17. What are the two principle reasons for God s giving His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in my place? (3:16) 18. Does the word whoever mean anyone, or only those who are worthy? (3:16) 19. If I am to receive everlasting life, what must I do? (3:16) Believe is the key word of the Gospel of John. It is used approximately 100 times. 20. If I come to Jesus, will He cast me out? (6:37) JOHN STUDIES Bible Studies in the Gospel of John (4 lessons) Lesson #1: MAN Personal Discovery Why should you......be interested in the Word of God? If you are WORRIED, it will give you... (16:33) If you are BOUND, it will give you... (8:32) If you are DISCOURAGED, it will give you... (15:11) If you are only EXISTING, it will give you... (20:31) I trust that you have found this first study interesting and profitable. We will meet at the time and place we decided upon when I gave you this first lesson. At that time we will go over each of the questions together. If you were not sure how to answer any question, just put a question mark beside it. That s just fine. Also, if you are interested and have the time, it would be helpful and interesting to begin reading the Gospel of John right from Chapter 1. Read a little at a time, perhaps a few verses or maybe even a chapter each day. Do not get bogged down if some of it does not make sense yet. Just keep on reading. As you read and study the Scriptures, God promises that if anyone truly desires to understand the truth of His Word, He will reveal it to him. Note the promise in John 7:17. - 4 - This is the first lesson in a series of four practical, personal discovery Bible studies which are available to you. The Bible consists of 66 books, with two major parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. All of the answers to the questions in these studies will be found in the Gospel of John, the fourth book of the New Testament. The numbers at the end of each question indicate the chapter and the verse in which the answer is found. For example, (16:33) means Chapter 16, and Verse 33 in the Gospel of John. Read each question, look up the verse, and write the answer (from the verse), as clearly and briefly as possible in the space provided. We will meet soon to go over this lesson, and then move on to Lesson #2. You are welcome to use your own Bible, but I will gladly provide one for you if you do not have one. Thank you for taking the time to do these studies. I will be praying for you this week! - 1 -

Just a few thoughts as we begin: The Bible is God s Word, and has answers to real life questions. God is speaking to you when you read His Word. We will see what God says about some very important questions. My role in this is to guide you through the studies. (Acts 8) But it is God who gives you understanding of His Word. What is important is what God says...his answers to each question! Lesson #1: MAN 1. In John 8:12, what title is given to Jesus? 2. Are all men naturally willing to come to the light of Jesus Christ? (3:19-20) 3. Why are some men willing to live in darkness? (3:19-20) 4. Even though covered by darkness, are our thoughts and our acts hidden from the eyes of Jesus Christ? (2:24-25) 5. When a man sins, is he really free? (8:34) 6. As long as one is not willing to listen to God s Word, to what class of people does he belong? (8:47) 8. What is the condition of those who do not believe on God s Son? (3:36) 9. Is this condemnation effective when we die, or right now? (3:18) 10. Who is already condemned by God? (3:18) 11. What must one do in order to be lost? (3:18) 12. Did Christ come into the world to judge me? (3:17) 13. What, then, does He wish to do for me? (3:17) 14. In spite of man s sin, what was God s attitude toward him? (3:16) 15. What did God do as final proof of His love for people? (3:16) 7. The Holy Spirit convicts the world (people) of sin because... (16:7-9) 16. According to John 3:16, who took the initiative in salvation, God or man? - 2 - - 3 -

19. What is the question usually asked by those who seek to merit salvation, rather than to depend completely on the value of Christ s death? (6:28) 20. How does Jesus answer these people? (6:29) In questions 21-23 ask yourself... If I hear His Word and believe: (5:24) JOHN STUDIES Bible Studies in the Gospel of John (4 lessons) Lesson #2: THE SAVIOR Personal Discovery I am glad that you have completed the first lesson. In Lesson #1 we saw that... The Word of God brings satisfaction to the soul. Men love darkness rather than light. God judges every man because of sin. The penalty for sin is death. God sent Jesus Christ, His Son, to save us. 21. What do I now have? (5:24) 22. Will I be condemned by God to Hell? (5:24) In this lesson we will learn more about Jesus Christ, the Savior. Thank you for taking the time to do these studies. 23. Out of what condition, and into what other, have I passed? (5:24) 24. What other verb used in John 1:12 means the same thing as believe? 25. If I receive Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, will I really become a child of God? (1:12) 1. What was God s purpose in giving us the Gospel of John? (20:31) 2. In what way are the words of Jesus different from other words? (6:63) 3. If a man rejects Christ and His words now, what will those same words do in the last day? (12:48) If possible, continue your daily reading in the Gospel of John. _ - 4 - - 1 -

