The Holy Family, of course, is unique. One member is God, another is sinless, and the third is a saint. But the great lesson of today is that although God could have come into the world in any way he pleased, he chose to become a member of a family, obedient to his earthly parents, and yet totally devoted to the Heavenly Father s will, as we all must be. He also shared the vulnerability that comes with being a member of a human family. Herod is going to search for the child in order to destroy him. St. Joseph here plays the unbelievable role of protecting God. His readiness to do so speaks to every father about the role of protector, and to our whole society about the need we have for good and faithful fathers. The culture of life depends just as much on fathers making the right choices as on mothers doing so. Strong families are an integral aspect of the Culture of Life. It is precisely the breakdown of family structure that increases the temptation to abort, or to resort to euthanasia or a lack of proper care for the elderly. PART II HEALING PART II - Healing The celebration of the sacrament of Penance is always an act in which the Church proclaims its faith, gives thanks to God for the freedom with which Christ has made us free, and offers its life as a spiritual sacrifice in praise of God s glory, as it hastens to meet the Lord Jesus. (Introduction to the new RITE, n.7) Why must we confess our sins, when God s forgiveness is offered without question? As sinners, we wound God s perfect honor and never ceasing love, our own human dignity as a child of God, and we negatively affect the spiritual well-being of the whole Church. (CCC, 1487) To return to communion with God, after having lost it through sin, is a process offered us through this healing sacrament. Through the Sacrament of Penance, the total act of return to God (return to the state of grace), the sinner experiences both conversion and repentance. The penitent s acts are repentance, confession or disclosure of sins to the priest, and the intention to make reparation and attempt to avoid repeating these acts, and do works of reparation (Penance for sins). (CCC, 1491) The action of the priest is the offering of absolution. The spiritual effects of the sacrament of Penance are: reconciliation with God by which the penitent recovers grace; reconciliation with the Church; remission of the eternal punishment incurred by mortal sins; remission, at least in part, of temporal punishments resulting from sin; peace of conscience; an increase of spiritual strength for the Christian journey Individual confession of grave (mortal) sins followed by absolution remains the only ordinary means of reconciliation with God and with the Church.
