For 7 May 2017 APOCALYPSE SOON The New Heaven & the New Earth Part 2 (Revelation 21:9-27) The Apostle John just witnessed one of the greatest sights that a man can see of the New Jerusalem, And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (v2) This must have been an amazing experience for this man languishing in exile in hard labour on the Isle of Patmos. His lonely spirits must have been lifted at this glorious prospect. Now he would be further encouraged as the detail of the New Jerusalem is unveiled. Cities are often centres of concentrated evil. The first murderer built the first city. But the final city to be built on this earth will be the very opposite. The New Jerusalem will be a centre of concentrated worship and joy. The Holy City will be truly holy! And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. (v9) One of the angels then spoke to John. This angel was involved in a previous vision in the context of the final Tribulation judgment. But now the angel has a different message, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. The city is described as the bride, the Lamb's wife because its identity is not tied up in bricks and mortar but the eternal dwelling place of God s people in all ages. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; (v10-11) John is now brought on a personal guided tour or the New Jerusalem. This city is not one that is a creation of man but God s sovereign creation, descending out of heaven from God. This is the www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 1

place that Christ has promised to prepare for His people, I go to prepare a place for you. (John 14:2b) It is the great city, whose builder and maker is God. (Heb. 11:10) The realization of this promise will then be fulfilled. At the heart of this New Jerusalem is because God s glory is manifested there, Having the glory of God. God s glory reflects his essential nature. The glory of the Lord is everything that makes God, God. John MacArthur observed, The most distinguishing characteristic of the capital city of eternity is that it is the throne of the eternal, almighty One, and therefore had the glory of God in it...the glory of God is the sum total of His attributes (cf. Ex. 33:18-19) and is manifested as blazing light (Ex. 13:21; 19:18; 24:17; 34:29-30, 35; 40:34; 1 Kings 8:10-11; Ps. 104:2; Isa. 4:5; Ezek. 10:4; Hab. 3:3-4; Luke 2:9) and in His Son (Matt. 17:2; 24:27, 30; 1 Tim. 6:16). Sadly, though God revealed His glory, disobedient, rebellious people rejected Him. Even the Lord Jesus Christ, the embodiment of God s glory in human form (John 1:14), was despised and forsaken of men (Isa. 53:3). Radiating from the New Jerusalem will be the brilliance of the full manifestation of God s glory. The glory of God results in a wonderful, glowing reflected light present in this city, and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. This radiant light is a kind of giant light bulb or star. It is described, like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. So it has the appearance of a huge crystal-clear jasper jewel that reveals the awesome glory of the Eternal God. The light that shines in this city shall touch the whole earth, And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. (v24) J. A. Seiss writes of this glorious light: That shining is not from any material combustion, not from any consumption of fuel that needs to be replaced as one supply burns out; for it is the uncreated light of Him who is light, dispensed by and through the Lamb as the everlasting Lamp, to the home, and hearts, and understandings of his glorified saints. When Paul and Silas lay wounded and bound in the inner dungeon of the prison of Philippi, they still had sacred light which enabled them to beguile the night-watches with happy songs. When Paul was on his way to Damascus, a light brighter than the sun at noon shone round about him, irradiating his whole being with new sights and understanding, and making his soul and body ever afterwards light in the Lord. When Moses came down from the mount of his communion with God, his face was so luminous that his brethren could not endure to look upon it. He was in such close fellowship with light that he became informed with light, and came to the camp as a very lamp of God, glowing with the glory of God. On the Mount of Transfiguration that same light streamed forth from all the body and raiment of the blessed Jesus. And with reference to the very time when this city comes into being and place, Isaiah says, the moon shall be ashamed and the sun confounded, ashamed because of the out-beaming glory which then shall appear in the new Jerusalem, leaving no more need for them to shine in it, since the glory of God lights it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. (v12-14) www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 2

The beloved Apostle then noted further detail about the city. It has notable external features. The twelve gates have the names of the 12 tribes and the foundations have the name of the 12 apostles. This surely reflects the unity of the Bride of Christ in the Old Testament and New Testament, as the 12 tribes and 12 apostles are representatives that symbolize all of God s people in each age. This New Jerusalem is the eternal home for all believers. We are One in Christ. However, the fact that this distinction is still preserved is a clear indication that the NT Church does not replace Israel. Each entity has its own distinct role in God s redemptive plan and those distinctions are still honoured and delineated in eternity. And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. (v15-17) John was then shown the dimensions of this amazing city. When it is measured we are told that its length is twelve thousand furlongs. This is approximately 1500 miles or 3, 375,000,000 cubic miles (one writer estimated that if each saint was given one quarter of a cubic mile or 36 billion cubic feet then this city would have 216,000,000,000 allotments). It is at least more than a 1,000,000 times larger in total square area than the millennial city. By contrast, the mainland of Singapore measures 31 miles from east to west and 17 miles from north to south. So this city will be at least 50 times as large as Singapore! A typical 5 Room HDB allotment is around 1,184 sq. ft. The walls of this great city are 144 cubits (12 X 12) or 216 feet. The New Jerusalem seems to be in the shape of a cube, The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. It is perfectly balanced from the God of order and perfection, For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace. (1 Cor. 14:33a) The City will be a shining testimony to the great glory of God. Henry Morris raises an interesting possibility, www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 3