4. What is the penalty for the sin of unbelief? (8:24) 12. Besides His death, what else did the Scriptures predict about Jesus (20:9) 5. At the time of Jesus trial, what fault was found in Him? (19:4) 6. What sort of death did He die? (19:17-18) 13. Did His disciples expect this to happen? (20:9) 7. Could Christ have avoided this terrible death? (10:17-18) 14. What proof did the disciples have that Jesus rose from the dead? (21:14) 8. What was the motive which led Jesus to die in our place? (15:13) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) 9. According to the verse just quoted, for what kind of person did Christ die? 10. What did John the Baptist call Jesus? (1:29) In Old Testament times, a lamb without spot or blemish was killed and sacrificed as an innocent substitute making atonement for the sins of the people. This was a symbol, or picture of Jesus Christ, the true Lamb of God who was to come into the world. John the Baptist recognized Jesus as this sinless substitute who was to die for our sins. 11. By His death on the cross, what did Christ do with our sins? (1:29) who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree... For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit. (1 Peter 2:24 & 3:18) 15. How did Thomas, a particularly skeptical man, prove to himself that Jesus rose bodily from the dead? (20:27) The Gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ is: That He is the Son of God; that He... died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) 16. In describing His complete and perfect payment for all sin on the cross, what words did Christ use? (19:30) 17. However, the fact that Christ died for all DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY SAVE ANYONE. Why not? (8:24) 18. What is the one thing God asks me to do in order that I may have everlasting life? (6:47) - 2 - - 3 -

18. Did Thomas believe? (20:29) 19. Can you believe in the Lord even though you have not seen Him? (20:29) 20. Who was the first person to whom Thomas spoke when he believed? (20:28) 21. Who is the first person to whom we should speak when we believe? 22. What did Jesus ask the man whom He had healed from blindness? (9:35) 23. After Jesus had identified Himself as the Son of God, what did this man say? (9:38) 24. Who was the first person to learn that this man had believed? (9:38) 25. Suppose that you say to Christ: Lord Jesus, I believe that I am a sinner and condemned of God; and I believe that you died for all of my sins. I now receive you as my personal Savior. If you come to Him in this manner, will He save you? (6:37) OPTIONAL: Have you come to Jesus? When? Do you believe, then, that He has saved you? Note: Can you be sure that you possesses eternal life? Yes, you can, as we will see from Lesson #4, the last lesson of these Bible studies. - 4 - JOHN STUDIES Bible Studies in the Gospel of John (4 lessons) In Lesson #2 we saw that... Lesson #3: SALVATION Personal Discovery Christ died for our sins. He rose again. He has done all that is necessary for salvation. In order to receive this salvation, we must believe. 1. What great question must we all answer sooner or later? (18:38) _ 2. What did Christ say in answer to this question? (17:17) _ Jesus Himself gives us the reason for all error. He told the false religious leaders of His day:...you are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. (Matthew 22:29) 3. When I understand God s Word, what effect will it produce in my life? (8:32) _ 4. What attitude is required if we are to grasp the truth? (7:17) - 1 -

5. What can permanently satisfy the thirst of the soul? (4:14) 6. What is the only source of this water? (4:14) (a) The pleasures of this world? (c) Jesus Christ? (b) The practice of religion? (d) Riches? 7. Who is the main theme of the Scriptures? (5:39) 8. Who are those whom Jesus invites to come to Him? (7:37) 9. Is eternal life a gift, or must it be earned by good works? (10:28) 10. If we do not receive this life, what can be the only reason? (5:40) 11. What is the normal use of a door? 12. Who is the only door to Heaven? (10:9) 13. What will happen to the one who enters in by Him? (10:9) - 2-14. In John 14:6, what is the first of three titles given to Jesus? 15. Did Jesus mention any other mediator between the Father and man, except Himself? (14:6) For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus. (1 Timothy 2:5) 16. Will anyone succeed if he attempts to go to God through any other mediator? (14:6) From our studies so far we have seen that the heart of the Gospel is the good news that,...christ died for our sins.... In this single phrase we have summarized the facts God wants us to know and accept... that is, (1) that we are sinners; (2) that the penalty for sin is death; (3) and that Jesus Christ, through the shedding of His blood on the cross, paid this death penalty for us. Christ has done everything that is necessary for our salvation. It is for this reason that the one thing that God commands us to do if we are to receive His salvation is:...believe on the Lord Jesus Christ... (Acts 16:31) But some will say, I believe already. However, the word believe, as used in the Bible, does not mean simply a mental assent to certain facts or doctrines, but rather, a complete trust in a person. To believe in Jesus Christ in the Biblical sense, then, is something quite different from believing about George Washington. It is an act of the will, and not of the intellect only. You can believe that a plane exists, is real, and can fly. But you may not be willing to walk in the door and trust it to take you where it is going. In John 5:40 Jesus told certain Jews:...you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. To believe, then, means to come directly and personally to Jesus Christ for salvation. 17. After telling Thomas to put his hand in His side, what did Jesus ask him to do? (20:27) - 3 -

