Anita and Michael Dohn, Missionaries in Health Ministries December 2010 Mission Email [No.77] Website: http://dohnfamily.org Email: DohnFamily@sams-usa.org Anita and Michael Dohn are physicians serving as South American Missionary Society missionaries with La Iglesia Episcopal Dominicana at the diocesan Clinica Esperanza y Caridad. They live along the southern coast in San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic. Limits and Limitations There are always limits. As the attending physicians in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University Hospital years ago, there sometimes came the point where we said that everything that could be done had been done for the patient. We had reached a limit beyond which there were no further options. This often happened after days (or weeks) of sophisticated medical care. We face limitations here as well-though generally much sooner than we did in Cincinnati. Often the limitations come before the end of the outpatient consultation when the patient says, I can t afford a blood test or I can t buy that antibiotic. It is frustrating. Paradoxically, it is also one of the blessing of our work here. We are nearly always working along the edge-trying to figure out how to get food for the hungry, how to heal the sick, how to clothe the naked. In Cincinnati, when I reached a limit in the ICU, it was probably a true limit-we had exhausted all possibilities. Here, there are limitations, but often they are not true limits-there are further possibilities, but they are out of reach for some reason (often related to economic reasons and the limits of poverty). Working along the edge of limitations is not a bad place to work. True, it can be exasperating, heart-breaking, wearisome, and infuriating at times. However, at other times, by the grace of God, we can move beyond that limitation and overcome the problem. It has been said that the more we know and the more we can bring under our own control, the less we feel the need to depend on God. Here we are constantly aware of human need-perhaps the Lord uses that to keep us more in touch with Him. Robert Browning wrote, Ah, but a man s reach should exceed his grasp, or what s a heaven for?
