SEPTEMBER 10: TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings: Ez 33:7-9/Rom 13:8-10/Mt 18:15-20 Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. We are not made to follow Christ on our own. We are part of the body, part of community. As such we are responsible not just for ourselves, but also responsible to watch over our brothers and sisters. We are our brother's keeper, and he is ours. We are all called to holiness, and that means that we must encourage one another, and at times lovingly correct one another. It also means that we must look for those who are missing from our parish pews. We all know people who no longer join us at Mass, who may have left the Church for whatever reason. Many of them are just looking for an invitation to return. Can you invite them and make them feel welcome? ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OUR PARISH OUR MOTHER OF THE EUCHARIST PRAYER GROUP Come join us for song, praise, worship and fellowship on Thursday September 14th, 6:30PM-8:00PM, Msgr. Note From the Pope Pope Francis: God does not want sad and unwilling people to follow Him These six children have just had the trip of a lifetime. When the pope arrived in St. Peter's Square, he asked them to accompany him to greet the pilgrims. They certainly had a great time. Then, during the weekly catechesis, the pope proposed that Christians remember their initial encounters with Jesus during difficult or trying moments. He also said that Jesus did not tire of asking people a deep question. POPE FRANCIS I too would like to ask the young people that are here in the square, and to those who are listening via media outlets: 'You who are young, what are you looking for? What are you searching for in your heart?'" The pope explained that God does not want people to follow him sad and unwillingly, but instead wants those men and women who transmit the spark of their first encounter with Jesus in their eyes. POPE FRANCIS Many of us see Christians who with their eyes alone transmit the joy of faith. I ask you, for each person to respond to himself: do you carry the wind of joy in your heart? Everyone respond in his heart. Do I carry within me, in my heart, the wind of joy? The pope recalled that this week both Catholics and Orthodox will celebrate the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. He announced that to commemorate it, he will publish a written message with ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. POPE FRANCIS We ask those who hold influential positions to listen to the cry of the land and the cry of the poor, who suffer the most ecological imbalances." Among those in the audience were players from Chapecoense, the Brazilian soccer team that lost much of its squad in a plane crash in 2016. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS Sirach 27: 30-28:7 Psalm 103: 1-4, 9-12 Romans 14: 7-9 Matthew 18: 21-35 As the Lord is kind and merciful (Ps), so should we be forgiving toward one another (1). Our forgiveness is to be without limit (3) and so reflect Christ s eternal love. He alone is Lord (2). Altar and Rosary Newzbytes It s time for the Altar and Rosary 50/50 raffle. A copy of the raffle ticket will be in the bulletin next week or you may purchase yours after the weekend Masses. Proceeds from ticket sales are used for purchasing candles, Altar linen and vestments, wine and other supplies for the Altar. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: One Bread, One Body, One Family the Eucharist, what an awesome gift the Lord has given us! At the Eucharist, we come together to celebrate God s unconditional love for each of us and are nourished with the Bread of Life so that we might share that love with others in tangible ways. Mass strengthens our bond as a family of faith and challenges us to give witness to the love we have found in Jesus. One of the ways in which we can do this is through our support of the annual Bishop s Fund Appeal. This important Appeal provides support for our whole Diocesan family, impacting the lives of so many of our sisters and brothers. We are able to: Encourage women and men to discern a Church vocation with the assistance of our diocesan Vocations Office; Offer programs and events such as Pre-Cana and Family Guggenheim that help to enrich marriages and families through the efforts of our diocesan Family Life Ministry; Assist parents who choose a Catholic School Education for their children with financial aid from the Tuition Assistance Program; Provide opportunities for our young people to express and celebrate their Catholic faith by participating in diocesan Youth Rallies and enjoying Camp Guggenheim; Bring solace to the sick, the hurting and the discouraged, by offering them hope and prayer through the assistance offered by the Bishop s Good Samaritan Fund. We hope to raise $1,300,000 for the ministries and programs supported by the Bishop s Fund. In 2016, requests for assistance with medical and prescription expenses, heating and utility costs, and rent or mortgage payments reached nearly $115,000. Many of the requests came from parents with young children who too often must choose between buying food or medicines and paying the rent or mortgage. What a terrible position to be in! Similar to last year, any funds raised over our goal will be used to further supplement the Bishop s Good Samaritan Fund. I invite every family in the Diocese of Ogdensburg to prayerfully consider making a gift to the Bishop s Fund Appeal. Can you imagine all that we will be able to accomplish if every family participates in this year s Appeal? It is my prayer that you will consider making a gift at whatever level of support you are able. With much appreciation for your generosity and faithfulness and with the promise of prayers for you and your loved ones, I am Gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg
The Living Stones questions and answers will continue in future bulletins.
