman font, double spaced, MLA heading and spacing, on to the 5th page) addressing the essential question: Isn t the Church being hypocritical in telling other people to be holy and avoid sin when many Catholics, including the clergy, are guilty of terrible wrongs? students will need to discuss each of the four learning goals with their additional points (see the study guide- all points should be addressed ) and how they serve as examples of either the ideal, bridge, or reality. Note that the paper should flow and focus on the thesis. Sample Outline: I. Introduce LAP and Thesis Statement addressing the essential question. II. Discuss the essential question III. What is the Church s Mission? A. Evangelization, Sanctification, Governance, inculturation B. Why is this the ideal? IV. The Reality is the ideal doesn t always take place (Discuss each event) A. Discuss roles of various vocations and how they would lead us back to the Ideal VII. In this interview, Mrs. Swartstrom will ask you three of the following six questions. You will need to discuss each question with at least 3 pieces of supporting evidence. Each answer needs to directly answer the question and be thorough in your understanding. Anchors: Fri, Enrichment (Optional): Vocations In this LAP, we have been talking about various religious vocations and the structure of the Church. Make an appointment with a religious brother, sister, or a priest to learn more about their particular experience in religious life. Questions may include, but are not limited to, the following questions: 1. Why did you become a priest, sister, or brother? 2. When and how did you receive your call to become a priest, sister, or brother? 3. What attracted you to your order? 4. What do you like about this lifestyle? 5. What advice would you give to a young person who is considering religious life? 6. What is a typical like for you? 7. What role do you play in your community? 8. What are your hobbies and interests? 9. Do you ever get lonely? Do you wish you could be married and have children? 10. What is one thing you dream of doing some? 11. What is something that you wish other people knew about your life? After the interview, compile your notes into a reflection paper discussing your experience with the person and what you learned. Write about things that stood out to you about your conversation, what you
found interesting, and even what you admire about this person. Be sure to include the selfie with them. Papers should be 2 full pages (on to the third page), 12 point, Times New Roman font, and double spaced with a formal MLA heading. OR Facebook As Christians, we believe that in every moment of sorrow and despair, God is with us. In this LAP, students have seen many instances of sadness within the Church s history, however, in those times there were also wonderful saints that shared the love of God with their communities. 1. At least 2 posts should talk about the situation of the world and/or the Church during his/her lifetime AND how the saint did or would have responded to it iii. Comments should reflect how people responded to the saint during his/her time AND how the saint impacted the people in his/her time Facebook pages should be professional and colorful reflecting a depth of research and understanding about the saint and his/her time period. How this is created is open to student creativity. It can be on posterboard, multiple sheets of paper, or video. No keynotes or powerpoint slides.
