1 Educational Initiatives at this year s Family Life Conference * BIBLE CHALLENGE Exploring the Gospel of Mark In preparation for the BIBLE CHALLENGE at this year s Family Life Conference, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel and the cooperation of our Department of Religious Education, we encourage an Episcopate-wide study of the GOSPEL OF MARK. Mark is the Gospel reading on many of the Sunday Divine Liturgies in Great Lent, and is considered to be the first written account of the life and message of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We encourage all parishes to study this text during this pre-lenten, Lenten, and Paschal season and then come to the Family Life Conference and compete in the BIBLE CHALLENGE. Study guides and practice questions are available at: www.orthodoxyouth.org/mark. ANY 3 people can form a BIBLE CHALLENGE team. (Mom, Dad, kids ) The winning team s parish will receive $1,000, donated by The Orthodox Brotherhood! For more information, contact: Teva Regule (teva@mit.edu) or Fr. Ian Pac-Urar (pacurar@zips.uakron.edu.) * ORATORICAL FESTIVAL Re-imagining my Church Family Staying connected and growing in the faith in our 20s Our Service to the Lord in Liturgy and Life These are the themes of the first Oratorical Contest of our Episcopate. We ve designed the contest so that youth and adults alike feel encouraged to think more deeply about our faith and to begin to articulate it to others. We plan to have 3 divisions with scholarship prize money available for the winners! Contestants should each build their essay using the resources of our faith the Bible, Liturgy, Ancient and Modern Church writings as well as their own experience. Oratories will be judged on theological content, coherence of thesis, and delivery. All contestants should submit the final version of their oratory in advance to the Chair by June 21, 2013. Chair: Ron Muresan (ronmuresan@hotmail.com)

2 Oratorical Festival (continued): Teen/Jr. AROY division (12 18 yrs.) Theme: Re-imagining my Church Family: Who is my Family and What does this mean to me? Study the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25 37) and apply it to your life today. Oratories should be 4 7 minutes in length. Young Adult/Sr. AROY division (19 30yrs.) Theme: Staying Connected and Growing in the Faith in our 20s: Challenges and Opportunities The experiences and decisions of early adulthood often set the foundation for a large part of the rest of our adult lives. Explore the challenges and opportunities of connecting and growing in the faith during this time in our lives from the resources of our faith. Topics may include experiences of the college years, first jobs, relocating to a new city, marriage and/or first serious relationship. Oratories should be 5 8 minutes in length. Adult division (31+ yrs.) Theme: Our Service to the Lord: In Liturgy and Life The theme of our conference is With Faith and Love, Draw Near. These are the words of invitation to receive and become more fully the Body of Christ. As members of the Church, we are called to gather as the Body of Christ, enlivened by the Holy Spirit and become a light for the entire world. We do this when two or three are gathered in His name. In the Liturgy, we offer ourselves and the work of our hands in the form of bread and wine which we receive back as the Body and Blood of Christ so that we may participate in His Life. After the Liturgy, we are all called, to continue this work day by day, for the continuing sanctification of the whole world. Explore and connect some of the challenges and opportunities of service in liturgy and life. What are the implications of this work for strengthening the entire Church, our local parish, and/or our own relationship with God? Oratories should be 7 10 minutes in length. * Church School Teacher Workshops Calling all Church School Teachers and Parents We encourage each parish to send at least one Church School Teacher to this year s conference. The conference will include a number of workshops especially designed for Church School Teachers (and parents) to share their experiences of teaching our faith and develop new ways of doing so. Come and meet others who are engaged in this ministry and bring back new ideas for your parish!

1 2013 AROY Cotillion Ball Debutante Information This year, like many in the past, the Auxiliaries of the church would like to celebrate the turning point or coming of age of our church youth with a debutante ball. In the past, this event was held during the American Romanian Orthodox Youth (A.R.O.Y.) Conference. This year we are starting a new tradition with all the Auxiliaries of the church joining together as a church family to welcome both the boys as escorts and the girls as debutantes into this new age. During this event, there is a formal presentation where each escort will first escort the mother of the debutante. At that time the mother and escort will be introduced. The Master of Ceremonies will also share some information about the escort, including his high school involvement, plans after high school graduation, along with his church and spiritual involvement. The debutante will then be presented with her father or another male family member. Like the escort, the debutante will be introduced and her information will be shared as well. Following the formal presentation, we will spend the evening as a church family dancing, sharing memories, and creating new ones. Information you need to know: The Debutante: You must be an active member of the Orthodox Church, age 15-19. The Dress: A floor length white ball gown. Your shoulders must be covered for the presentation. Your Escort: You may choose an escort yourself from among your male friends and family OR the planning committee will find an escort for you. **We ask that you choose someone who has not been an escort more than once before to allow for different young men to have the opportunity to escort the young ladies of our church. The escort MUST be a practicing Orthodox Christian between the ages of 15 and 19.** Your Hair: You will have the opportunity to get your hair done at the Vatra by a professional stylist at a discounted rate. Photos: Formal photos will be taken prior to presentation. Formal pictures will include photos of the debutante alone, with her family, with her escort, and a group photo. Attendance: Your attendance is requested throughout the entire Family Life Conference. There will be many events in which the debutantes AND escorts will be presented and introduced. You will be provided with a complimentary conference registration package deal, including tickets to all events and nametags clearly identifying you as a debutante. A full schedule for the debutantes will be given out at a later date. Some of the events the debutantes and escorts will be asked to attend include: AROY events such as AROY field day, AROY bonfire, and AROY workshops; a debutante luncheon (for debutantes, their parents, and escorts); and the Sunday banquet after Liturgy. ***It is expected that debutantes and escorts will be an example for their peers and will attend church services.*** Registration: To register, please fill out the form on the back of this sheet along with the following: A 5x7 photo of yourself. This must be clear enough to use in a display and/or formal program. A registration fee of $25.00 to confirm your spot as a debutante. (This fee will be waived if the debutante participates in the Oratorical Festival on Friday, July 5 th in the afternoon of the Family Life Conference.) An attached document with answers to the following questions: (1) Re-imagining my Church Family: Who is my Family and what does this mean to me? (This is also the question for the Oratorical Festival. Study the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25 37) and apply it to your life today.) (2) What has been the most influential/meaningful activity in which you have participated through the church and why? (3) How has your spiritual life helped you to become the person you are today? (4) Why is it important to stay active in the church past high school? And how will you stay active in your church in the years to come? (5) Random Questions: (a) What did you want to be when you were a kid? (b) If you had a million dollars, what charity would you donate to and why? (c) Favorite Bible verse REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MAY 31, 2013 For questions or more information: Please contact Cotillion Planning Members Jessica Precop (jprecop@gmail.com 734-776-0805) or Bethany Avramaut (bavramau@kent.edu 440-781-6188)
