FR. STEELE S REFLECTION: Jesus woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Mark 4: 35-41 Underwater A mom and her eight-year-old son are staying at a Holiday Inn and were enjoying the heated pool, Kieran is happily gliding through the water like an otter, while Mom carefully wades in the shallow end. She has feared water since she was Kieran s age she couldn t trust her body to float; her anxious mind would not allow her to let go. When she would slip beneath the surface, she would breather in water and choke. So, over the years, she kept to the shore or pool edge. But, she also knew she was missing the freedom of swimming that so easily came to her friends, who leapt off docks and rode the ocean waves. Selfdoubt hardened into conviction. But today Kieran will not accept his mother s fear. They are the only two using the indoor pool this afternoon. Try to swim to me, Kieran says. Kieran had conquered a number of his own fears in his young life and today it s Mom s turn. The eight-year-old calmly and authoritatively coaxes her. It s not very far When I count to three, you start. OK? OK, she says. One, two, three. Go! But she doesn t move. Let s try it again, he says quietly with a confidence and maturity Mom has not heard in her son before. One, two, three! But she doesn t move. Let s try it again, he says quietly with a confidence and maturity Mom has not heard in her son before. One, two, three! After more false starts, Mom knows she must act. Mom tells the rest of the story: I suck in air, squeeze my eyes shut, and aim like a torpedo, into the murk. Beneath the surface, sound stops. I travel blind in this liquid world, surging forward, shoving water aside. I hold my breath until I cannot anymore. I burst up into the cool air. I don t see Kieran. I have glided right past him. I did it. I say unbelieving. Time slips off its track. Those childhood struggles, these minutes in the pool, the vision of my son s future the years swirl, bind to one another in new ways. My child has urged me past the old pain. Tears mix with the chlorinated dew on my smiling face. Kieran smiles too. Now, he says, try to go a little farther. I swim farther. I swim. [from Underwater by Kathleen Burge, The Boston Sunday Globe Magazine, April 19, 2015.] A mom finds new courage from her young son; an eight-yearold s overcoming his own fears inspires her to trust and discover a joy that fear alone has denied her. In our turbulent, whirlwind lives, we need to pay attention to the voice of Jesus speaking to us in the voices of encouragement and hope in our midst; we need to consciously call on the awakened Jesus to speak his word of wisdom and grace amid the roar of anger and mistrust that surrounds us. The voice of Jesus speaks to us in the encouragement and support of others calling us beyond the fears, misgivings and doubts that stop us from embracing life to the full, of realizing the grace of God s presence in our everyday lives, of daring to be the means of that grace for others. Grand Annual Appeal We continue to make major strides in donations to our Grand Annual Appeal. Anna E. Kelly Scholarship Fund Our fourteen high school recipients of the Anna E. Kelly Scholarship Fund Youth Ministry Awards have submitted thoughtful essays on their witness to Jesus Christ through their ministry to Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish community. We will share their inspirational words with you over the next several weeks. Sarah Cuffe Religious Education Sacred Heart University, Connecticut I have helped in many parish activities; pancake breakfast, St. Vincent de Paul clothing drive, and Bible Camp. During my days spent at the bible camp, I had a memorable time helping children gain knowledge about God while incorporating fun activities along the way. My favorite time however, has been teaching CCD. Religious Education has been an eye opening experience and has brought me closer to God while learning more about my faith. I started teaching in 9 th grade and have volunteered throughout my four years of High School. During my time teaching I have gained more knowledge about my religion and have learned the value of my faith, which is loyalty to God. I ve been able to pass my knowledge on to the younger generation and watch them grow each year. I have been able to engage them in activities relating to our faith and I have seen their knowledge and love increase as years moved on. I have learned that there is more to our faith than prayers and readings, but how to become a well rounded person and the importance of morals and values. I have had the great pleasure of being a part of a wonderful parish, and it has felt more like a family to me. Margaret Dever Religious Education Bates College During my high school years, I have been a CCD teacher for grades one and three. Additionally, I have been a volunteer counselor at Vacation Bible School for three years. Participating in these programs has allowed me both to teach about my faith but also learn about my faith. By teaching children about the Catholic faith, I have gained a new perspective on Christianity. By planning lessons and activities for CCD classes every week, I have learned new information about the saints and bible stories as well as ways to make these stories applicable to the everyday lives of my students. I have also gained a greater appreciation for teachers and the challenges they face in the classroom. Making sure every student was attentive and engaged in learning was a challenge. I m grateful for all that I have gained through sharing my faith as a part of the Star of the Sea religious education program and I am excited to continue to grow in my faith throughout college. Andrew Faria Altar Server Boston University My altar server career began all the way back in third grade. At the time, I really did not understand who God is or what Christianity really meant. I just liked the idea of being able to move around the altar. Moving around is frowned upon by those who sit in their pews, but it is an infectious disease in third graders. Altar serving was the perfect opportunity to fix that problem. However, above all, making a difference and helping others gave me great fulfillment and enthusiasm, even though I could not figure out why at the time. As I matured and my attention span grew, I began to figure out parts of my faith, which came as a result of my constant exposure to it as an altar server. I formed my identity of God and Jesus Christ because I was the closest listener to the priests and presenters. I saw meaning in the various offerings, song lyrics and rituals of our parish. They taught me of God s ways and how I can praise them in my life. Now, I could see God s importance and ubiquitous presence; I began to take honor in carrying the cross above my head every time I volunteered. It was important for me to not just accept my faith, but to act on it.
