Volume 35, Number 2 March 2016 Praying It doesn't have to be the blue iris, it could be weeds in a vacant lot, or a few small stones; just pay attention, then patch A few words together and don't try to make them elaborate, this isn't a contest but the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak. ~ Mary Oliver, Thirs

Calling the Youth Music Ensemble: The Youth Music Ensemble is getting together again to learn a great song called Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah, Praise ye the Lord! You can find it on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pbnbkk2ja0 Some of you may remember that we sang this during Vacation Bible School. Now, let's get together and practice so that we sound really good on March 20 th Palm Sunday. We will be meeting after Worship on March 6 and 13 th. Feel free to bring your instrument as long as you can carry it and sing during the processional on Palm Sunday. Everyone is welcome so invite your friends. Hope to see all of you there! Max Vladimiroff Deacons News A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in and helped to organize the Deacons Annual Variety Show on January 23 rd. What a fun and wonderful evening so much talent! The Deacons are delighted to welcome three new additions to the Board: Kayla Downs, Anne Fries and Tammy Thomas and to welcome back for a second term Granville Reed and John Sutor. We bid farewell (for now) to Megan Christian who has served for six years as a Deacon; we re so grateful for all her hard work over the years. A new flock list has been created and is posted on the Narthex bulletin board. Please feel free to contact your Deacon if you need help, have questions or want to share a special joy. If you don t know who your Deacon is, please check out the list or ask any Deacon. We look forward to serving you!

Finance and Stewardship Although we expect 2016 to be a challenging year from a financial perspective, I am pleased to report that we have started the year on a strong note. Pledge income in January was more than twice the monthly budgeted amount due to early payments of several donors. There were no unusual expenses in January, so we ended the month with a nice surplus. Feel free to contact me or Terri Flanagan if you have any questions about our budget or projections for the year. Thanks for all you do to help make Valley the wonderful church that it is. Jeff Henriques, Treasurer

Mission - March 2016 Coming up this month is our One Great Hour of Sharing collection. It is a collection that encompasses many denominations. In ours, the collection is divided among three Missions: Presbyterian Hunger Project, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and Self Development of People. Each receives 32% of the amount received with the extra 4% given to Presbyterian Hunger Project to address the issue of homelessness. We will receive the offerings on Palm Sunday (March 20th) AND Easter (March 27th). Also during March, we begin our co-sponsorship of a refugee family (through IRIS Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services) with the Congregational Church of Brookfield. The Congregational Church is receiving its sixth family and has all the committee chairs and many of the committees already in place. Valley is the junior partner, and we will fill in the committees, etc. as needed. There are all kinds of ways in which you can volunteer. Please contact Judy Cunningham if you are willing to volunteer. The most needed areas are finance and transportation. Also more work is needed on the cottage on the Congregational Church s property; this includes furnishing it and providing clothing and household items once the size of the family is determined. However, in order for this family to be assigned, we need to conduct training sessions (which we can also use as information sessions). Training will consist of: overview of ministry, overview of each committee with committee breakouts (if possible) and scenarios to consider, etc. Volunteers have the choice of attending either of the sessions: Sunday, March 6TH at Noon at Valley, or Thursday, March 10 TH at The Congregational Church of Brookfield at 7 P.M. This is a new, exciting opportunity for us. Jesus said: As you have done it unto the least of these, you have done it unto me. Finally, let me thank you on behalf of the committee for all the food items and monetary donations on Souper Bowl Sunday. The food and a check will be delivered to the New Milford Food Bank. Thanks also go to the Mission Committee for all the work on the preparation of the souper bowl food coffee hour. Dorothy Day Sandwich making for March is the 27th (Easter Sunday). Judy Cunningham, Chair

Notes from The Director of Family Ministries My first order of business is to THANK all those who helped with our exciting Valentine's Parents' Night out. Betsy Birdsall, Lynn and Colin Harrison, Kate and Jeff Henriques, Linda and Heather Cochrane, Mike Downs, Jared Christian, Sandy Zuvanich, Angel Pai, and all the Chasm youth that volunteered their Saturday night. Thank you so very much! We had over 35 children and many happy parents with an evening free to celebrate the holiday together. Their children were kept busy with tons of activities and yummy food to eat. This was a community service as well as a fund raiser for our Youth Group CHASM. We were able to make $160 dollars for the group to use in their future endeavors. Saturday, March 19 (3:00pm-4:00pm): Easter Egg Filling Extravaganza. Come help us fill Easter Eggs for Valley's Easter Egg Hunt the following Wednesday. We will sit comfortably, chat, and fill MANY eggs with yummy candy and scriptures. Many hands make light work, and I promise there are no glow sticks in sight this year! :) If you are unable to come and fill eggs, maybe you'd like donate plastic eggs and or candy to the event. Be sure candy is pre-wrapped. These donations may be dropped off anytime in the church kitchen. Thank you! Wednesday, March 23 (5:00pm-6:30pm) Easter Egg Hunt. As children there are few things more exciting than an Easter egg hunt. The thrill of the hunt, the excitement of finding the fun filled colorful eggs, the fellowship of being with friends and family. Join us the Wednesday before Easter. (The egg was a symbol of the rebirth of the earth in pre-christian celebrations of spring. However, the Easter egg itself was defined by early Christians as an Easter symbol of the resurrection of Jesus: the egg symbol was likened to the tomb from which Christ arose.).be sure to bring your Easter baskets! If you would like to assist with this event I will be needing help hiding eggs and traffic flow directors to ensure the safety of the kiddos.

Service Auction: There are several things that should be on your calendars for the upcoming months. Please be sure to let me know if you would like to scatter some sunshine and share a blessing for our 2016 Service Auction. We will be getting together Saturday, April 2 (6-8) to auction off our passions, hobbies, and God's gifts to share with our Valley families. I have several amazing things people have donated already, but I'm looking for more... fresh homemade dog biscuits 2 hour yard service pet sitting tangerine tart singing lessons piano lessons Won't you join in the fun? I am still hoping to hear from folks about future small group dinners. One of the central ways we can grow as disciples of Jesus is by having intentional relationships with people who share the same goal, and small groups are the ideal place for that. Valley's future small groups could be a great way to build relationships and develop true friendships. Be sure to let me know if you are interested in any way. I will be sure to take location into consideration when coordinating groups. Megan Christian Director of Family Ministries

Welcome Interested in learning more about Valley Presbyterian Church? Considering making Valley your faith home? Then join us after church on April 3rd, April 17th and April 24th to spend some time together. We will get to know one another a bit better; we ll talk about the mission and ministries of Valley, and explore how God might use your gifts to carry out the ministry of the church here in this place. To sign up or let us know of someone we should invite, contact Rev. Adele. We plan to welcome new members in worship on Pentecost, May 15th. We don t call this a New Member s Class for a very important reason: this is a time of exploration for you and your family to see if Valley is the right church for you. There is no pressure to join the church. We are here to help you prayerfully consider whether God is calling you to share the ministry of Valley Church at this time. We are an open and diverse community of faith, and there is a place for you here! Chapter & Verse Join us in the Choir Room from 1 to 2 pm each Wednesday in March as we share the ways Jesus impacts our lives and the lives of others. Led by Linda Cochrane, we will look at some of the specific texts that inform our daily living or bubble up for us when the going gets tough. All are welcome for a time of discussion and fellowship.
