FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 4, 2010
TO PRAY TO PRAY 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 3/4, 2010 A Prayer on the Fourth of July Lord Jesus, you came into the world that we might all be free of sin and death. We Americans believe that political freedom is a secular reflection of that basic freedom. We thank you and through you the Creator in heaven for our political freedom. Help us never to take it for granted and to strive that freedom be experienced by everyone in our land, especially the poor and the oppressed, and eventually by all of humankind. Amen. from A Book of Irish American Blessings & Prayers by Andrew M. Greeley, Thomas More 1991 p. 204 First Reading: Isaiah 66.10-14 Isaiah envisions a restored Jerusalem as a nursing mother who nourishes and comforts her children. God s holy city is a place of rejoicing and life. Today, the Church is called to be the maternal face of God, nourishing and comforting her members. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 66 In Psalm 66 the Church summons the whole earth to praise and glorify God, who has done wondrous deeds. Second Reading: Galatians 6.14-18 Paul proclaims that the cross of Christ makes all things new. The cross brings life, not death, for the cross transforms humankind s relationship to the world. Through the cross Paul was set free from the narrow constraints of worldly success and set free to live for Christ. Gospel: Luke 10.1-12, 17-20 The disciples mission of proclaiming the dawn of God s reign was met with great success. The power of Jesus name enabled them even to expel demons. Yet, Jesus tempers their jubilation with a call to rejoice in a greater success: the inscription of their names in heaven. As we are sent by the Lord in mission, we may rejoice in our success or seek comfort in our failure. Yet, it is our fidelity to his call that leads to eternal life. Greeters welcome us, answer questions, and help us feel at home. Ushers take care of assisting our needs in many ways. They seat us, give directions, and help with the collection and the Gifts, etc. T here is another way to view liturgical hospitality, and this is much less tangible than the ways mentioned above, and so much more important. Liturgical hospitality includes opening ourselves to encounter God and each other, becoming transparent enough so that others can see us as wanting to be part of this community, letting go of any expectations we might have with regard to how we want the liturgy to be celebrated. L iturgical hospitality might mean we must quiet ourselves when we come to liturgy preoccupied with the pressures and demands of life. It might mean we are willing to encounter the stranger, to greet someone we don t know, to help someone who is physically challenged, to volunteer when the community needs additional liturgical ministers or workers for social events or justice actions. Above all, liturgical hospitality means we see in the face of others the Christ whom we have come to liturgy to encounter.

The interest in Fair Trade has grown far beyond the lead products of coffee, chocolate and tea during the past several years. Fair Trade is a system in which a fair price is paid at each link in the distribution chain.
