Winter Festivities In Sri Mayapur you have no time to stop Everyday is amazing and sweet and intense all at the same time. There is so much to see and learn in Sri Dhama Mayapur. One thing that makes my heart feel like it will come out of my chest, is the loud and transcendental beat of the drums at the elephant procession. The sound pierces your whole body and goes right through The loud drums played by the Gurukula students will carry you to another time and place Contents Page 2 Winter Festival Page 3 Pushpa Abhishek Events Page 4 Glories of Navadwipa Prathana Lalasamayi Prabhupada Speaks Kid Corner Page 5 Gita Jayanti Mayapur Sankirtan Page 6 Cooking with SrilaPrabhupada GoPuja / Gopastami Page 7 Festivals at a Glance Donor Appeal Produced and Published by: Mayapur Tourism Department ISKCON Chandrodaya Mandir Sri Dham Mayapur Nadia, West Bengal 741313 Ph: +91(3472)245-219 www.mayapur.com www.visitmayapur.com sanga.mayapur@gmail.com To wander through the nine islands of Sri Navadwipa-dhama is the essence of all opulence, the essence of all religious principles, the essence of all bhajana, the essence of all perfections, the essence of all glories and the essence of all kinds of oceans of sweetness your heart, you feel small and humble hearing those special drums and mantras. Every Saturday afternoon during the winter months a few boys walk, from their school in the woods behind the ISKCON complex, to the Elephant Care Center. After the boys dress up our two young elephants in bright colors, they head on over to the temple. Once they reach the temple the priests place tiny brass Deities of Radha Madhava in the care of the boys on top of the larger elephant, Laksmipriya. Hundreds of devotees gather along the path where the two beautifully decorated elephants lead a slow procession all around the campus. Heading the parade are the deities of Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, the two divine incarnations, whose revival of the bhakti culture in the 16th Century started in West Bengal, and swept around India. Surrounding Sri Sri Gaura Nitai s cart is a boisterous kirtan where everyone is blissfully chanting and dancing. The procession is an amazing experience that everyone should take part in. Devotees carefully make beautiful designs of colored rice powder and flower pedals, called rangoli s, on the path where the elephants will walk. At each rangoli, the Lord is greeted by devotees, and offered nice preparations that various well-wishers have prepared for them. Prasadam is then distributed amongst a few very fortunate people. The procession then continues onto the next rangoli design. Serving as a backdrop to the procession is the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium. The temple is in its third year of construction, and is on the way to becoming one of India s largest religious monuments. Though on a tight schedule to get the temple ready for 2016, the workers can t resist to break for a moment and watch the weekly parade. As the procession ventures around the new temple the hearts of Their devotees are filled with optimism about the many centuries that lay ahead in Sridham Mayapur. The loud drums played by the Gurukula students will carry you to another time and place, you will realize that Sri Mayapur is the spiritual world, and feel the drum beats are actually the elephant footsteps One can easily remember Lord Krsna and sincerely feel He is sitting on top of Laksmipriya giving His blessings to all the devotees. This is really a special time in Mayapur and I wish to thank everyone who is involved in making every Saturday night such a wonderful and heart touching experience. I feel blessed to be able to participate every Saturday night. I go to bed with the drums still echoing in my mind, dreaming all night about the Lord is sitting on top of His elephant waving at all His devotees Until next Saturday Mayapur Sanga - Winter Issue Page 2

Jananivasa Prabhu said that he was instructed by Srila Prabhupada to celebrate festivals related to the pastimes of the Sri Sri Radha-Krishna in a grand way in Sri Mayapur. These pastimes are going on eternally in the spiritual world. By celebrating these festivals, we can engage ourselves directly in the service of the Lord. Especially the Pusya Abhiseka festival, where the Lord is bathed in soft, cooling petals of fragrant flowers. These festivities bring us closer to the mood of Vrindavana. Devotees at Mayapur eagerly look forward to celebrating Pusya abhisheka Purnima. This is a festival of joy, as we get a chance to offer some personal service to our dearest Sri Radha-Madhava. On this day Sri Radha-Madhava and Asta Sakhis are offered flower outfits lovingly prepared by the devotees. The planning for the festival begins a few weeks before by our deity decoration team. On the day before Pusya abhisheka, devotees start making the flower outfits from 11 am onwards up until dawn. The blissful service of stitching multi colored flowers and beads onto the outfit leave devotees spiritually enlivened. On the evening of Krsna Pusya Abhisheka Purnima, Sri Sri Radha-Madhava are bathed Pushpha Abhishek in flower petals. Much to the satisfaction of soul, Puspa Abhiseka continues on for almost two hours. First small Sri Radha-Madhava deities have Their flower shower, and after that flower petals are showered on big Radha- Madhava and the Asta Sakhis. The Supreme Lord performs all these wonderful pastimes, which go on eternally in Goloka dhama. Celebrating