Monsignor Henry Kriegel, Pastor Saint Patrick Parish Saint Hedwig Parish 130 East Fourth Street 521 East Third Street Erie, PA 16507 Erie, PA 16507 454-8085 FAX 459-8685 454-6232 FAX 454-8096 stpats@neo.rr.com sainthedwig@neo.rr.com www.saintpatrickparisherie.org www.sainthedwigparisherie.org Office Hours: Mon - Thurs 9AM-Noon, Office Hours: Tuesday 8AM 3:30PM 1 PM - 4PM; Friday 9AM - Noon From the Pastor s Desk Today is the Fourth Sunday of Lent and we read from Joshua. There is a similarity to this reading and our gospel, the story of the Prodigal Son one of the most powerful stories of forgiveness in all of the scriptures. Both narratives proclaim the faithfulness of God who waits, merciful and forgiving, for the return of the one who lost his way, and then returns home. In this text, it is Israel who returns. Having fled to Egypt in a time of famine, they have been enslaved for centuries until Moses led them back to God s promise. But because of their disobedience and lack of faith, they wander for forty years. A fuller reading of this story notes that none of those who left Egypt were allowed to enter the Promised Land because of their lack of faith; only those born in the desert eventually entered. Today is Laetare Sunday, Latin for rejoice because we are reminded that God will care for us despite our lack of faith and that he will forgive and welcome us when we recognize our failings. Paul reminds us that ours is not the novelty of new land celebrated in Joshua, but a newness that is total and complete in Christ. We are a new creation. Like the father in today s gospel, God is overeager to reconcile, for while we were disobedient, he sent his Son to reconcile us to himself. Discord is part of human life and it was evident at Corinth, which Paul addresses as he encourages them to reconcile with one another Today s gospel speaks of the inexhaustible mercy of God. There is a strange twist in this story and that is with the older brother who takes the stage at the end of the story. The love of the father cannot penetrate a heart unwilling to receive it. We never learn of the elder boy s decision. It is possible he spends the night in a den of anger rather than feasting with the others. Note that in both cases, it is the father who goes out to the sons. As the elder, the angry brother was entitled sons. With the younger, the sight of the boy brings him running; with the elder, his absence sparks the father s initiative. As the story points out so very well, the father is always ready to embrace and forgive us. The crucial question is: are we ready to accept it? Our second Scripture classes will be held this Wednesday with the morning session at 10 AM in the church and the evening class at 6 PM in the church. The morning session will address the passion and crucifixion as found presented quite differently in each of the four gospels. The evening session will be an introduction to the four gospels. Each class is 45 minutes to an hour. I hate to nag on something, but I really need your help with this year s Catholic Services Appeal. At St. Hedwig s, we have to raise over $10,000 and at St. Patrick s over $63,000. You can make a pledge and pay it over the coming 12 months or you can pay in full. Contribution statements have been mailed out from both parishes for 2015. If you would like one and have not received it, please call the parish office, and we will send one. The Knights and Ladies of St. Patrick will sponsor their annual St. Patrick s Day parade next Saturday. The Knights and Ladies of St. Patrick s will hold their 2016 initiation of new members next Sunday with a 5 PM Mass in church followed by a cocktail hour and dinner at the Cathedral Center. Among Lenten programs being offered by parishes in the East Erie Deanery is a program on Tuesday from 6:30 8:30 in the Ward Center at St. Mark s Parish, Lawrence Park. Barbara Edwards, licensed psychologist, will speak on the psychological/spiritual approach to dealing with

From the Pastor s Desk continued anger. Anyone interested in attending should contact St. Mark s Parish (899-3000). Polish/English confessions will be offered on Palm Sunday at 2 PM at St. Stanislaus Parish. St. Stanislaus is also offering Stations of the Cross on the Wednesdays during Lent at 7 PM. As part of our Pastoral Planning process, we are all attempting to do more things together, to share our programs, etc. with other parishes. We re all in this together; we re not in competition. I read recently that over 60,000 people received ashes at St. Patrick s Cathedral in New York City on Ash Wednesday. By the time I finished here that day, I felt we were running a close second!! On a serious note, I have to tell you how impressive it was to see all of the Erie Insurance, Hamot and other professional people who work downtown attend the noon Mass. I always love it when I look out from the altar and see St. Patrick s Church completely full. We re continuing with some ongoing maintenance work at St. Patrick s. At the same time we are insulating the rectory attic, we are also putting insulation around all of the pipes in the basement of the church. If you go down there in the winter, it is boiling hot; and they tell me that we will recover 20% of the cost of this in the first year alone by saving on heat. And, finally, we re doing work in the rectory kitchen. You may recall the ceiling collapsed earlier this year. That has been repaired, the tile work on the walls restored and three new windows have been ordered which, again, will make a big difference with heat. FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 6, 2016 194 DAYS TO THE IRISH FESTIVAL Another born & raised Erie couple, Terry and Linda Pfeffer, were married in 1967 at St. George s. They spent 40 years in Pittsburgh, making a living, Terry in accounting and investments, Linda as a paralegal, and raising their two sons, Glenn and Gregg (who was married at St. Pat s to Jen Verno). When Terry retired in 2007, they moved back. Terry spends his time hunting and fishing and keeps his hands in accounting a bit, and Linda paints and gardens, and they both golf and enjoy time with friends and family, including two grand-daughters, Nena and Paige. And, oh yes, Terry overseas festival set-up and Linda is in charge of ticket sales. I think they work harder at being retired that they did at their careers. Set-up is a big, big job with lots of grunt work and brain work, too many details to mention, and did I mention grunt work, and Terry gets it done, done right, and done in time for the bagpipers to open the festival. He s in the street for a solid week set up starts on Tuesday, tear down usually finishes the following Tuesday. Sure, he gets a lot of help, but, he can always use more. Linda takes responsibility for ticket sales something in the range of 35,000 tickets get passed around the festival from Friday afternoon to Sunday night. And of course shows up for set-up as well and keeps an eye on Terry. We ll set up the official volunteer website a bit closer to the festival, but if you have questions, concerns, comments, or offers of help and support, you can reach Terry at tlpfef5@gmail.com and Linda at tlpfef@gmail.com. Gary and Becky Johnson, Festival Chairs, gjohnson@brotolosouth.com or beckykj@neo.rr.com. We welcome your comments, suggestions, questions, or blank checks made out to the Erie Irish Festival. A heartfelt thank you from Patty Dailey to all who donated jewelry and purses for the Irish Festival. Forgot to bring yours last week? Don t worry, Patty and her committee will continue to accept your donations up to festival time, just drop off your treasures in the Trinity Gift Shop before or after masses! THANKS!
