October 29th: Thirtieth Sunday In Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Pictured below are, on the left, Mason and Logan Mirza, sons of John and the late Abigail Dela Cruz Mirza. On the right are other members of the Mirza / Dela Cruz Family. All recently joined in the Flushing Meadow Park Breast Cancer Walk, an initiative of the American Cancer Society ( Making Strides Against Breast Cancer ) during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The participants walked in tribute to Abigail, who died of this illness a year ago. The sentiment visible on the back of Logan s shirt reminds me of a stanza from a famous poem by Emily Dickenson: They say that time assuages {suffering}. Time never did assuage. An actual suffering strengthens, As sinews do with age. We mark the funeral of another cancer patient this weekend: 11 am usher John Weggeland, husband of Michele, a member of our English choir at that same Mass. John s optimism and faith gave him courage in his final struggle. As St. Paul said to Timothy in one of his epistles, The Lord stood by me and gave me strength. John had this right attitude to the end. All of us know persons battling this disease (it may even be you). Included below is a prayer for those challenged by this adversary. Let s keep lifting up their needs to God. Finally, the worse thing we can do is reduce these persons to a diagnosis. As one cancer patient expressed it so eloquently, I m a tough cookie. Except for the cancer, I m fine. Bless, O God, all who struggle with cancer. Empower them with hope for each and every day. Provide them with loving and tender care, laughter, and the support of love. Grant them courage when they are afraid, comfort when they are in pain, and your blessing when all else seems hopeless, that in their fight with illness they may continue to praise you and glorify your name. Amen. -Father Jerry Jecewiz PARISH STAFF/EQUIPO PARROQUIAL Rev. Jerry Jecewiz, Pastor Rev. Kuno Kim, Parochial Vicar Sister Christine Scherer, D.W., Religious Educ. The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael's parish. Children in grades 2 and above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be interested in having any high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday's a month at 7:00pm and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow. The only requirements are that you attend practice and Mass, and behave appropriately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist on the singing, who may play a musical instrument or who are willing to help with other support functions, such as transportation. If you are interested please take a form at back of the church and return it to the parish rectory, to Sister Christine at the Religious Education Program, Joe Becker or Jan Wnek after Mass.