these festivals in the association of devotees gives us a glimpse of that unlimited happiness and an opportunity to serve the Lord in many ways. Many senior devotees such as HH Jayapataka swami, HH Subhag swami, HH Bhakti Purusottama swami, HH Bhakti Vigna vinasana Narasimha Swami, HH Bhakti Vishramba Madhava Swami also bless us with their presence. Srila Prabhupada once explained the festival this way: Krishna was just a toy in the hands of the Gopis, so one day the Gopis decided that we shall decorate Him. Pusya abhisheka means a ceremony to decorate the deity profusely with flowers, ornaments, cloths. After there should be lavish feasting and a procession through the streets, so that all the citizens should see how beautiful Krishna appears. The burning fire of this material world will cease, as well as all desires for sense gratification, for by being with the devotees of the Lord all my longings will be fulfilled. Becoming maddened by their chanting of the holy name of the Lord, I will fall down and roll in the dust at the devotees feet, completely covering myself with that sacred powder. When, in a kadamba grove on the bank of the Yamuna river, will I behold the beauty of the Divine Couple within the eyes of my heart? When will a sakhi show her gracious mercy to me by engaging me in conjugal service, keeping me at her own lotus feet? And when will I catch a glimpse of Their divine conjugal pastimes? Becoming filled with the ecstasy of pure spiritual love I will lose consciousness. Falling down, I will remain unconscious for a long time, and will completely forget about my own body. Regaining consciousness, I will again remember that sight which I saw while in trance darsana of the ecstatic pastimes of Krsna that caused me to swim in an ocean of tears. Making repeated requests in the presence of the devotees, I will ask them to give just one drop of the ocean of devotion to this wicked person. Bhaktivinoda s incessant longing is for the shelter of the lotus feet of Sri Ananga Manjari. Glories of Navadwipa Dham Mother Parvati said to Lord Siva, O Lord, please describe exactly how and when Srimati Radhika created Navadvipa. Lord Siva explained: Absorbed in thoughts of Krishna, Radha began to think. She then gathered Her sakhis (friends) together between the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers. She created there a beautiful place, decorated with creepers and filled bumblebees. Deer and buck were happily enjoying as they wondered about, and the whole area was filled with the fragrance of jasmine, mallika and malati flowers. That transcendental abode was adorned with tulasi forests. On Radha s order, the Ganges and Yamuna with their pleasant water and banks acted as a moat to protect the garden. Radha dressed in a colorful cloth, then began to play a beautiful melody on a flute in order to attract Krishna. Attracted by that melody, Krishna appeared in that enchanting place. Radha, the attractor of Krishna s mind, seeing that Krishna had come, held his hand and experienced ecstatic delight. Then Krishna understanding Radha s mood spoke in a voice choked with love. Srila Prabhupada Speaks If the whole society performs its respective duties and remains in Krishna consciousness, there is no doubt that all of its members will live very peacefully and happily. Without wanting the necessities of life, the whole world will be turned into Vaikuntha, a spiritual abode. Even without being transferred to the kingdom of God, by following the injunctions of Srimad- Bhagavatam and prosecuting the duties of Krishna consciousness all human society will be happy in all respects. Childrens Club Just for Me You have created this wonderful place. I will transform this place, filling it with new sakhis and groves. The devotees will glorify this place as Nava Vrindavan. As this place is like an island, or dvip the wise will call it Navavipa.By my order, all the holy places will reside here. Because you have created this place for my pleasure, I will live here eternally. O dear Radha, like Vrindavan, this place is extremely pure. If anyone comes here just once, he will obtain the results of going to all the sacred places. Lord Siva continued, O most fortunate Parvati, saying this, Krishna, the Lord of Radha, merged with Radha s body and began to reside there eternally. Seeing this form all the sakhis took on a male form to serve the Lord. At that time the tumultuous vibration of Jaya Gaurahari! filled the four directions: From that time the devotees call this form of Krishna, Gaurahari. As Radha is Gauri(fair) and Krishna is Hari, when they combine in one form they are Gaurahari. Gita Jayanti Gita Jayanti is the anniversary commemorating the day that Srimad Bhagavad Gita was spoken by Lord Sri Krishna to His dearest devotee Arjuna, at the place now known as Jyotisar Tirtha, amid the waring families of the Kurus and the Pandavas at Kurukshetra. If one wishes you can still go to visit that place, and see the monument erected there with Krishna as Parthasarati (the chariot driver) and Arjuna the warrior on their chariot. The ashram resident who maintain the shrine claim the tree that is next to Them is a growth of the original tree that witnessed the actual day the Bhagavad Gita was spoke. Traditionally devotees come to Kurukshetra (Dharmakshetra) to recite Bhagavad Gita from early morning until the next morning, perform arati to Bhagavad Gita and Krishna & Arjuna upon the chariot, and offer lamps deep daan at Brahma Sarovar. The