WORLD S LARGEST HEALTH CARE PROGRAM LAUNCHED In what could benefit over 100 million vulnerable and under-privileged families, the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on 1 February 2018 unveiled a new National Health Protection Scheme under which a health coverage of upto Rs 5 lakh per family will be offered for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. "This will be the world's largest government funded health care programme," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his televised address soon after Finance Minister's Budget speech. The government will also establish 1.5 lakh Health and Wellness Centres under the Ayushman Bharat program. The mega healthcare scheme announced in the Budget will entail an investment of Rs 10,000-Rs 12,000 crore and is likely to be launched on either August 15 or October 2, 2018. WHO ACKNOWLEDGES HIMACHAL DOCTOR'S LOW-COST TREATMENT FOR RABIES, CALLS IT REVOLUTIONARY A new protocol to treat rabid dog bite patients can prove to be a major breakthrough and even the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends it as one of the least expensive therapies in the world. It's a revolutionary treatment that drastically reduces the dose of medicine," said Omesh Kumar Bharti, a field epidemiologist with the Himachal Pradesh government. Besides, the cost of treatment would go down to just Rs 350 ($5.50) from the existing Rs 35,000 ($545) per patient. At present, over $1.6 billion is annually spent on the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis across the globe which is likely to come down to few million dollars. Around 59,000 persons die of rabies globally every year. Most of these deaths occur due to unaffordability and unavailability of the medicine. OLD MOSQUES IN INDIA In last edition, we informed readers about some of the oldest mosques in India. Some of those mosques were made within 10 years of birth of Islam. Mosques construction gained momentum in India after establishment of Islamic rule in North India in 13th century. In this edition, we present some of the old mosques of India which were built by Islamic rulers. Jama Masjid Shamsi, Budayun (1223) The Jama Masjit or Great Mosque was built in Budaun (Uttar Pradesh) by Iltutmish, the ruler of Delhi Sultanate from 1211 to 1236. This mosque reflects Persian and Afghan architecture. It has three gates: the main gate, facing Shakeel Road, is made up of red marble and stands 100 feet tall. The second gate is in Farshori Tola and the third one in Sotha. This mosque is the third oldest existing and second largest mosque of the country after Delhi's Jama Masjid, having a standard capacity of 23500. Before the expansion of Delhi's Jama Masjid, it was the largest and most famous mosque of the country. The central dome of the mosque is considered to be the largest for any dome of mosque in the country. It is also a Monument of National Importance and a National Heritage Site. 6

Adina Mosque ruins The ruins of Adina Mosque built in 1373 AD are located in Pandua of Maldah district, West Bengal, India. The mosque was built during the reign of Sikandar Shah, the second sultan of the Ilyas Shahi dynasty in the Bengal Sultanate. The mosque was designed to project the kingdom's imperial ambitions after its two victories against the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century. Inscriptions on the mosque proclaimed Sikandar Shah as "the exalted Sultan" and the "Caliph of the faithful". The mosque was located in the now ruined city of Pandua, a former capital of the Bengal Sultanate. It fell into ruin during the period of British rule and was damaged by earthquakes in the 19th century. \ Jama Masjid, Srinagar Jama Masjid Mosque is situated in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. It was built by Sultan Sikandar shah in 1394 AD. Later, the son of Sultan Sikandar, Zain-ul-Abidin got the mosque extended the mosque. The Jama Masjid has majestic courtyard and 378 wooden Deodar pillars supporting wooden ceiling with 346 pillars of 21 feet in height and 5 feet in girth and 32 pillars with 48 feet in height and 6 feet in girth. The masjid has a fountain also measurement of 33 feet by 34 feet which is also used for wadju (ablution). It got ruined thrice in fire and was reconstructed every time. The last restoration was carried out during the reign of Maharaja Pratap Singh. 7

Atala Masjid, Jaunpur The Atala Masjid in Jaunpur was built by Sultan Ibrahim (1402 1436), Sharqi Sultan of Jaunpur. Construction started in 1377 and was completed in 1408. Being the first mosque to be built after the independence of Jaunpur from the Islamic caliphate in India, the Atala Mosque was given royal treatment setting up a new monumentality to the traditional mosques. The majestic pylons of the portal of its main prayer room, the three unequal domes above its roof and the large court with its two storey porticoes, all expressed a new grandeur never seen before, adding more mystery to the skill and imagination of the medieval Muslim architect.
