THE SEASON OF LENT A TIME OF PRAYER, PENANCE, AND CHARITY This Wednesday we begin the season of Lent, a time when we return to a right relationship with God and neighbor. It is a time to take stock in our lives and a time to renew our practice of faith. We begin by coming together on Ash Wednesday to sign ourselves with the cross of ashes. Ashes will be given at Masses at St. Catherine Labouré at 12pm and 6:30pm and at the Service at St. Colman s at 5:30pm on Wednesday the 14 th. This day is also marked by fast and abstinence. We can increase our prayer life during these next forty days by daily reading of scripture, daily Mass, and activities like adoration and Stations of the Cross at St. Catherine Labouré. Stations of the Cross take place on Fridays immediately after Mass and again at 7pm with benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. Abstinence prohibits individuals from eating meat. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige throughout their entire life. Those not specifically obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in this discipline to the extent that they are able. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fasting requires that only one full meal be taken per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able. This is a SEASON OF PENANCE. Fasting is a great sign of this as well as eating less, remembering the needs of the poor, reducing sin in our lives and growing in grace. You can do this by using the sacrament of penance. The church still requires us to go to confession once a year and receive the Eucharist during the Easter season. Confessions are heard before and after every Mass or if seriously ill at home, call the rectory. YEAR END STATEMENTS are available in the back of the church for those who signed up. Remember your deceased relatives and friends in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass; remember their birthdays, anniversaries, and other special days. Also remember those who are sick by having Mass offered for their intentions. It is that time of year when inclement weather is upon us. Please remember we need your constant support during the winter months. It has been over a year since the merger of the Parishes of St. Catherine Labouré and St. Colman took place. During the next phase of the transition, we will be re-building the database of members for the Parish. This means that we will need to re-register each family and individual that is currently registered with either St. Catherine s or St. Colman's. Each person over the age of 21 will need to fill out a new registration form. Children under 21 are considered members under their parents registration. The new registration form will be available at the entrances of both churches near the bulletins or on our parish website in the section labeled Forms. The paper copy must be filled out and returned to the Parish office or placed on the tables next to the entrance at either church location. For the members of St. Colman's - if you filled out this form 4 years ago, please fill out only section A of the new form. Thank you. Should you have any questions, I may be reached at 845-382-1133.
