The Profession of the Faith The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, [All bow, at the following text ] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 3

A Prayer Before Mass Loving Father, as on my earthly pilgrimage I come to receive Your beloved Son under the veil of a sacrament, may I one day see Him face to face in glory, who lives and reigns with You for ever and ever. Amen. A Prayer After Receiving Holy Communion Anima Christi Soul of Christ, be my sanctification; Body of Christ, be my salvation; Blood of Christ, fill all my veins; Water of Christ's side, wash out my stains; Passion of Christ, my comfort be; O good Jesus, listen to me; In Thy wounds I fain would hide; Ne'er to be parted from Thy side; Guard me, should the foe assail me; Call me when my life shall fail me; Bid me come to Thee above, With Thy saints to sing Thy love, World without end. Amen. A Spiritual Communion Prayer for those unable to receive the Eucharist My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Our Faith: April Month May Month dedicated to the Blessed Holy Eucharist Mother Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn, then, O most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. V: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R/: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Barnabas reported to the apostles how Saul had seen the Lord on the way (Acts 9:26-31). Psalm I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people (Psalm 22). Second Reading This is God s commandment: that we may believe and love (1 John 3:18-24). Gospel I am the true vine; whoever remains in me will bear much fruit (John 15:1-8). BEARING FRUIT Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. John s words come to us on this day when the Gospel passage presents us with the great image of the vine and the branches. Jesus uses the image as a warning to those who have begun to distance themselves from the way of the Lord. One of the ways this happens is when we love God and others in word or speech instead of in deed and truth. What does it mean for us to remain in Christ? In an extension of the metaphor, the Lord gives us an example. If we remain in him, we will bear much fruit. As the branches, we draw strength from Christ who is the vine. This strength enables us to bear fruit to do the work of true discipleship. 5

Parish Life St. Thecla Women s Council: This Sunday at the 10am Family Mass the parish celebrates the annual May Crowning; after Mass we host the annual Mother/Daughter brunch. Religious Education News Registration is now open for the 2015-2016 year. If you have a child you would like to enroll in the program, you may pick up registration forms at the Parish Office or on-line at the Saint Thecla website. They should be returned to the Parish Office before the end of May so we can plan for next year. A copy of the Baptism certificate is required when you register. All those wishing to receive a sacrament (First Communion or Confirmation) must be in a program for two years prior to receiving the sacrament. Deacon John s transfer to a new assignment: In the Archdiocese of Chicago priests serve at a parish for a term of five to six years with the possibility for an extension. About ten years ago this change of assignment was also put in place for the permanent deacons who faithfully serve in their respective parishes. A little over two years ago Deacon John s ten years of assignment at Thecla came to a close and we asked for and received an extension. At this time Deacon John will receive a new assignment from the Archdiocese. We are all grateful for his dedication and love St. Thecla to St. Thecla. He will be the homilist at all the Masses on the weekend of May 23-24; and the Athletic Council is forming plans to have a reception after the 10am Mass on the 24th. Annual Mother s Day Breast Cancer Walk/Run Join us this Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10th for the Friends for a Cure s Breast Cancer walk or run. It's a day of remembrance, empowerment and, most of all, fun. This 1-mile or 3-mile walk or run will take place in the Norwood Park neighborhood and begins with 8am Mass here at St. Thecla. The walk begins at 9am and starts at St. Thecla School. For more information or to register, go to www.friendsforacure.net. Music Ministry: We encourage students (including high school and college) who play an instrument or have a vocal talent to consider presenting a musical selection at any of the 10 AM Masses. Please contact Aaron Dixon for more information. 773-792-3077 x203 adixon@saintthecla.org On April 22nd we celebrated Administrative Professionals Day at Saint Thecla School. It was a wonderful opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Bea Sansone and Ms. Luann Dohnal for all that they do to help keep our school running smoothly. Our theme was Thanks a Latte and the students and teachers had an opportunity to share their appreciation. They made coffee cups with special messages for Mrs. Sansone and Ms. Dohnal. We thank you Mrs. Sansone and Ms. Dohnal. We are grateful for you! From the Pro-Life Action Leauge: Protect Doctors Rights of Conscience in Illinois A new bill in the Illinois Senate which could be voted on any day now, would force healthcare providers to refer for abortions and have disastrous results for the state. The Pro-Life Action League is urging you to call your State Senator at their Springfield office and tell them to Vote NO on SB 1564! Under current Illinois law, which has been in place for nearly 20 years, healthcare providers have the right not to counsel or refer for any services which would violate their conscience. SB 1564 uses the force of government to impose new and unnecessary obligations that are contrary to this longstanding law that appropriately protects both the freedom of conscience and patient care. If passed, SB 1564 would: Require healthcare providers to refer or transfer patients to conscience-violating services like abortion. Force healthcare providers to discuss the benefits of abortion. Force pro-life pregnancy resource centers to send women to abortion clinics in direct contradiction of their core mission. Open the door to lawsuits against providers who did not provide information on legal treatment options in a timely manner. Exacerbate the existing shortage of healthcare providers 91% of faith-based physicians said in 2008 that they would rather stop practicing medicine than be forced to violate their conscience. Possibly endanger Illinois federal funding, as current federal law requires that state governments may not discriminate against providers who do not wish to perform or refer for abortions. Please call your State Senator today and tell them to Vote NO on SB 1564!
