ALL MUSIC 2017 / 2018

WELCOME TO MUSIC AT ALL SAINTS All Saints Music Guild is pleased to present our 2017 2018 season of great music at All Saints. From ancient music to premières of modern works, both sacred and secular, at All Saints you will find an exciting variety of ways to experience the beauty of holiness through music. We invite you to join us for our special choral services and concerts. In addition to our Sunday morning service of Choral Eucharist at 10:00 a.m., the choirs of All Saints offer a wide variety of opportunities to worship amid the sacred sounds of great choral music of the ages, especially music of the Anglican/ American choral tradition. Some of these offerings are: CHORAL EVENSONG The most uniquely Anglican of services, Evensong offers the opportunity to worship in meditation and prayer, as led by the choir. Music features sung prayers, glorious settings of the canticles and psalms, and hymns and anthems. These services are followed by a reception and the opportunity for fellowship. MISSA MYSTICA Throughout the liturgical year, the choirs mark many of the major feast days with choral settings of the Holy Eucharist. On these occasions the choir offers wonderful sung settings of the Eucharist. From Renaissance to contemporary, these great works have illuminated the liturgy through the ages. These services offer a special time for contemplation and reflection. SERVICES IN THE STYLE OF TAIZÉ Amid the glow of candlelight, these quiet, occasional Wednesday evening services offer a unique way to worship. The service includes chants from the Taizé community, and other traditions, as well as readings and periods of silence. CONCERTS Special occasions to encounter the transcendent in monumental works of choral and instrumental art. Because these works require performing forces that surpass normal liturgical limitations, admission fees apply for concerts only (except for All Saints Music Guild donors with season passes). We look forward to welcoming you to All Saints! Rev. Steve Huber Rector Canon Dr. Craig Phillips Director of Music Mr. Jason Klein Associate Director of Music

An Invitation to Join All Saints Music Guild for the 2017/2018 Season Long-standing parish and community support allows us to present sacred masterpieces and miniatures as occasions for prayer, contemplation and outreach to the greater Los Angeles area. We rejoice in the financial support of the All Saints Music Guild, which is independent of the parish operating budget. Generous patrons make possible the sacred sounds we all love and enjoy. We hope you will be inspired this season to participate in one the following categories: Archangel ($2,500 or more) Six season passes and complimentary copies of the All Saints CD catalog Saint ($1,000 - $2,499) Four season passes and complimentary copies of the All Saints CD catalog Patron ($500 - $999) Three season passes and one complimentary All Saints CD Benefactor ($250 - $499) Two season passes Member ($125-249) One season pass Contributor (up to $124) One ticket to any concert

A Heartfelt Thanks! special and heartfelt thanks to all who went above and A beyond their normal level of giving to support our All Saints Choir Pilgrimage to England. As I write this, we are just finishing our week of residency at Salisbury Cathedral, and prior to that we had a full week at Wells. I can say that this has been a tremendously rewarding and moving experience for me, and, I think I can say, for all the members of the choir. Several of them have written beautiful reflections about their time and experiences on this pilgrimage, and they have been posted daily on our Music at All Saints Facebook page. I invite you to visit the site and read about our time in England, as well as to view some beautiful photos of the choir and these magnificent cathedrals. It s anticipated that there will also be a forum (to be announced) during which you ll be able to hear directly from members of the choir about the pilgrimage. So again, thank you for your support. Your giving helped to make it possible to take the wonderful music that we cherish at All Saints out into the wider Anglican world - it has truly been a privilege and honor. Canon Dr. Craig Phillips Director of Music

TESSERAE: SONGS OF SALOMONE ROSSI - HARMONY FOR HUMANITY Sunday, February 11 at 5:00 p.m. Tickets: $25, $ 20 seniors and SCEMS, $10 students. Admission free with Music Guild Salomone Rossi (C 1570-1630) was a Jewish composer, violinist, and concertmaster at the Gonzaga Court in Mantova. While his instrumental works are splendid examples of the sensuous and fiery musical language of the early Baroque, it is his experimentation with setting Hebrew liturgical text that is perhaps one of the most astonishing facets of his career. During the period, there was great debate over the potential role of art music in the synagogue, and not surprisingly, Rossi was greatly in favor of considering the contemporary style of Monteverdi and the Ducal Chapel as a source of musical inspiration for Jewish worship. Tesserae wishes to celebrate the life and works of Salomone Rossi with a performance of his sacred and secular music, alongside music by his colleagues from the Mantuan court -- Viadana, Gastoldi, de Wert and, of course, Monteverdi. In this program, we wish to demonstrate the unique way in which Rossi incorporated a musical language that he loved -- that of the Gonzaga court -- as a way to bridge the gap between two diverse cultures.