21. How can I show that I have a sincere love for the Lord? (14:21) 22. Having himself found Jesus, what was Andrew s new desire toward his brother? (1:41-42) JOHN STUDIES Bible Studies in the Gospel of John (4 lessons) Lesson #4: NEW LIFE IN CHRIST Personal Discovery 23. What did the lame man do immediately after Jesus had healed him? (5:15) In Lesson #3 we learned that... We can know the way of salvation. Only CHRIST can satisfy the human heart. Whoever wants to, may come to Him. To believe is to place one s entire confidence in Him for salvation. 24. After rising from the dead, what did Jesus say to His disciples about spreading this good news? (20:21) 1. After believing on Christ, must one wait to have eternal life? (5:24) 25. Why is it urgent that we tell others the gospel, the good news that Christ died for sinners? (9:4) OPTIONAL: Have you witnessed to anyone about Christ? Have you led anyone to the Savior? Do you know anyone who may be interested in these studies? Thank you for taking the time to complete these studies in the Word of God. I have enjoyed our time together. Also, here are a few suggestions for you to consider: 1) Finish reading through the Gospel of John. 2) Continue reading through the New Testament (Acts, etc.). 3) Meeting to study the Word of God after these John Studies. - 4 - Notice that the tense of the verb to have used in this verse indicates that eternal life is the present possession of the believer. Therefore, the moment that a person believes on Christ: 2. He is not......... (3:18) 3. He has........... (3:36) 4. He is passed...... (5:24) We read in the Word of God: He who has the Son has life...these things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life... (1 John 5:12-13) Note: Questions 5, 6 and 7 are based on 1 John 5:13, the verse quoted above (not the Gospel of John). 5. To whom does God address these words? - 1 -

6. What verb is used to describe the degree of assurance that a believer should have concerning his present possession of eternal life? (a) suppose? (b) hope? (c) know? After receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as one s personal Savior, to be uncertain of one s salvation is not a sign of humility; it is rather a lack of trust in God and His Word. Every true believer may confidently say with Paul:... I know whom I have believed... (2 Timothy 1:12) 7. What, then, is the basis of the believer s assurance of eternal life? (a) his feelings? (b) the promises of men? (c) the written Word of God? (d) his good works? (e) his church membership? (f) religious rituals or ceremonies? 8. Who is able to pluck out of Christ s hand those who have eternal life? (10:27-28) 9. Who joins with Christ to safeguard the believer s salvation? (10:29) 10. What verb is used to indicate the radical transition from death unto life which takes place when one believes on Christ? (5:24) 11. What is this transition from death unto life called in John 3:7? 12. Those who have received Jesus Christ are born: (a) of blood? (b) of the will of man? (c) of God? - 2 - Although we were not born again through doing good works, nevertheless, the possession of this new kind of life naturally produces great changes in us. The Bible says; Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17) 13. How did the man who was previously blind express his new outlook on life? (9:25) 14. What new conduct does Jesus expect of one who has been saved? (8:11) 15. What means has God chosen to change our manner of life? (15:3) 16. After I have believed on Christ, what must I do to be a faithful disciple? (8:31) 17. What new privilege do I now enjoy? (16:24) 18. What does Jesus do for those in whom His Word abides? (15:7) 19. When can we be sure that God answers our prayers? (9:31) 20. What new commandment has Jesus given to His disciples? (13:34-35) - 3 -
