6th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 11, 2018 The Food Bank is in of white rice and dried beans. Your St. Vincent De Paul Society in Action Your Society's Furniture Assistance Program for Homeless Mary is a single parent with a 5 year old daughter. She said that she has been homeless since my daughter was born. She has lived those years on and off with her daughter s godparents. With DSHS/TANF assistance, Mary completed job training and two weeks ago started a job as Health Unit Coordinator at a local hospital. She works per diem at more than $20 per hour and has recently been working full time. Although her yearly income places her in the HUD Very Low Income category, she now earns enough to be financially stable. Just recently DSHS (Department of Social and Health Services) provided assistance with her first month s rent enabling her to move into her apartment. She called for help with furniture to St. Theresa's SVDP Society. By the time the Society visited her, she had been resourceful enough to find a dining table/chairs, air mattress, and an easy chair. Through the Society's collaboration with the NW Furniture Bank (NWFB) in Tacoma, we sponsored a shopping trip to the NWFB warehouse for her where she was able to select a bed, dresser, couch, book shelf, and end table. Besides paying a nominal fixed fee for the furniture selected, the Society also paid for delivery of the furniture to her apartment. Mary was very appreciative of the help. Society members were very pleased to help make Mary s apartment a home and share her celebration after 5 years of homelessness. WOMEN S FELLOWSHIP Next meeting: Wednesday, February 28th Narthex Room from 9:30 11:30 am All women are welcome to join us as we study: Romans: Amazing Grace by Loyola Press. We keep extra books, so drop in any time and join us for fellowship, scripture reflection & prayer. For any questions, call Stacey Sherburne at 206-304-9617. DESIGNS FOR LIFE Designs for Life gave 245 hats, scarves and mittens for the Giving tree. Without these items many of the families would have gotten only one gift for their child/children. We are so happy we could help! We will meet only once in February on Monday, February 26 at 7:30 pm at the church. Come join us as we use our hands to praise the Lord and help those in need. We have baby layettes, prayer shawls and lap blankets available if you know someone in need. Join us to crochet, knit and sew for pregnant women in need, homeless people, the giving tree and other needs in the parish. We have resent the end of year tax letters for the parishioners that we know this has affected. UNACCEPTABLE DONATIONS NEEDED COOPERATION.Parishioners, I need to ask that you refrain from bringing unrequested donated items and placing them next to the St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Box in the Church Narthex. For your convenience, St. Theresa s SVDP Society does schedule at least 3 Clean Your Closets weekends when you may bring clean wearable clothing and shoes. Unfortunately, we lack the storage space to store UNREQUESTED DONATIONS BETWEEN THESE SCHEDULED WEEKENDS. You should also be aware that because of safety issues no organization or agency may accept baby items (car seats, strollers, etc.) or food items with expired usage dates. I thank you for your cooperation in this matter. PARISH STEWARDSHIP We wish to take this opportunity to thank those of you that have made your financial commitment for 2018. It is not too late if you have not. Any gift, no matter the size will make a difference, and help us as a parish to stay Consistent. Constant, and Continual. It is imperative this year that we meet or exceed budget for our Sunday collections. STATUS OF SUNDAY 5PM MASS As I stated last weekend in the bulletin, AB Sartain has granted permission for our parish to proceed with the no longer having a 5PM Sunday Evening Mass. The permission was granted after careful review of the letter and materials that I sent to AB Sartain carefully outlining the full collaboration of our parish leadership, and myself on the matter. Not only attendance was one of the reasons, other reasons as I have shared prior are the lack of the youth attending that particular Mass. As we have stated prior, the original intent of the Mass was to coincide with our Life Teen Program, and the ability of the youth to serve as musicians, lectors, greeters, Eucharistic ministers, etc. For the last few years, that has not been the case. We are asking the youth to serve at the 11 AM Mass and rotating at least twice a month at that Mass. Hence, they will have greater visibility at the Mass, and greater support of the parish. Matt is in communication with parents, and youth on timing. This weekend will mark our conclusion of the 5PM Sunday Mass. However, this is not any type of finality, it is a new beginning. BROKEN PIPE IN BASEMENT OF MAIN CHURCH Update on our broken pipe, destroyed electrical panel, and a host of other things The good news is that the pipe is fixed, and we finally have a new electrical panel installed, and all of the lights that feed off of that panel are working, hot water is working, and heat is all working! The clean up is still continuing, and the bad news is that the majority of the items that were in the basement at the time that the pipe burst, are now deemed contaminated, and non salvageable. It is very sad to see so many items destroyed. But, I must follow the guidelines for contaminated materials, and to ensure that nothing leaves the basement that is contaminated. The remainder of the clean up and disposable of these contaminated will be taking place within the next two weeks. I have sent out an email to those groups that have items in the basement. We will have to wait for the insurance company on how those items will be replaced if at all. Secondly, our insurance company will pay for the replacement of the electrical panel, the contaminated items, and some of the restoration service after the parish pays a $2,500 deductible. In addition, the insurance company will not pay for the replacement of the pipe that burst, only what damage was caused by the pipe bursting. At this time, I am unsure of what the total cost to the parish of this incident will be. ARCHDIOCESAN CAPTIAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE The Archdiocesan Capital Campaign is scheduled to begin for some parishes in February, which is entitled Wave 1. St. Theresa Parish is not in Wave 1, but will participate in Wave 2 along with all the parishes in the South King County Deanery, North and South Seattle Deaneries. That wave will begin in June 2018, and continue through November 2018. The overall support for an archdiocesan campaign is strong all throughout the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese is strongly building upon the positive results of the initial study by immediately moving forward with the campaign. This major fundraising effort will help all of us to make significant investments in our priests, our women religious, our parishes and, ultimately our faith. As you know I have served on the Pastoral Leadership Committee for months now, and have spoken at parishes in regards to support for the campaign. There are many questions about the campaign, and hopefully in the next months to come we as a parish can ask our questions, and our questions will be answered. I will be sharing with PC this week at their monthly meeting our parish goal, the next steps, and after that meeting, I will be writing to all of you outlining the campaign once I receive the informational packet from the Diocese. Even though our phase is a bit off, I want everyone to know the expectations, and hopefully our parish will support this endeavor with open hearts, and minds. This weekend I will be away from the parish working with some of the smaller parishes, and their leadership as they prepare for Wave 1 and Wave 2 of the capital campaign.
