1 2 3 4 1 Nephi 14:1 The stumbling block spoken of by the angel appeared to be of two types: (1) the ignorance and uncertainty which came as a result of the loss of the plain and precious truths from the Bible; and (2) the Book of Mormon and the message of the Restoration themselves which would serve as stumbling blocks to the impenitent and hard-hearted of the latter days. In the meridian of time Paul wrote: We preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness (1 Corinthians 1:23). Millet & McConkie, BOM Commentary, Vol. 1, p. 106 1 Nephi 14:2 No More Captivity The land of promise was to be a land wherein the promises made to the fathers the promise of land inheritance, of the gospel, of the priesthood, and of eternal life (see Abraham 2:8-11, 19) were to be realized by the faithful. If the people of the Americas would but worship the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ, they would never again know captivity and servitude and slavery. Nor would they be led captive by that devil who subtly seeks to enshroud the unwary in the sleep of death. (See 2 Nephi 1:7; 10:10-12; Ether 2:9-12.) Ibid, p. 107 No More Confounded With the restoration of things plain and precious, Israel need no more be scattered or confounded. The Book of Mormon in particular is the instrument prepared by God to bring about the gathering of Israel in the last days in two ways: (1) it provides a description of Israel s condition the causes for the scattering as well as the means whereby she is to be gathered; and (2) it provides the specific prescription for accomplishing the task of gathering namely, through the Book of Mormon itself. In short, t he Book of Mormon is the scriptural record ordained to accomplish the Father s work (3 Nephi 21) because it is the familiar voice, a voice from the dust which will call Israel home. Ibid p. 107 1 Nephi 14:3 That great pit shall be filled Those who robbed the scriptures of much of their glorious light shall yet be left to walk in darkness themselves. In seeking dominion over the souls of others, they have enslaved themselves to a more devilish master. Not the destruction of the soul With few exceptions (e.g., 2 Nephi 9:13; D&C 88:15), the word soul, as used in scripture, refers to the spirit of man, that premortal self which is literally a son or daughter of God the Father. There is no destruction of the soul, no final dissolution of the spirit; the spirit of man is composed of that pure and fine substance (intelligence) which can neither be created nor destroyed (see D&C 93:29; Teachings, pp. 352-54). That hell which hath no end Hell is that portion of the postmortal spirit world wherein the wicked suffer and repent and reconsider. It is also known as outer darkness, a place of weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, this because of the wickedness of those who have suffered themselves to be led captive by Lucifer (see Alma 40:13-14). The lake of fire and brimstone, whose flames ascend up forever and ever, is descriptive of the torment of conscience in this place (see Teachings, pp. 310-11, 357). Both paradise and hell have an end in the Resurrection. Hell is the gateway to the telestial kingdom. It is endless in the sense that those who experience it are subject to the punishment of God, Page 1 of 5

whose name is Endless (D&C 19:10-12). An endless hell, meaning literally a never-ending torment, is reserved exclusively for the sons of perdition, those who inherit "outer darkness" in and after the resurrection (D&C 76:44-48). Ibid, p. 107-108 5 6 7 8 1 Nephi 14:7 A work which shall be everlasting The new and everlasting covenant is the fullness of the gospel, the aggregate of all covenants and obligations which lead to salvation (see D&C 1:22; 39:11; 45:9, 49:9; 66:2; 133:57; Doctrines of Salvation 1:156). The gospel is the everlasting covenant because it is ordained by him who is Everlasting and also because it is everlastingly the same. In all past ages salvation was gained by adherence to its terms and conditions, and that same compliance will bring the same reward in all future ages. Each time this everlasting covenant is revealed it is new to those of that dispensation. Hence the gospel is the new and everlasting covenant. (Mormon Doctrine, pp. 529-30; italics in original.) The angel instructed Nephi that one accepts or rejects the message of the Restoration at the peril of his own salvation. Ibid, p. 108 1 Nephi 14:10 The church of the devil is the world; it is all the carnality and evil to which fallen man is heir; it is every unholy and wicked practice; it is every false religion, every supposed system of salvation which does not actually save and exalt man in the highest heaven of the celestial world. It is every church except the true church, whether parading under a Christian or a pagan banner. Bruce