CALL TO CONFESSION CAROLINE KELLY PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of light, we confess that we live in the shadows of hypocrisy and self-righteousness. We honor you with our lips, but we have not served you in our hearts. We are satisfied with human traditions and norms and avoid your liberating truth. We have confused meekness with weakness, holiness with social conformity, and anger with righteousness. Forgive us, we pray. By the power of your word, save us from the prison of our self-satisfaction so that we may serve you with sincere hearts; through Jesus Christ, our Lord (Time for silent reflection and prayer)

WORSHIP NOTE The Clavinova that Nancy Hodges is playing today during the Opening Voluntary is a digital piano made by Yamaha. An electronic instrument, it is designed to serve primarily as an alternative to the traditional acoustic piano, both in the way it feels to play and in the sound it produces. It is intended to provide an accurate simulation of an acoustic piano, but it also mimics the sound of lots of other instruments as well. Listen as Nancy plays and see if you can identify what instruments you hear. Something to Ponder at Home This Week: Today s reading from the Gospel of Mark deals with the tension between tradition and innovation, calling us beyond arguments over what is old and what is new to a concern for what it vital. As you go throughout the week, what practices do you find yourself doing because they ve become a tradition; what practices are you doing because they are the latest edition; which of them are contributing to the vitality of your life? THIS MORNING S WORSHIP LEADERS Preacher... Rev. Caroline Kelly Liturgist...David Sticker Musician...Gwen Harris; Piano; Nancy Hodges, Piano and Clavinova; Mikayla Dodge; Soprano Julie Courtney, Alto; Zach Dodge, Baritone and Guitar Sound Technician...Joe Aurigemma Ushers....Charlene Lelinski and JoAnn Brotemarkle Thank you to this morning s acolyte and bell ringer. GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME VISITORS: We are glad you found your way to First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland. For more information about opportunities to worship, learn and serve with us, we encourage you to visit the table outside the church office. You can also learn more about us at www.fpc-cumberland.org and www.facebook.com/first.pres.cumberland. Childcare is provided in the nursery. An usher will be glad to direct you there. FRIENDSHIP PADS: Please locate and sign the red pad in your pew, tear off the sheet and place it in the collection plate during the offering. This important practice allows us to be mindful of new folks and long-time members as well, and is a good way to learn (or remember) the names of those with whom you are seated. PERSONAL LISTENING DEVICES: (amplifiers) are available in the back of the church for use during worship. Please see an usher for assistance. WORSHIP BROADCASTS: Our worship services are broadcast live on Sunday mornings by WCBC AM Radio, thanks to the generosity of members and friends. You can sponsor a broadcast (or share a sponsorship with someone) for $75. If you are interested, please contact Deb Hendrickson or the church office. This morning s broadcast is made possible by the generosity of Mary Jane O Rourke! We need sponsors for October 4 and 25. SANCTUARY FLOWERS: The special flowers in the sanctuary this morning are presented in loving memory of William Lee Shaffer, Jr., by his family. There is an opening for flowers on September 27! Please contact Michael Levitas or the church office if you would like to sponsor flowers.

MISSION TWO NEW BEGINNINGS SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES: The Session recently endorsed two service opportunities that meet our New Beginnings goal of engaging us in service to the community. Is God calling you to participate? NAILS Project: If you like to work with your hands, fixing and building things, then consider setting aside a day (Saturday, October 17) to work on a local NAILS project with other Western Maryland Presbyterian churches. Our goal is to have 6-8 people from our congregation participate in this one-time project. CASA Program: If you have a special place in your heart for children, you may want to consider becoming a CASA Volunteer and serving as an advocate for a child in the foster care system of Allegany County. This opportunity requires formal training with CASA and about 10-15 hours a month for a year. For either opportunity, please contact Brittany Jackson for more information (301-777-3700 or firstpresbyteriansecretary@gmail.com). BUILDINGS & GROUNDS SAVE THE DATE: CHURCH FALL CLEAN UP DAY! On Saturday, October 3 rd, the Buildings & Grounds Committee invites you to come out and help clean up the church and grounds from 9AM-12PM. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NURSERY WORKER POSITION AVAILABLE: We are seeking a part-time caregiver for our church nursery. If you know someone who loves children and wants to be a loving caregiver in a Christian environment, please encourage him or her to send a resume to firstpresbyteriansecretary@gmail.com to be considered. Thank you! A MEN'S RETREAT is scheduled for October 10th at Penn Alps. Rev. Walt Peters (our recent guest preacher) will be our facilitator. For information contact Bryan Wodaski at 301-268-5947. WORSHIP & MUSIC SUMMER CHOIR MAY BE FOR YOU! Have you thought about joining the Sanctuary Choir but feel you don t have the time and cannot make a commitment? Well, here is your golden opportunity!
