Repentance. First, the need to repent strikes at our pride, and people are full of pride (poor in spirit mourning for our sins).

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND CONVICTION OF SIN John 16:4-14 (ESV)

Once saved, always saved

Transcription:

Repentance 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord isn t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. If God is not willing that any should perish, then why is the broad path the one leading to destruction, why aren t more people being saved (Matthew 7:13-14: You can enter God s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it ). The greatest obstacle to the salvation of man is not that God has failed or that the sacrifice of Jesus is too weak to save us! The greatest obstacle to the salvation of man is the unreasonable stubbornness of the human will. Because people refuse to repent! It has been suggested that the Bible puts great emphasis on repentance because people find this the hardest one of God s commands to obey. Once people genuinely repent, they do not have a problem with the other commandments of God. However, repentance is so very hard, for at least two reasons. First, the need to repent strikes at our pride, and people are full of pride (poor in spirit mourning for our sins). Second, true repentance requires a change in our lifestyle, and we do not like to change. That s why most people find it hard to repent. Does it really matter? I. Repent or perish Luke 13:1 About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple. We cannot be sure who these Galileans were, but Christ s listeners evidently thought they had to be unusually evil to be killed in such a way - Luke 13:2-3: Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee? Jesus asked. Is that why they suffered? Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God. The Lord then used a second illustration to emphasize the same point Luke 13:4-5: And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem? No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too. The Holy Spirit wanted to make sure we did not miss the message: repent or perish! Repentance is an essential part of becoming a Christian and it is an essential part of remaining a faithful Christian. When Jesus gave the Great Commission, repentance was part of the message to be preached: Luke 24:47 repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations When the gospel began to be preached, sinners were told to repent: Acts 2:37-38: Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 1

Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. II. What is repentance Repentance means to turn from our wicked ways, to cast away all sin from our lives, to run from sin, to lay aside or get rid of sinful practices. It involves a complete switch of focus in our lives, from serving self to serving God. Repentance means to stop doing wrong, and start doing right! Isaiah 1:16-17: Wash yourselves and be clean! Get your sins out of my sight. Give up your evil ways. Learn to do good To truly repent you need to do two things: (1) Turn away from your sins; (2) Turn toward God. Repentance literally means to put off our old man of sin like taking off filthy clothes: Ezekiel 18:30-32: Repent, and turn from your sins. Don t let them destroy you! Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel? I don t want you to die, says the Sovereign Lord. Turn back and live! Ephesians 4:21-22: Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 2 Timothy 2:19 Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 1 Peter 2:1 - So get rid of all evil behavior James 1:21 - So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives III. Godly sorrow Repentance is not just being sorry I sinned. 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. Godly sorrow is grief which comes into our hearts because we know that we have trampled the great heart of God under our feet that we have mistreated and offended God! To have Godly sorrow means we have a contrite heart a broken heart! To be contrite does not mean feeling bad about sin, but feeling crushed under the weight of guilt for what we have done. It means we have a genuine disgust of our sin as well as a determination to do differently. To be contrite means that we take responsibility for our sins, and that we deeply repent of these sins with a broken heart. If we don t/can t heaven will never be our home! Sometimes people who claim to be sorry for their sins actually have the sorrow of the world - they are sorry they got caught or they feel sorry for themselves because they have to suffer the consequences of their actions. So they cry like a baby but just because a person cries or is experiencing regret does not mean they have repented (Esau in Hebrews 12:16-17). Paul said Godly sorrow produces repentance not that it is repentance, but that it produces repentance. Remember, when Peter preached on Pentecost, the Jews were convicted of their sins and were sorry they had crucified Jesus. Nevertheless, they were still told to repent. So no, sorrow for sins, by itself, is not repentance. 2