R. McConkie, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, 3:551 Joseph Smith: If God had a Church it would not be split up into factions, and that if He taught one society to worship one way, and administer in one set of ordinances, He would not teach another, principles which were diametrically opposed (HC 4:536). There is no more self-evident truth in this world, there is nothing in all eternity more obvious than that there is and can be only one true Church. A true Church does not create itself any more than man creates God, or resurrects himself, or establishes for himself a celestial heaven. All churches may be false, but only one can be true, simply because religion comes from God, and God is not the author of confusion. Doctrinal New Testament Commentary 2:506-7 Elder Bruce R. McConkie has written: There is only light and darkness; there is no dusky twilight zone [in regard to the fullness of salvation]. Either men walk in the light or they cannot be saved. Anything less than salvation is not salvation. It may be better to walk in the twilight or to glimpse the first few rays of a distant dawn than to be enveloped in total darkness, but salvation itself is only for those who step forth into the blazing light of the noonday sun. The Millennial Messiah, p. 54 The Great & Abominable Church 9 Shortly after the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Elder John Taylor wrote of the great organization John had described in Revelation 13, 17, and 18. It will readily be perceived in the foregoing extract that John had no more reference to the Roman Catholic, and Protestant churches, who had a form of godliness, denying the power, than he had to all Babylon from Nimrod down. The old woman, Satan's wife, was "drunk with the blood of the Saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus," and the Page 2 of 5

account actually includes all, whose "names were not written in the book of life, from the foundation of the world." Babylon, literally understood, is the gay world; spiritual wickedness, the golden city, and the glory of the world. The priests of Egypt, who received a portion gratis from Pharaoh, the priests of Baal, and the Pharisees, and Sadducees, with their "long robes," among the Jews are equally included in their mother's family, with the Roman Catholics, Protestants, and all that have not had the keys of the kingdom and power thereof, according to the ordinances of God. Elder James E. Talmage developed this idea: I do not understand that when the Lord states that those churches shall be overthrown-i mean the church of the devil, using his expression as he says-i do not understand that all members of those churches are to meet destruction, physically or otherwise. He is speaking there of the church collectively, and he is not pleased with it; but individually he may be well pleased with many of his sons and the daughters who have been born under an environment that has led them into those churches which are not of God.... But the Lord is not pleased with those churches that have been constructed by men and then labeled with his name. He is not pleased with those doctrines that are being taught as being his doctrines when they are only the effusion of men's brains, undirected by inspiration and utterly lacking in revelation. President Ezra Taft Benson said: In 1845, the Quorum of the Twelve issued an epistle to the heads of state in the world. I quote from one paragraph: "As this work progresses in its onward course, and becomes more and more an object of political and religious interest and excitement, no kin, ruler, or subject, no community or individual, will stand neutral. All will at length be influenced by one spirit or the other; and will take sides either for or against the kingdom of God." (James R. Clark, comp. Messages of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6 vols. [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1965-75], 1:257.) That day is now here. Opposition has been and will be the lot of the Saints of the kingdom in any age. The finger of scorn has been pointed at us in the past, and we may expect it in the future. We also expect to see men in high places defend the Church; there will also be "pharaohs" who know neither Joseph nor his brethren. The seed planted and watered in 1830 has now matured to a fully grown tree for all to see. Some will seek the refuge of its shade in the heat of the day, but none will be neutral in their appraisal of its fruit. The Church will continue its opposition to error, falsehood, and immorality. The mission of the Church is to herald the message of salvation and make unmistakably clear the pathway to exaltation. Our mission is to prepare a people for the coming of the Lord. As the world drifts further away from God and standards of virtue and honor, we