FR. STEELE S REFLECTION: THE BLESSING AND PROCESSION OF PALMS: Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to [Jesus], Teacher, rebuke your disciples. He said in reply, I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out. Luke 19: 28-40 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD THE PASSION: The criminal said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Jesus replied, Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise... Luke 22: 14-23:56 The stones cry out... They never imagined that this would happen to their families. How could it, in their affluent neighborhoods and wellfunded schools? What did they miss? What could they have done? But it happened. Each of these families has buried a son or daughter who died of a heroin overdose. Now they have banded together in their grief to warn other families of the epidemic of heroin in their children s school and to mobilize medical and legislative resources to deal with the issue of easy-to-obtain hallucinogens and opiods among kids. These parents are the very voice of the stones crying out. Their church was shattered by the murders last June: a young white racist, welcomed into their Wednesday evening Bible Study, suddenly stood and opened fire, killing nine member of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The murderer sought to ignite a race war but the church and community responded with forgiveness and grace instead of anger and vengeance. They came together in the spirit of Jesus Gospel call for reconciliation and mercy. In their Christ-like response to the tragedy that struck their families and church, the stones cry out. They stand up for the invisible people, those pushed to the margins, those whose religion, culture and gender make them the scapegoats for a community s fears and anger. They work tirelessly and unceasingly and stubbornly to push back against the unjust laws and hateful rhetoric that condemn others to lives of endless poverty and dashed hopes. In their advocacy for the poor and displaced, the victimized and the forgotten, the stones cry out. This Palm Sunday invites us to walk with Jesus on the road to Calvary. But our Hosanna is not just a hymn happily sung at the beginning of the journey; our Hosanna is most beautifully intoned when we raise our voices in compassion, in advocacy for the poor, in the work of securing justice for all, in our selfless and generous efforts at reconciliation. May we enter this Holy Week with hearts open to hearing the stones crying out for justice and mercy in our own Jerusalem and our spirits impelling us to add our own voices to theirs. UPCOMING MEETING The Parish Finance Committee will meet on Monday, March 21 at 7:30 PM in the Rectory. Grand Annual Appeal We continue to make significant strides in donations to our Grand Annual Appeal. If you have not already given, we invite you to contribute to the Grand Annual which funds the major projects that maintain the beauty and magnificence of our church and the state-of-the-art quality of our parish facilities. Please help us to increase the donations to date as we move so close toward our Parish Goal of $190,000. We thank you sincerely for your generosity and continued support of Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish. Envelopes are available in Church pews & Church exits. Clergy Health and Retirement Trust Next week s Easter collection is for our priests. The Clergy Health and Retirement Trust cares for the health and well-being of our 614 active and senior priests in our Archdiocese, ensuring an appropriate level of care and quality of life for the men who have dedicated their lives in service to the Church of Boston. Our priests are there for us. Now, it is our turn to care for them. Please give generously to the collection next week using the envelopes that will be provided. You also can make your gift online at clergyfunds.org, or simply text PRIEST to 56512 (msg. & data rates may apply). Thank you in advance for your prayers and generous support of our priests. Holy Thursday s collection will support the Christian Service programs at Our Lady, Star of the Sea. Our parish has many successful programs that benefit our fellow human beings and guide us in corporal works of mercy. We appreciate your generosity in supporting these faith enriching programs. Good Friday s collection for the Holy Land is, in the words of Paul VI, not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities. COFFEE We will be gathering for coffee and donuts following the 9:00 AM this Sunday in the Parish Center. All are invited!

Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Luke 6-37 Several years ago I led the funeral services for a young man named Shawn. We all just loved this kid. Shawn was killed because one of his friends while driving made a bad mistake. Shawn s dad, Mike, is a giant of a man. Mike and I were talking in the back of church before the service began when the driver of the car that killed his son was wheeled in on a wheelchair. He had gotten released from the hospital to come to the funeral. Mike saw him, said, Just a minute, Father, and headed over to the young man. Mike towered over his wheelchair, and for a second I held my breath. Then I watched as Mike got down on his knees and held out his arms and hugged this sobbing young man, the one who drove the car that killed his son. Though Mike s heart was broken, he did not want also to carry bitterness or hatred there. As has been said, every hurt can either make us bitter or better. You and I? We all get hurt along the way. Is there some anger or hurt that you carry that instead of becoming bitter maybe today you could give it to God to help you let go? Even part of it? Merciful God, you understand the hurt in my heart. And you love me right where I am. In your love, you don t want me to become bitter. Please help heal and open my wounded heart. Kempf, Fr. Joe, The Joy of Mercy, Forgiving and Forgiven, (Fenton, MO: Creative Communications for the Parish, 2015), p. 15 We have launched the 2016 Catholic Appeal at Our Lady, Star of the Sea. We invite you to prayerfully consider making a generous gift. The Catholic appeal sustains over 50 ministries serving our parish and many people throughout the Archdiocese. These ministries support the hundreds of pastoral, charitable and educational programs here at Our Lady, Star of the Sea and across the Archdiocese. Through our support of the Catholic Appeal, we have the opportunity to join in the church s universal work of caring for those among us who are in need. Pledge envelopes are available in the pwes and at the Church exits. The pledge envelopes can be returned with the Offertory Collection. If you would like to make an online pledge, please visit www.bostoncatholicappeal.org. We thank you for your generous support of the 2016 Catholic Appeal.
