The Emmaus News Columbus Indiana Area Emmaus Community, Inc. Letter to the Community: VOLUME 23 ISSUE 5 MAY Emmaus and Chrysalis Communies, We just completed Men s Walk 95 and Women s Walk 96. What a blessing. I would like to say to Phil Newton and Robin Everhart, along with their respecve teams, thank you for a JOB WELL DONE! You were definitely the Hands and Feet of Christ. Like many communies we have struggled over the last several years with declining a-endance of our Men s walks mostly, but the women were starng to decline as well. Trying to reach the minimum of 20 required pilgrims seemed to be beyond our reach at mes. We have had to cancel several Men s walks the last several years. Our 2014 fall walks were slow to fill and went down to the wire to receive and exceed the necessary 20 pilgrims. We had solid walks with 21 Men and 29 Women a-ending. This year s spring walks took a while and again we struggled to receive the 20 required by the deadline, but the Lord is Good and we were blessed abundantly! Our men s walk went to camp with 29 Pilgrims and the Women had a completely full walk at 36. Praise The Lord! We had couples a-ending who were engaged, just married, and one having been married almost 50 years. We even had a mother who was sponsored by her 18 year old son who was a Bu-erfly from our Chrysalis Community. Dates for Upcoming Walks & Flights Chrysalis Flights #57 & #58 Application Deadline Men s Walk #97 Application Deadline Women s Walk #98 Application Deadline September 5-7 August 28 October 15-18 September 15 October 22-25 September 22 The men had Pilgrims and a team member that represented three generaons: grandfather, father and grandson. The women had two sets of mothers and daughters, which included the mother and sister to the three generaons on the Men s Walk. It was so excing to see lives being changed and hear the tesmonies at Closing. I look forward to what the Lord is going to do through The Walk to Emmaus in the lives of these 65 Pilgrims, as well as the Churches and communies in the Columbus Area they represent. Connued on page 2

Connued from page 1 PAGE 2 I ask you each to begin praying now for how you can get involved in the Fall Flights/Walks. Does the Lord want you to serve on a team? Does He have someone you are supposed to sponsor? Does he want you to sign up to be a Prayer Partner? Make Agape? Help set up the Camps? Sign the 72 Hr Prayer Chart? Clean up the Camp at the end of the Flights/ Walk? As you can see, it takes many hands and prayers to have successful Flights and Walks. Please contact me or an Emmaus or Chrysalis Board Member if you have quesons or if you want to serve in any way. Chrysalis Flight is Sept 5-7 (Labor Day Weekend) with Evan & Emma Guse as Lay Directors Men s Walk 97 is October 15-18 with Mark Kelly as Lay Director Women s Walk 98 is October 22-25 with Debbie Frey as Lay Director If you Sponsored a Pilgrim on Walk 95 or 96, please remember to bring them to the 4 th day meeng on May 15 th at 6 pm. It will help them get involved in our community and learn about Reunion Groups and Sponsorship. DeColores! Mary Miles, Emmaus Community Lay Director MEN S WALK #95 REPORT Walk # 95 in many ways could be described in one word AWESOME! We had 29 pilgrims who came with a spirit of surrender; a mind open to hear what was given to them in the talks and seeing what God had in store for them on this 72 hour journey. As I shared in my communicaon with the community for the Candlelight service, it was excing to see how God had blessed this walk. The Table of Concern could see very quickly that the pilgrims where outgoing, responsive and as importantly, obedient to our requests. They were involved quickly in their parcipaon on the first talk they quickly moved from the discussion period to creang posters and skits. The Table Leaders confirmed how amazed they were at how quickly the pilgrims started to get the key points from the talks. The creaveness and the depth of understanding were there they were on the fast track of understanding where God was leading them on their Walk to Emmaus. As for many who have parcipated in the Walk to Emmaus, there are those moments of humility, prayer and submission. Both the Pilgrims and the team experienced this during our me of reflecon with the Clowns and the confession me during Dying Moments. As private as our sin may be, James called us to confess our sins to each other and pray for each other so you may be healed. This was a moving me, not only for the Pilgrims, but also for the team members who parcipated. All pilgrims and team members who parcipated received the generosity of God s grace arraigned by God for our benefit. As always, the Candlelight Service is the most uplijing me for the Pilgrims. To see so many friends and loved ones from the Emmaus Community being there to celebrate their love for the pilgrims is an emoonal me. Many of the Pilgrims shared with their table leaders and members of the team, how much they realized the Love of Christ by seeing so many people there to share God s love with them. I can truthfully say for me this is the Connued on page 3

