EVENTS IN 1727 AD 1 1727 AD REVIVAL IN HERRNHUTT: 1 ST GREAT AWAKENING It shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, says the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work therein. (Jer. 17 v 24) On 16 July 1727, Zinzendorf poured out his soul in a public prayer accompanied with a flood of tears. His prayer produced an extraordinary effect. The whole community began praying. During those days they were deeply affected by the Word of God and the power of the Blood of Christ. Their hearts were on fire with faith and love towards the Saviour and a similar love towards one another. They grew together into a holy union, by banding in small groups of two or three to exhort, reprove and pray for each other during the week. On 10th August, the minister Rothe was seized, in the midst of the assembly, with an unusual impulse. He threw himself upon his knees before God, and the whole assembly prostrated themselves under the same emotions. An uninterrupted course of singing and prayer, weeping and supplication, continued till midnight. All hearts were united in love. On 13th August, the Holy Spirit was poured out on whole assembly. During the communion service, loud weeping drowned out the singing. An anointing flowed through them with inexpressible joy and love as they shared the bread and wine, knowing they were baptised into one Spirit. The scene was so moving that the pastor could hardly tell what he saw. On 18th August, all the children at the boarding school were seized with an extraordinary impulse of the Spirit, and spent the whole night in prayer. From this time, a constant work of God was going on among the children. No words can express the powerful operation of the Holy Spirit upon these children, whose lives were so transformed. On 25th August the brethren began the ministry of 24 hour-a-day prayer which continued for over a hundred years. They considered that, as in the ancient Temple the fire on the altar never ceased to burn, so in the Church, which is now the Temple of God, the prayers of the saints ought always to ascend to the Lord. 1 http://www.revival-library.org/pensketches/revivals/1st_moravians.html

THE FIRST REVIVAL OF THE GREAT AWAKENING 2 Since the days of the primitive believers revival had not been seen a revival such as occurred in Herrhutt. This was the first in a wave of revivals of historic proportions. There have been six massive movements of the Holy Spirit since the sixteenth century Reformation which have affected the global Christian community. These are commonly called Worldwide Revivals or Great Awakenings, because of their wide effect. They all began with Christians experiencing God in a powerful way becoming passionate in their love for God and their desire to serve Him. Subsequently the revivals resulting in: masses of conversions, huge social changes, and improvements in the lives of the poor. Jonathan Edwards called them effusions of the Spirit at special seasons of mercy " THE HERRNHUT COMMUNITY 3 In 1722, Count Zinzendorf offered an asylum to a number of persecuted wanderers from Moravia and Bohemia (parts of Czech Republic today), and permitted them to build the village of Herrnhut on a corner of his estate of Berthelsdorf. As the village grew it became known as a place of religious freedom, and attracted individuals from a variety of persecuted groups. The concentration of differing beliefs in the village produced intense conflict. Personal and religious differences between the estate manager Heitz and Johann Andreas Rothe, the Lutheran pastor of Berthelsdorf, were made more tense by the apocalyptic preaching of Johann Sigismund Krüger. The village fell into disarray and severe conflict. Some, including village founder Christian David, got caught up in apocalyptic fanaticism, referring to Zinzendorf as the Beast of the Apocalypse, and Rothe as the False Prophet. Zinzendorf moved back to his estate to devote himself full-time to reconciliation of the conflict. He began to visit each home for prayer, and finally called the men of the village together for an intense study of the Scriptures. 2 http://www.revival-library.org/pensketches/revivals/1st_moravians.html 3 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/nicolaus_zinzendorf

The question they came to focus on was how the Scriptures described Christian life in community. These studies, combined with intense prayer, convinced many of the community that they were called to live together in love, and that the disunity and conflict they had experienced was contrary to the clear calling of Scripture RECONCILIATION AND BROTHERLY AGREEMENT Out of study and prayer, the community wrote down the basis of Christian community. They placed emphasis on freedom of ministry in the body of Christ balanced with admonitions aiming to sustain a peaceful community of mutual love, edification, submission, and service. On 12 May 1727, the members of the community signed the Brotherly Agreement. The covenant upheld up the core Christian doctrines of Trinity, Inspiration and Authority of the Scriptures, and Salvation through Christ. But members of the community were permitted to hold differing opinions on Bible teachings so long as it did not interfere with the witness of peace, harmony, and love in the community. SMALL GROUPS Zinzendorf organized the people on the principal of family life. However his ideas of family were not limited to a traditional nuclear family of parents and children. Indeed, his communal families, or choirs, were based on age, marital status and gender. He recognized at each stage of life, there are different spiritual needs. Married couples still lived in the normal way but for prayer and Bible study men and women were separated. ROOTS IN GERMAN PIETISM 4 The roots of Zinzendorf can be traced from the German Pietism movement which held: The earnest and thorough study of the Bible in private meetings, ecclesiolae in ecclesia ("little churches within the church"); The Christian priesthood being universal, the laity should share in the spiritual government of the Church; 4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/pietism

