Unit 6 The Life of Jesus The Life of Jesus Introduction The Bible is a history of God s redemptive plan. God s redemptive plan includes not only your salvation by faith in Jesus Christ but also a plan for your life. In the first five LIFEPACs of this course, you have studied from the Old Testament how man became a sinner and was separated from God. God s first promise of a redeemer was given in Genesis 3:15. That promise was given again to Abraham that through his seed (descendants) would come a blessing to the world then to Isaac, to Jacob, and to the descendants of Jacob, the nation Israel. Among the sons of Jacob, the line of the Redeemer (the Messiah) was narrowed to Judah (Genesis 49:10). In the line of Judah was King David and the Redeemer Himself, Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul wrote (Galatians 4:4), But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman... As God had promised, He sent His Son into the world. He was called Jesus (Matthew 1:21), and He became the Savior of all who believe on Him (Acts 16:31). In this LIFEPAC you will study The Life of Jesus. In Bible LIFEPAC 607 you will study The Followers of Jesus ; in 608, The Life of Paul ; and in 609, The General Epistles and Revelation. LIFEPAC 610 will be a course review. The apostle John told us in John 20:30 31, why the Gospel according to John was written: And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. Jesus said (John 10:10),... I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Keep these two thoughts in mind as you study this LIFEPAC and The Life of Jesus : (1) The words and works of Jesus were written that you might believe on Him and that through believing on Him you would have eternal life. (2) Jesus came into the world not only to save you but also to give you the best life possible: abundant full and overflowing life. Objectives Read these objectives. The objectives tell you what you will be able to do when you have successfully completed this LIFEPAC. When you have finished this LIFEPAC, you should be able to: 1. List the major events in the life of Jesus Christ. 2. Name the four books of the New Testament that give the story of Christ s life. 3. Describe the eternal Christ. 4. Tell about the virgin birth of Jesus. 5. Interpret and apply some teachings of Jesus. 6. Show that Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. 7. Explain the purpose of Jesus death. Section 1 3

Unit 6 The Life of Jesus 1. BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD All of the Old Testament pointed to a wonderful event. Jesus was coming! The prophets gave many detailed accounts of events in the life of Jesus. Now the New Testament records these wonderful events. In the Gospels we can read about Jesus background, family, and events around His birth and early childhood. The books in the Bible that tell us about these wonderful events are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Section Objectives Review these objectives. When you have completed this section, you should be able to: 1. List the major events in the life of Jesus Christ. 2. Name the four books in the New Testament that give the story of Christ s life. 3. Describe the eternal Christ. 4. Tell about the virgin birth of Jesus. 6. Show that Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. The Life of Jesus Unit 6 BACKGROUND OF JESUS Does the life of Jesus begin with His birth in Bethlehem? Yes, His earthly life began there, but no, the life of Jesus did not begin there. Jesus has always existed as God s Son. In Hebrews 13:8, the Bible says, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever. In John 1:1 we find these words: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In John 1:14 this teaching is made clearer: And the Word was made flesh [Jesus], and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. One of the prayers of Jesus tells that He has always existed with God. Jesus prayed, as recorded in John 17:5, And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was (italics added). Another time Jesus mentioned Abraham and proved that He (Jesus) was eternal (John 8:56 58): [Jesus said] Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him [Jesus], Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Jesus is eternal. He is without beginning or end. He is the Son of God. He is God. He came into the world to save sinners. Complete the following activities by writing the correct answer on each line. 1.1_ The earthly life of Jesus began with His birth in. a. Jerusalem b. Bethlehem c. Jericho 1.2_ 1.3_ Jesus has always existed as God s Son. (True or False?) To whom does this verse refer? 1.6_ Did a prayer of Jesus reveal that He was eternal? (Yes or No?) 1.7_ Jesus told the Jews: Before Abraham a., I b.. 1.8_ Eternal means a., without b. or c.. 6 Section 1