may expect opposition to the work of the Church. We may expect to see the time, as the Book of Mormon forecasts, when "multitudes... among all the nations of the Gentiles [will gather] to fight against the Lamb of God." (1 Ne. 14:13.) The power of God and the righteousness of the Saints will be the means by which the Church will be spared. (See 1 Ne. 14:14-15.) Kent P. Jackson, ed., Studies in Scripture, Vol. 7: 1 Nephi to Alma 29, p.55-57 10 11 1 Nephi 14:13 Our persecutions and difficulties have scarcely begun, wrote Elder Bruce McConkie. We saw mobbings and murders and martyrdom as the foundations of the work were laid in the United States. Those same things with greater intensity, shall yet fall upon the faithful in all nations. The Millennial Messiah, p. 55 1 Nephi 14:13-14 A Final Battle President Hugh B. Brown spoke of the final battle between Satan and his followers and the followers of God: I hope that every young man under the sound of my voice will resolve tonight, I am going to keep myself clean. I am going to serve the Lord. I am going to prepare every way I can for future service, because I want to be prepared when the final battle shall come. And some of you young men are going to engage in that battle. Some of you are going to engage in the final testing time, which is coming and which is closer to us than we know. In Conference Report, October 1967, p. 115 Page 3 of 5

12 13 14 15 16 Armed with Righteousness To be armed with righteousness is to be armed with the power of God and to be worthy of the Lord s protecting care. The Lord has made it clear that those who will be safe in the last days are those who have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide (D&C 45:57). President Harold B. Lee taught: By faith in God you can be attuned to the Infinite and by power and wisdom obtained from your Heavenly Father harness the powers of the universe to serve you in your hour of need in the solution of problems too great for your human strength or intelligence (Church News, 15 Aug. 1970, p. 2). With the power of the priesthood, faith, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Saints of the last days will be armed sufficiently to withstand all opposition. Student Manual, Religion 121-122, p. 14 1 Nephi 14:23 Joseph Smith said: The book of Revelation is one of the plainest books God ever caused to be written (Teachings, p. 290). Such, however, is seldom the consensus today of those of the household of faith who seek to extract meaning from the book. Not only is John s apocalyptic style (with numbers, beasts, plagues, demons, angels, and astral phenomena) difficult for us to comprehend, but, as Nephi s guide explains, the book of Revelation has been subject to the same scriptural conspiracy as the rest of the canon; the corruption of the text through planned and intended removal of precious parts has rendered John s work a sealed book at best to the religious world. If indeed the book was easy to the understanding of all men before the removal of certain parts, one can but imagine how vital and significant those things removed must have been! Millet and McConkie, BOM Commentary, Vol. 1. p. 114 1 Nephi 14:26 This seems to be a specific reference to the vision had by the brother of Jared and the record made and sealed up by him (see Ether 3:22-27). When the day comes no doubt it will be millennial that the people of the earth rend the veil of unbelief that covers the hearts and minds of even many of the faithful, then shall the panoramic vision given to Nephi, as well as those given to Adam, Enoch, Noah, Mahonri Moriancumer, Abraham, Moses, Joseph Smith, and others, be opened to all the obedient (2 Nephi 27:10-11; Ether 4:6-7, 15). Ibid, p. 115 1 Nephi 14:28 I could explain a hundred fold more than I ever have of the glories of the kingdoms manifested to me in vision, were I permitted, Joseph Smith stated, and were the people prepared to receive them. Teachings, p. 305 1 Nephi 14:30 Bruce R. McConkie said, We have not received, by any means, all of the word of the Lord. I think we have received most of the word of the Lord that is required until the Second Coming. The Lord has given all that people in the world have the spiritual capacity to receive at this time. There is going to be another great dispensation, that is, another great period of enlightenment, when he comes; and at that time he will reveal all things, such as the sealed portion of the Book of Mormon. But he will not reveal the sealed portion of the Book of Mormon now, and let us publish it to the world, because what it contains is so far beyond the spiritual capacity of men that it would drive people away from the truth rather than lead them to the truth. Actually, it is an act of mercy for the Lord to limit, to a particular people, the amount of revelation they receive.
