Week of August 4, 2013 Lessons for the Leader Reflect on all the places you go each week: work, stores, restaurants, banks, gas stations, friends' homes, church, and so forth. Now think about all the people you interact with at those places. How often do you tell people about Jesus when you're out and about? The journeys of Paul and Barnabas as described in Acts 13 14 serve as one reminder that we are to tell people about Jesus wherever we go. Read Acts 13:1-3. The Holy Spirit instructed the prophets and teachers at the church in Antioch to set apart Barnabas and Saul (also called Paul) to tell people about Jesus. What did the prophets and teachers do before they sent the men on their assignment? Read Acts 13:4-5,13-16,32-33,42-51; 14:1-3,6-7. Paul and Barnabas proclaimed God's message wherever they went. Sometimes the message was well-received and other times it was not. Imagine how Paul and Barnabas must have felt when people rejected the message and persecuted them. How do you explain the continued boldness of Paul and Barnabas despite the challenges? Would you continue to tell about Jesus if you were rejected and persecuted? Read Acts 14:21-28. Paul and Barnabas chose to continue spreading the good news. In fact, in addition to visiting new towns, they revisited some of the places where they had been persecuted! Everywhere they went, they showed love for others by telling them about Jesus. How often do you show that same type of love? Read 2 Timothy 2:2. This verse instructs us to teach people about Jesus. You have the privilege of teaching preschoolers about Him. Will you also be an example for the preschoolers by telling people about Jesus wherever you go? What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. Teacher Tip Include whole body actions (climbing through boxes) and hands only activities (crumpling paper, writing). Say: "Let's take turns running through an obstacle course." Enlist adults to help kids complete activities. Allow kids to complete course with partners, backward, or to rearrange the course. Say: "Obstacle courses are fun. Some parts are easy and some parts are hard. In our Bible story, Paul and Barnabas (BAHR nuh buhs) went on a journey. Parts of their journey were easy and parts were hard." Worship 3aWelcome Children and Pray (2 minutes) Say: "Welcome! I am so glad you are here. We'll have fun singing, playing, and learning to tell people about Jesus." Pray. 4 Sing "There's No One Exactly Like Me" (DVD, 2 minutes) 5aSing "Love Each Other" (DVD, 2 minutes) 6 Learn Whom to Tell About (4 minutes) Beach ball Say: "We show love when we tell people about Jesus. Let's toss the ball [display] around. When I say 'stop,' hold the ball. The person with the ball will tell us something about Jesus." Guide kids to toss, catch, and state things they know about Jesus. Continue as time permits. 7 Learn Where to Tell (5 minutes) Beach ball from step 6 Print "World Map" (CD). Teacher Tip Use an inflatable globe instead of beach ball. Say: "This is a map of our world. We live here. [Display and point on map.] The world has seven continents. Continents are large pieces of land." Point to and name each continent. Say: "The Bible says we are to tell people about Jesus. God wants people to go to every continent to tell about Jesus. Let's pretend to be the continents. We'll toss the ball to each continent group." Form seven groups, assigning each group a continent name. Lead kids to say as the ball is tossed to each group: "We can tell people about Jesus in [name continent]." Collect the ball. Conclude: "We learned we are to tell about Jesus. Let's learn about two of the first men who traveled to places to tell about Jesus." 8 Find It (2 minutes) Print "Acts" (CD). Display and read aloud the title. Say: "Acts tells how the church started, about journeys, healing, shipwrecks, and more. Is Acts in the Old or New Testament? (New) Open your Bibles to the Book of Acts." Encourage adults to help as needed. 9aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Scissors, tape Print "First Journey" (CD). Tape the papers around the room in order. Display the map (p. 1). Explain: "Two men traveled to different places to tell people about Jesus. The names of those places are displayed around the room. We'll travel to each place as I tell the story." Gather kids at the Antioch (1) sign. Open your Bible to Acts and tell the story. Page 2 of 27