Unit 6 The Life of Jesus BOOKS ABOUT JESUS The New Testament contains twenty-seven books. The first four books of the New Testament are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These four books are called the Gospels because they contain the life and teachings of Jesus. They contain good news about Jesus. Matthew was a publican. As a publican he collected Roman taxes, which was an unpopular job. Matthew became a believer in Jesus and traveled with Him during most of His public ministry. Matthew wrote the first book of the New Testament. Mark wrote the second Gospel. He was a friend of Peter. Peter also wrote books of the New Testament. Mark was also a friend of Paul. Paul was a great preacher in that time. Mark s Gospel is the shortest book of the four Gospels. Luke wrote the third Gospel. Luke was a physician, or a doctor. The special emphasis of his book was that Jesus was completely human as well as completely divine. John wrote the fourth book of the New Testament. He was Jesus closest friend on earth. John emphasized the fact that Jesus was the Son of God. All four Gospels record facts about Jesus but not the same facts. Only Matthew and Luke tell of the birth and childhood of Jesus. One-third of the book of Matthew is about the last week of Jesus life. One-half of the book of John is about the last week of Jesus life. Thus, all of the books are about Jesus; yet, each has a different emphasis. Complete the following activities. 1.9 Name the four Gospels in the order they appear in the New Testament. a. b. c. d. 1.10_ The closest friend of Jesus emphasized that He was the of God. 1.11_ To find out about the birth and childhood of Jesus, read the books of a. and b.. Answer true or false. 1.22 All four Gospels record the same facts about Jesus. 1.23 All of the Gospels are about Jesus, yet each has a different emphasis. 8 Section 1

Unit 6 The Life of Jesus FAMILY OF JESUS The Bible tells us in Luke 1:5 80 about four people in Jesus family: Mary, the mother of Jesus; Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus; Elisabeth, the cousin of Mary; and Zacharias, the husband of Elisabeth. Zacharias and Elisabeth. Zacharias was a priest. He and his wife Elisabeth were old people and did not have any children. Luke 1:6 describes this couple: And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. While Zacharias was in the Temple, an angel appeared to him. This angel told Zacharias not to be afraid, for they were to have a son whose name would be John. John would be filled with the Holy Spirit and would prepare the way of Jesus. Then the angel said (Luke 1:19),... I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. Because Zacharias did not believe the angel, he was told that he would not be able to speak until all of these events had happened. Joseph and Mary. Six months later, Gabriel, the angel, was sent by God to the city of Nazareth in Galilee. Gabriel appeared to the young virgin Mary, who was planning to marry Joseph. The angel s words are important and are found in Luke 1:30 33. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Read Luke 1:5 80 Mediterranean Sea Bethlehem Nazareth in Galilee Nazareth Sea of Galilee Jordan River Salt (Dead) Sea When Mary questioned the angel, he said (Luke 1:37), For with God nothing shall be impossible. Then Mary replied to let it be so and the angel departed. Mary went to visit Elisabeth and Zacharias. They rejoiced together about what God had done. John was born, and his father was given back his speech. Zacharias said that John would be the one to prepare the way for Jesus. Section 1 9

Unit 6 The Life of Jesus BIRTH OF JESUS Only the book of Matthew records the visit of the angel to Joseph. When Joseph learned that Mary was expecting a child, he thought about putting her away in privacy. Then an angel appeared to Joseph saying (Matthew 1:20 and 21):... Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her (the child to be born) is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Caesar Augustus made a decree that all the world should be taxed. Everyone had to return to his city, which meant Joseph must go to Bethlehem since he was of the lineage of David. Mary went with Joseph to Bethlehem. While Joseph and Mary were there, Jesus was born in fulfillment of Micah s prophecy (Micah 5:2): But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Luke 2:7 says, And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. An angel appeared to the shepherds to tell them that Jesus had been born. Then a multitude of angels appeared saying (Luke 2:14), Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. The shepherds went to see baby Jesus. They glorified and praised God for all the things they had heard and seen. Read Luke 2:1 40 Glory to God in the highest... Only Matthew records the visit of the wise men. How old Jesus was when the wise men came is not known, but He is thought to have been between forty days and two years old. The wise men were highly educated men, probably from Babylon or near that area. They may have traveled as far as a thousand miles to see Jesus! When they arrived, they stirred the whole city. Matthew 2:1 3 states, Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. The wise men brought precious gifts to Jesus. Matthew 2:12 says, And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. Section 1 11