devotees also conduct shobha yatras and seminars on the significance of the Gita in the modern age. Devotees who cannot get to Jyotisar Tirtha remember the blessed event by reciting Bhagavad Gita, and performing Bhagavad Gita ahuti of each verse or selected chapters into the sacred fire. Discussion of the subject matter of Bhagavad Gita in the association of devotees takes place in all corners of the globe. Distribution of Bhagavad Gita s on this day is also a very auspicious activity to perform. In Mayapur, over 1000 students of Gita Study Course, a distance education course conducted by Mayapur preaching department convened for three day seminar culminating on Gita Jayanti. Bhagavad Gita s adorned the altars of Sri Radha-Madhava, Sri Panca tattva, Sri Narasimhadeva and Srila Prabhupada. Gita chanting or reciting of 700 verses of Bhagavad Gita started at 8.30 a.m. Each chapter was recited in various meters, culminating in a Gita Yajna being performed with oblations after each sloka of 18th chapter. Devotees then did harinama circumambulating the temple. To hear worldwide devotees with different cultural backgrounds absorbed in chanting the shlock s with such an intense prayerful mood was an out of world experience. I offer my millions of obeisances to Srila Prabhupada who delivered this message as it is. To show our gratefulness to Srila Prabhupada, enthusiastic devotees including children and students were moving around the campus distributing Bhagavad Gita s to the visitors to Mayapur. Srila Prabhupada Book Marathon Ki Jai! Srimad Bhagavad Gita Ki Jai! There is no distinction made between those who are fit and those who are not fit to hear or take part in the sankirtana movement. It should therefore be preached without discrimination. The only purpose of the preachers of the sankirtana movement must be to go on preaching without restriction. That is the way in which Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu introduced this sankirtana movement to the world. Cc. Adi 9.29 Mayapur Sanga - Winter Issue Page 5

Cooking with Srila Prabhupada Guava Jam 1 ¼ pounds just-ripe guavas 1 teaspoon coriander seeds ½ teaspoon cumin seeds ½ teaspoon cardamom seeds ¼ teaspoon kalanji 2-3 dried red chilies, or as desired 8 whole cloves one cinnamon stick 2 cups sugar ½ tablespoon lime juice Cut the guavas into eighths and steam them in a steamer basket for about 45 minutes. Over low heat, dry-roast the coriander, cumin, cardamom, kalanji, chilies, and cinnamon stick until the cumin darkens a few shades. Crush the cinnamon stick with a mallet, then coarsely grind all the spices, either in a spice mill or with a mortar and pestle. Transfer the softened guavas to a saucepan and mash them to a puree (or pass them through a food mill). Place the saucepan over low heat and add the sugar and lime juice. Stirring, cook until the jam is thick, about 218-221 degrees F (103-105 degrees C) on a candy thermometer. Remove the pan from the heat, stir in the powdered spices, and cool. Offer to Krsna. Store the jam in well-sealed containers. Once opened, keep refrigerated. It will last for up to two weeks. GoPuja & Gopastami On the day of Gopastami the devotees here in Mayapur, glorified mother cow with utmost respect, and devotion. There was a procession of cows, yajna, feeding the cows, and much more. The eighth lunar day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kārttika is known by authorities as Gopāstamī. From that day, Lord Vāsudeva served as a cowherd, whereas previously He had tended the calves. The morning started with an amazing darshan of SS Radha-Madhava and the ashtasakhi s all giving us a view of their lotus feet. The sub-altar was also beautifully decorated with many cows and gopas, waterfalls, and bright green foliage. Many of our goshala s cows were then led in a procession around the campus invoking an auspicious mood. Once they returned to the goshala many senior devotees began glorifying mother cow. While some devotees sat for the lecture, others were busy feeding, petting, and bathing the cows. The goshala was offering plates of prasadam for offering to the cows. Each plate had many items such as chapatti, sprouts, gur, and a special cake. Then came the time for all of the participants to honor prasadam. The mood was very loving as everybody s hearts were being touch through their service to mother cow. Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: When Lord Rāma and Lord Krishna attained the age of pauganda (six to ten) while living in Vrindāvana, the cowherd men allowed Them to take up the task of tending the cows. Engaging thus in the company of Their friends, the two boys rendered the land of Vrindāvana most auspicious by imprinting upon it the marks of Their lotus feet. Lord Krishna wanted to encourage His cowherd boyfriends, who had been swallowed by Aghāsura and then stolen by Lord Brahmā. Therefore the Lord decided to bring them into the palmtree forest called Tālavana, where there were many delicious ripe fruits. Out of great affection, Nanda Mahārāja had previously considered Krishna too small and immature to take care of full-grown cows and bulls, but considering Lord Krishna s spiritual body had apparently grown slightly in age and strength, the senior men of Vrindāvana, headed by Nanda Mahārāja, decided to promote Krishna from the task of herding calves to the status of a regular cowherd boy. He would now take care of the full-grown cows, bulls and oxen. Mayapur Sanga - Winter Issue Page 6