A change of life is another essential factor in the repentance process, but a change of life alone is not repentance. It is possible to reform and make changes in your life and not repent (alcoholics), but reforming by itself isn t true repentance. So if repentance is not just being sorry for sin and it is not just turning from doing wrong, then what is it? It s both! The best word that sums up repentance is surrender where you take everything you are, everything you have, and everything you will be in the future and give them to God! God, I am Yours! The Bible is crystal clear on this point, if we want to be saved, we must unconditionally surrender everything to God. Surrender requires man to place Jesus above family ties, friendships, financial gain, everything: Philippians 3:8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ Repentance is total surrender, not just in the way we think, but it includes it. Not just in the way we live, but it includes this as well. Repentance is a change of mind or attitude about sin that results in a change of lifestyle we stop the willful sinning. If a person truly repents, they will change. Our surrender to Jesus must be as complete as Paul s was our commitment to Jesus must be total. Psalm 37:5 - Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. To commit to God means to relinquish control, to give God the reins, to put all our eggs in His basket, to give God the passwords, the power of attorney, the driver s seat, and the keys. The temptation is to give to God a lease but not the deed. We want to hand over the keys but keep a spare set. We want to be co-pilots with Him. Jesus will have none of that. Jesus tells us that we can t get by on a just-get-by-religion. If we think we have just enough religion to save us from hell, we will find out we don t have enough to get us to heaven. A what is the least I can do and still go to heaven Christian will not make it to heaven. God will not accept a half-hearted, I checked all the boxes mentality or life-style. When you are more interested in getting by than getting right, you have not repented, and you are lost! Friends, Christianity never goes on sale! There is no bargain basement or discount outlet. It has one price - everything you have. It is either pay full price or go home empty-handed. God has always demanded first place or no place at all. He wants to be the first consideration in every decision and the final factor in all steps of life! IV. The issue When people have problems, counseling can be helpful, but problems cannot truly be solved until sin is dealt with. Sin is man s enemy because it separates God from man and man from man. Sin must be hated, repented of, and rejected. Sin is not a peripheral issue - it is the issue. Every spiritual problem is a sin problem. Every sin problem is a spiritual problem. Sin caused us to put ourselves on the throne - repentance causes us to put God back on the throne! 3

Most do not want to think/talk about their own sin. Many, in counseling, say, Don t try to make me feel guilty. I have enough trouble as it is. Many go to counseling to get fixed when their problem is their sin they have sinned, are sinning, and plan to keep on sinning. Sin cannot be fixed. Even God does not fix sin! Until sinners repent, problems cannot be totally solved. Counseling without salvation fails. The solution is repentance. If we are truly penitent, we will stop playing the It s ok, because game where we try to justify to ourselves why what we are doing is not a big deal. If you find yourself looking for loop-holes in the system, you haven t truly repented! How do you know when someone has truly repented? First, a penitent sinner makes no demands. Negotiation time is over. Copping out is past. Denial and making excuses are ancient history. The Blame Game is over. Second, there are clear visible changes taking place in their lives their new lives prove that they have repented. V. The church in America The church in America today is nearly powerless because its pews are filled with lukewarm halfhearted Christians who have never truly repented. The church is full of sin and people who are living sinful lives, people who are ok with doing what they think is just enough, people who have been deceived into believing that they are going to walk right in through those Pearly Gates and say I was just having a good time. These are people who are ok with going to church every now and then, and staying the same wimpy little Christians that they have always been. Churches every Sunday are literally filled with sinners who need to repent - the worldly, the greedy, the apathetic, the holier-than-thou s, the I m better than you s, the gossipers, the worriers, the profane, the immoral, the addicted, the hateful, the bitter, the mad, the proud, the stingy, the mean, the unforgiving, and the bossy! I tell you today there are people in this church dying and going to hell because they are doing it their way. All those not right with God, not right with others, not right with self need to repent! The word sin is not something that we like to talk about too much. We have struggles, we have strongholds, but very rarely do we say, I m living a life of sin. We may have dropped repentance from our vocabulary, but it is in the Bible 969 times. It was the last word of Jesus in Luke 24; it was the first word of Peter in Acts 2 (Pentecost). The final word of Jesus to the church was repent (Revelation 2-3). There is no telling what we could do in this community if it wasn t for our sin! It is time for true repentance! Friends, are you listening to God? Are you totally consecrated and committed to God, are you totally sold out, are you all in, are you in it to win it for you and your family. Are you doing it His way? Or are you doing it your way? VI. Conclusion God wants everyone to repent, because all have sinned, and the wages of sin is death. To encourage us to repent, God has used two principal motivations. First is the story of His goodness: Romans 2:4 Don t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin? 4

However, God also uses the sad truth of His wrath to try and bring men to repentance: Romans 2:5-6: But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God s righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge everyone according to what they have done. Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who calls out to me, Lord! Lord! will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. Heaven is a place that is prepared for people who are prepared so is hell. Right now, you are preparing for one or the other. Are you ready to go to heaven, or do you need to repent of sins in your heart and life? You may not realize it, but you are sitting in a dangerous spot today. You have been privileged to learn about the options Jesus gave repent or perish. If you fail to repent, if you perish, you will be without excuse. Do you understand what s at stake? Acts 17:30-31: God overlooked people s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead. 1 Peter 4:16-17: For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? Now If the righteous one is scarcely saved, where will the ungodly and the sinner appear? 5