It should also be remembered that the new bodies of the resurrected saints will be like those of angels, no longer limited by gravitational or electromagnetic forces as at present. Thus it will be as easy for the inhabitants to travel vertically as horizontally, in the new Jerusalem. Consequently, the streets of the city (verse 21) may well include vertical passageways as well as horizontal avenues, and the blocks could be real cubical blocks, instead of square areas between streets as in a present-day earthly city. And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. (v18-21) If the dimensions of this massive city are unprecedented, the materials are equally unique. John moves from the dimensions to take a closer look at the materials of this shining city. The city was constructed of pure gold, like unto clear glass. The streets are not just gold plated but pure gold, and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. This is not a symbolic image. It doesn t say, the street of the city was like pure gold, but in unambiguous language, THE STREET OF THE CITY WAS PURE GOLD! When gold is in its purest form it becomes transparent like glass. Thus, wherever the Lamb is in the City you will see him! Gold is the preserve of the rich and powerful today on the earth. But in the New Jerusalem it is the common inheritance of us all. One day we will all walk the streets of gold! Foundations of buildings and cities are normally hidden but these glorious foundations are revealed to demonstrate the glory and majesty of this city. The foundations of the wall are, garnished with all manner of precious stones. The God of beauty makes beautiful His city. We also learn that each of the 12 gates are constructed from one giant pearl. This is when the pearly gates will be opened to every believer. John Philips makes an insightful observation, www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 4

All other precious gems are metals or stones, but a pearl is a gem formed within the oyster the only one formed by living flesh. The humble oyster receives an irritation or a wound and around the offending article that has penetrated and hurt it, the oyster builds a pearl. The pearl, we might say, is the answer of the oyster to that which injured it..how like God it is to make the gates of the new Jerusalem of pearl. The saints as they come and go will be forever reminded, as they pass the gates of glory, that access to God s home is only because of Calvary. Think of the size of those gates! Think of the supernatural pearls from which they are made! What gigantic suffering is symbolized by those gates of pearl! Throughout the endless ages we shall be reminded by those pearly gates of the immensity of the sufferings of Christ. Those pearls, hung eternally at the access routes to glory, will remind us forever of One who hung upon a tree and whose answer to those who injured Him was to invite them to share His home. And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. (v22-24) John is then given a preview of the internal characteristics of this city. We might expect to find that there is a temple in the New Jerusalem but there isn t one, And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. All the inhabitants of this city will worship eternally in the presence of the Triune God. The symbols and types now give way to the glorious reality of perfect fellowship with our God. Light is a way of speaking about knowledge and in heaven we will truly understand more of Him, For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (1 Cor. 13:12) A theologian described heaven as, an unknown region with a well-known inhabitant. Our lives will be eternal, united worship. It will be face to face with the Lord, As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness. (Psa. 17:15; cf. Job 19:25-27) Face to face I shall behold Him, Far beyond the starry sky; Face to face in all His glory, I shall see Him by and by! And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. (v25-27) In the ancient world the gates were closed at night to prevent enemies attacking those inside under the cover or darkness. But the New Jerusalem will exist in a world where sinful men have been eternally driven out. Nothing that can disturb or defile that city can ever enter. Heaven is wonderful by not just for all that is there, but also for what isn t! All God s people will enter this city at any moment without fear or hindrance. A double negative ou me is used in the original Greek here (to translate the expression shall not ) to emphatically declare that there is not even a remote possibility that these gates will ever have to be shut. www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 5

The light of God s glory illuminates this city eternally and there is consequently no darkness or night there. In our present earth the sun and moon cause the cyclical day and night periods but their absence means that there is no night darkness in the eternal golden age. In this magnificent light all the nations of the world will walk in God s glory because, God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5) The eternal city will never sleep! Walls are used not only to protect but also to prevent onlookers observing our actions behind the walls. Swindoll notes, In our present fallen world, people build walls to maintain privacy and security. These can be physical barriers to keep curious onlookers from watching our every move, but they can also be mental, emotional, or spiritual walls that protect us from harm, hide our shame, or keep people at a distance from us relationally. This kind of secrecy and security will be unnecessary in the Celestial City. To a certain degree, Christians today can reflect the grace and glory of God, not by hiding in the inner sanctuary of private life but by being transparent with others. This means keeping the inside as pure as the outside, then letting people see the glory of God shine through us. We are reminded once again that not every son of Adam or daughter of Eve will be present in the New Jerusalem, And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. Those who wish to abide in the New Jerusalem must repent of their sins on earth. John is attempting to describe the indescribable in words. But in his limited abilities he describes heaven as a place of unprecedented safety, beauty, holiness, majesty, and perfection. It is no surprise that a city whose builder and maker is God has such unending, staggering beauty. The glory of God will radiate and be reflected from every surface. It is like a shining diamond fifteen hundred miles square! John saw a vision of it in the Spirit but we shall live in it eternally. It is truly a perfect place for a perfected people. The best is yet to come. www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 6