Connued from page 2 PAGE 3 meaning of the words of the song Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord I want to see you! The Pilgrims saw God s love being expressed for them through all that were there to show God s love to them. The final day of the Walk is the most challenging you have five more talks to get presented and the pilgrims are emoonally and physically drained. At this point they are ancipang the end of their journey. The Talks on Perseverance and Fourth Day will become more important to them when they have me to reflect on their Fourth Day, but at this moment, the le-ers of praise and love from family and friends are overwhelming. God s love for them is never more evident at this me of their journey God loves them and so do so many others! The Commissioning Ceremony as always was a special me. We shared with them God was calling them to service by receiving the Cross and accepng their responsibility in ministry of love in the name of Jesus Christ. This is always a special me when the team displays their cross and congratulates the Pilgrims in discerning their journey with God during this weekend of reflecon, study and prayer. Then the Closing this is the culminaon of the 72 hour journey for the Pilgrims; a me when you might measure the success of the Walk by the tesmonies given by them to the community gathered for this poron of the walk. The tesmonies given by the Pilgrims were both reflecve and humorous. But more importantly, there was a sincere commitment to serving God, being a be-er husband and father, and serving their church. Their tesmonies expressed a commitment to serving the Lord and the world by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. I have just read a statement this weekend by Mathew Henry, a 17 th century preacher who summed it up best with this statement, A life spent in service of God and in communion with him is the most pleasant life that anyone can live in the world. We hope and pray that Walk #95 has been a journey to help these men experience this kind of life as they connue their walk with God. I close this communicaon with the understanding that God is the origin and cause of all things. The apostle Paul stated it this way: For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. -Romans 11:36 (NIV) RespecOully submi-ed, Phil Newton, Lay Director - Walk #95 Columbus Indiana Area Emmaus Community, Inc. www.columbusinemmaus.org Emmaus Information Page (for community members): www.columbusinemmaus.org/emmaus/members User name: columbusemmaus password: 4thday

Dear Emmaus Community, WOMEN S WALK #96 REPORT PAGE 4 What an amazing experience it has been to be the Lay Director of Walk #96! God has been so faithful and good even though there were many obstacles! I would like to thank the Board and the Emmaus community for the opportunity to lead the team this spring. It was awesome to see God put team #96 together! I have said that it felt like God was in an inner tube in a lazy river with me in the inner tube behind Him gliding along in the water as I was calling people for team! I definitely felt God s prompng on who He wanted to have on team. Everyone on team was supporve. They were hard workers who shared God s love with the Pilgrims as well as everyone on team! Walk #96 was truly amazing! God s presence was felt by the Pilgrims as well as the team on that beauful spring weekend. I have received le-ers and emails from some of the Pilgrims who shared that they were blessed and they said that it was life changing for them! Thank you, Jesus! Thank you so much again for this opportunity to be the Lay Director of Walk #96! May God connue to bless those who a-ended Walk #96 and the Columbus Area Emmaus Community! Emmaus has been such a blessing to me and has helped strengthen my relaonship with Christ! I know my life has been enriched by the love and friendships that have developed over the years with my fellow Emmaus friends! I would not be who I am without Christ and my Emmaus community!