Paul and Barnabas Told About Jesus Based on Acts 13:1-5,13-16,32-33,42-51; 14:1-3,6-7,21-28 God chose Paul and Barnabas to travel and tell people about Jesus. The men left Antioch (1, AN tih ahk) and walked to Seleucia (2, sih LYOO shih uh). [Walk] From Seleucia, Paul and Barnabas sailed to the town of Salamis (3, SAL uh miss) on the island of Cyprus. [Direct kids to stand close together. Guide the children on the outside perimeters to pretend to paddle while the whole group sails (slowly walks) to Cyprus.] Paul and Barnabas went to the synagogue (church) and told the people of Salamis about Jesus. The men then walked across the island telling everyone about Jesus' love. [Walk] Once they reached Paphos (4, PAY fahs), a town on the other side of the island, Paul and Barnabas set sail for the town of Perga (5, PUHR guh). [Sail again, allowing different kids to row this time.] [Walk] The men walked from Perga to another town named Antioch (6). Paul and Barnabas went to the synagogue and preached. The town was happy to hear about Jesus. The people asked Paul and Barnabas to stay and preach the next week. Almost the whole town came to hear the men preach. The men told the people the good news of Jesus is for all people. Some of the people did not like hearing this and caused trouble for Paul and Barnabas. Paul and Barnabas left Antioch and walked to Iconium (7, igh KOH nih uhm). [Walk kids to Iconium.] The same thing happened in Iconium. Many people believed the good news about Jesus, but some people caused problems. When Paul and Barnabas learned of a plan to stone (throw rocks at) them, they traveled to Lystra (8, LISS truh) and Derbe (9, DUHR bih) telling people about Jesus. [Walk to both cities.] After many people in Derbe believed, Paul and Barnabas headed back to where they began. [Walk kids back through towns 8, 7, 6, and 5.] The men encouraged people who believed in Jesus. From Perga, Paul and Barnabas walked to Attalia (10, at uh LIGH uh). [Walk] From Attalia, they sailed back to Seleucia (2) [Sail]. Then they walked to Antioch (1). [Walk] Paul and Barnabas gathered the church people together and told what God did. 10aReview the Bible Story (4 minutes) Print "Teaching Picture 10 Paul and Barnabas" (CD). Display the teaching picture. Read aloud the review questions (see Review Questions under Wrap-Up). 11aLearn the Bible Verse (5 minutes) Paper, marker Print 2 Timothy 2:2 from your preferred translation. Teacher Tip Print "2 Timothy 2:2 Paraphrase" (CD). Display and read aloud verse. Say: "This verse helps us know we should teach others about Jesus." Invite children to say the verse with you twice. Form two groups. Instruct one group to make a megaphone with their hands and say the Bible verse. Instruct the other group to cup their ears with their hands and listen to the verse. Switch roles and repeat several times. 12aUse Worship Guides (7 minutes) Worship Guides, markers Distribute Worship Guides and markers. Help kids complete Worship Guide activities. 13 Make Application (2 minutes) Say: "God wants everyone to know about Jesus. Who can tell about Jesus? (everyone) Tell three people 'Jesus loves you.' " Encourage kids to say the words to others. 14 Sing "I Worship You, O Lord" (DVD, 2 minutes) 15aPresent Offering and Pray (2 minutes) 16aGo to Application Activities or Wrap-Up Week of August 4, 2013 Page 3 of 27

Ask: "Who can tell about this picture?" Invite a few kids to tell about the Bible story. Say: "Paul and Barnabas went to many places to tell people about Jesus. Sometimes God asks people to move away from their homes and go places to tell people about Jesus. What do we call people who leave and go tell about Jesus? (missionaries) Paul and Barnabas were some of the first missionaries to go tell people who were not Jews about Jesus." Lead kids to say the Bible verse. 19 Apply (4 minutes) Empty tin cans, string, nail, hammer, masking tape, scissors Print "Tin Can Phone" (CD) and prepare. Teacher Tips Create more phones for a large group. Form 2 lines for each phone you make, and pull the lines apart so the strings are taut. Make phones from plastic cups if cans are not available. (Cans work best.) Pull string tight for best reception. Say: "Let's practice telling people about Jesus." Display the can phone and explain how it works. Invite two children to use the phones. Say: "Take turns saying 'Jesus loves you' into the can." Assist kids with pulling string taut and talking into the cans. Repeat until each child gets a turn. Application Activities Select from the following choices. Each choice is designed for 20 minutes of small group time. Scissors, stickers, crayons or markers, hole punches, yarn, chenille stems, beads Print "Jesus Facts" (CD). Print 1 copy per child. Worship Through Arts and Crafts Make Jesus Tags State: "A missionary is 'someone who goes places to tell people about Jesus.' Paul and Barnabas were some of the first missionaries. We can tell people about Jesus, too. What can we tell people about Jesus?" Encourage responses. Instruct: "Let's make Jesus tags. Cut apart these tags [display]. Punch holes where the black dots are. Decorate the tags. We'll string yarn through the holes and add beads. We can give people the tags as ways to tell about Jesus." Distribute supplies. Assist with cutting and tying. Talk about the Bible story. Say: "We can tell people about Jesus and invite them to our church when we give them our Jesus tags." Say the Bible verse (2 Timothy 2:2). Suggest: "Push a chenille stem through the strings of your tags. Twist the ends of the stem closed. You can untwist the stem to remove a tag to give to someone. We show love by telling people about Jesus." Pray. Large boxes (canned goods, moving), chairs, box cutter or utility knife (adult use), scissors, construction paper, cardboard circles or paper plates (1 set per box), crayons, markers, tape or glue