F M M G. J. B MG -L W M? Y! Y! Did you ever wish that you could preach a homily or sermon? erhaps this weekend is short notice, but how about next week? d love to! Just this once! d tell em a thing a two! Bet ll do it better than he can, and in less time, too! - and you may be right! Gee, m kind of rusty; it s been a while; better ask someone else. m ashamed of some things in my life... d feel like a hypouite preaching to other people. f you were to preach, do you have an attention grabbing story to begin with? ow about a leave em wanting more ending? Would you speak off the cuff, use an outline, write out a text? ow about a Big alphie story? ow beginning with a rapt attention story, ending with a show-stopper each of them as close to one another as possible!!! Who do others say that am? Jesus first question is easier; one can simply repeat someone else s words, recount what someone else is thinking, quote a poll or two, parrot conventional wisdom. But that question, and its reply, has a down-side - thinking that discipleship is someone else s responsibility, finding ourselves a bit relieved that we seem to be off the hook. o wonder then, Jesus second, more indirect, in-your-face question: nd you! Who do you say that am? o hiding from that one! o excuses! o mumbled reluctance! nd so, When we have a chance to stand for what we believe, a moment to put aside the verybody does it that defines morality, an opportunity to uphold the sanctity of human life or affirm the dignity of every person, Who do you say that am? When other kids or teens taunt someone who is different, who doesn t fit in, when the bully gets laughs for cruelty - when someone who enjoys poor health describes every ache in vivid detail, when that bragger of deeds real or imagined, says Got a minute? - Who do you say that am? When Mass becomes un-important, an unwelcome chore on weekends that too easily get too frenetic, when we believe ucharist to be only a symbolic representation of Jesus true, real acramental presence, Who do you say that am? When we think onfession passe, depriving ourselves of that wonderful moment of healing, forgiveness and conversion, when Why should? God forgives me. (and e does!) is our excuse, Who do you say that am? When peer pressure seems to overwhelm us, when You don t really believe that stuff any more, do you?, when he store will never miss it; besides, they charge too much for the stuff, anyway, Who do you say that am? When m not hurting anyone; who will know the diference? brings smut on-line, or finds us on a Facebook page or in hat oom that is surely poisonous, Who do you say that am? When we have an opportunity to write a projife letter or -mail a legislator or a member of ongress, when we defend religious freedom at the ballot box, when tuition tax credits remain a false and failed promise for public and private school families alike, when we content ourselves with abysmal turn-outs for elections, Who do you say that am? Do you have a copy of he atechism of the atholic hurch? ubscribe to a atholic newspaper or magazine? ow about visiting a atholic web-site to learn more about your faith? s was confirmed; what else do have to learn? able to sustain your adult faith, or help you think through contemporary moral isstues? Who do you say that am? nd you! Who do you say that am? Be ready for the question! Be proud of your answer! t s your chance to preach! By what we say, and by what we do! Who? Me? Yes! You! Blessings galore! 2 WY F DY DY M MB MB 13, 2015