A knowledge of Christianity must be attended by the practice of it as its indispensable sign and supplement; Instead of merely didactic, and often bitter, attacks on the heterodox and unbelievers, a sympathetic and kindly treatment of them; A reorganization of the theological training of the universities, giving more prominence to the devotional life; A different style of preaching, namely, instead of rhetoric, implanting of Christianity in the inner or new man, the soul of which is faith, and its effects the fruits of life ZINZENDORF S BELIEFS Zinzendorf referred to a local Christian community as the "Congregation of God in the Spirit." Zinzendorf's theology was very relational and profoundly Christ-centered. Rather than focusing on doctrine or belief, it emphasized the spiritual relationship between the believer and the Savior and the believers with each other. To be witnesses in the world Christians needed to live in a faith community, or Gemeinde (congregation). The Savior has a relationship with each believer and with the Gemeinde. The Gemeinde was the Body of Jesus Christ in local expression established under the authority of the Savior. There was no loyalty to any ecclesiastical denomination or sect. The emotional life of the believer is as important as the intellectual. The cold intellectual approach of making doctrine the center of community life was condemned. A great deal of practice of faith dealt with transformation of the emotions. This was called the "religion of the heart." Constant prayer was a communal commitment. Groups called Watchers were established to pray through the twenty-four hours of the day.

PROPHECY OF JEREMIAH 17 V 24 It shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, says the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work therein. (Jeremiah 17 v 24) Laws concerning the Sabbath have a large place in the Torah. The Sabbath was a point of sharp disagreement between Jesus and the Pharisees in the New Testament. The Sabbath was the first law prescribed by Moses after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea. The Israelites complained Moses brought them into the desert to starve to death. He said I will rain bread from Heaven down on you. Each one is to gather only enough as he needs, an omer for each person in the tent. Tomorrow is a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save what is left and keep it until morning. So they saved it until morning as Moses commanded and it did not stink or get maggots in it. Eat it today Moses said because it is a Sabbath to the LORD. You will not find any of it on the ground today. Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any. So the people rested on the seventh day. The bread that rained down from Heaven was the first coming of Jesus Christ. He was gathered by the Israelites seen and tested as one would eat the mana then bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil suffered and died. But in the morning on the seventh day Christ rose from the dead it did not stink or get maggots in it. Everyone who believes in Jesus is like those who rested on the Seventh Day. They had no need to gather any more information, or test to see if Jesus was the Messiah - they could rest because they have found Jesus to be true! The resting indicates our faith in God. All the feasts of Jehovah are prophetic of future events. The Sabbath Day is prophetic of the entire Age of Grace that began at the Cross of Christ. Hebrews says Therefore since the promise of his rest still stands, let us be careful none of us falls short of it now we who have believed have entered that rest for he has spoken about the seventh day with these words And on the seventh day God rested from all his works There remains then a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. (Hebrews 4:1-13) Our paper Sabbath Day expands on this.

HERRNHUTT REVIVAL It shall come to pass The people who gathered at Herrnhutt were refugees from the awful Thirty Years War in northern Germany between Lutherans and Catholics. They were like the Israelites who fled from Pharoah. Zinzendorf allowed them to build a village at the corner of his estate. But the village turned out not to be the Promised Land. When the Israelites crossed the Red Sea the people quarrelled with Moses: the same in Herrnhutt. Some even called Zinzendorf the Antichrist : he who granted them their freedom and a refuge! if ye diligently hearken unto me, says the LORD, But Zinzendorf prayed. And the people prayed. to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day They rested from their works of quarrelling - and studied the Bible in their small groups. but hallow the Sabbath day The Holy Spirit revealed Christ. All the saints together wept because they knew it was sin which led to all this quarrelling and division of the Body of Christ. to do no work therein Revival came. But, not in outward religious works rather the inward reformation of the heart : Love for one another came. Patience with one another came. Faithfulness with one another came. Kindness with one another came. Gentleness with one another came. Joy and Peace came. The LORD Jesus Christ was glorified in the midst of his people. It was the first of the great awakenings of the 18 th and 19 th centuries.

SPIRITUAL NUMBER ANALYSIS For a mind that has wisdom please read on. See truth from another perspective. PART ONE Chapter 17 of Jeremiah is the 86 th chapter of The Prophets. The spiritual number 86 means Nations Worship God Finally, in chapter 17 of Jeremiah, the nations worship the Lord Jesus Christ as God! PART TWO Jeremiah 17 v 24 is the 19,359 th verse in the whole Bible starting at Gen 1 v 1. The number 19,382 = 22 x 881 The spiritual meaning of 22 is Spiritual Light The spiritual meaning of 881 is Land of the LORD Defiled Only when Christians see the Land of the LORD Defiled in their own heart can Spiritual Light come: sin, confession, repentance, revival. PART THREE Jeremiah 17 v 24 is the 1727 th verse of The Prophets starting at Isaiah 1 v 1. The number 1727 = 11 x 157 The spiritual meaning of 11 is Mystery The spiritual meaning of 157 is Chosen People God is one. The Father, the Son, and the Spirit agree. Although each is a person, their community is so tight it is a Unity in its operation. The Body of Christ is all the sisters and brothers on earth who have received salvation. When those sisters and brothers put down their quarrels and stand on the essential truths of Salvation and Scripture, then the Body of Christ is One and conforms to the image of Christ who is One with the Father.