sticks, brads or chenille stems Print "Taxicab Directions" (CD). Follow instructions to cut flaps off box(es). Print "Play Money" (CD). Print several copies and cut out. Teacher Tip Make the taxi(s) before the session. Invite kids to decorate them during activity to give more emphasis on kids' telling. Worship Through Dramatic Play Make and Drive Taxicabs Say: "Many people travel to tell people about Jesus. People might travel to other parts of a country, to a country faraway, or across town. Some people ride in taxicabs to go tell about Jesus. Taxicabs are cars in which people pay the drivers to take them places. Let's make taxicabs out of these boxes. We can take turns driving and riding in the taxis to go places to tell about Jesus." Assist kids with decorating taxis. Distribute play money. Suggest: "Let's take turns being drivers, people riding in the taxicabs, and people being visited. Taxicab drivers will collect money from the riders. We can pretend our taxicabs are in different towns or countries." Help kids choose roles to play and allow time for playing. Ask: "What can we take with us when we tell someone about Jesus?" Encourage responses (Bible, candy for the kids, information about a church, etc.). State: "We had fun playing in the taxicabs. We pretended to go to places to tell people about Jesus. Many people from churches and missionaries go to tell people about Jesus. I'm glad we can tell people about Jesus." Pray. Week of August 4, 2013 Page 5 of 27

Beach ball, painters tape, scissors Print "People and Places" (CD), cut apart, and tape the pictures (pp. 1-2) on the ball. Use painters tape to make boundaries. Tape a line dividing the playing area into 2 playing fields. Place signs (p. 3) by teams. Teacher Tips Set up and use badminton net. Tie rope between 2 chairs placed facing each other at centerline. Drape sheet over rope. Provide a globe to locate different places pictured. Use an inflatable globe as a volleyball. Scissors, 2 hula hoops or painters tape, Bible times pictures (dictionaries, outdated teaching pictures, etc.) Print "Bible Times or Today" (CD) and cut apart all pieces. Place pictures beside the hoops. Overlap 2 hula hoops or tape 2 overlapping circles on the floor (Venn diagram): Place each title (p. 2) at the top of a circle. Worship Through Games Play Volleyball Place kids into two teams. Label teams "People" and "Places." Direct the teams to sit on their assigned sides of the playing area. Say: "A missionary is 'someone who goes to places and tells people about Jesus.' Who were the missionaries in our story today? (Paul and Barnabas) Missionaries do all kinds of jobs. Some missionaries work at resorts or hotels on the beach and tell people about Jesus. The missionaries plan activities and hold worship services on the beach. Let's play volleyball and learn more about the different places missionaries serve and the types of jobs they do." Guide kids to stand in rows on their sides of the playing area. Explain: "The ball will start on one side. The team is to keep the ball in the air without letting it touch the ground. The first person will hit the ball into the air. Another person will hit it again. A third person will gently hit the ball to the other team. If the ball touches the ground, the person closest to the ball will pick it up and choose a picture on the ball. If you are on the people team, find a picture of a person and guess what kind of job he does as a missionary. If you are on the places team, find a place picture and name the place the missionary serves. The adults will help read the words." Play volleyball, alternating teams starting each play. Collect the ball. State: "God calls people to go different places and do different jobs to tell about Jesus. We can tell people about Jesus wherever we are." Pray. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Explore Bible Times and Present Day State: "Paul and Barnabas went to many cities to tell people about Jesus. Bible times cities were different from our cities today. Let's look at some pictures and decide if they would belong in Bible times [point to circle area], today [point to circle area], or could be both [point to overlapping circle area]. I'll invite you one at a time to pick a card and choose which circle to place the picture." Assist kids with placing pictures. Talk about the pictures and the differences between time periods. Point to and talk about Bible times pictures. Ask: "What do you wish we had today that was in Bible times? [Point to the Bible Times circle and allow kids to respond.] What do we have today that you are glad we have?" [Point to the Today circle and allow kids to respond.] Separate the hoops and pictures a few feet apart. Place pictures from overlapping area inside either circle. If using taped circles, move pictures to the outer circles and do not use overlapping area. Instruct: "Everyone walk around the room without stepping inside the hula hoops. When I say 'choose,' everyone stand inside one of the hoops. I'll invite someone from each hula hoop to name a person from Bible times or a person they know today." Play as time permits. Pray.
