Purpose The purpose of this RE Intervention Booklet is to support you in achieving your target grade. Based on your grades / effort so far, we feel that you will benefit from additional guidance. This booklet is designed to give you additional tasks to complete at home to help your revision and preparation for the GCSE exams in May. The RE Intervention Booklet aims to reward students for improvement in effort / progress. We look forward to seeing your enthusiastic participation in this project. The RE Staff

How will it work? 1. One task will be set per 2 week cycle for you to complete at home (your teacher will pick tasks suitable for you so not necessarily in the order of this booklet) 2. You are responsible for looking after this booklet and bringing it to school to be checked 3. After each task is completed a parent / carer should sign the relevant page to show they have seen your work 4. Bring the booklet to school to show your RE teacher and they will check they are happy with the task you have completed 5. If your RE teacher is not happy with the task, ie. it is not completed, is rushed or the booklet is misplaced, you may be told to attend intervention sessions at school, which will be during lunchtimes or after school.

Task: Here s the answer, what s the question? One big mistake students make in the exams is to write an answer that is not relevant to the question. Even if you write something amazing, if it is not answering the question set you won t get any marks. See if you can work out the questions from the real answers written below by students who sat the exams previously. 1. (3 mark A02 question) I agree with the statement because religions preach peace and condemn violence. If all religious believers did campaign for peace it would make the world a happier place. 2. (4 mark A01 question) Some religious believers might have protest rallies outside factory farms. They might also do demonstrations live setting a factory farm on fire. Some religious believers promote animal rights by not eating meat. They might also refrain from wearing fur coats. 3. (4 mark A01 question) Some Christians believe that God created humans in his image (Genesis 1). So we are all equal and all are important to God. It is important for Christians to work for peace because Jesus said Blessed are the peacemakers. 4. (5 mark A01 question) Generally speaking, religious people are against abortion but many agree with the law in this country which allows abortion under certain circumstances. Christians believe that life is precious and God given and that it is wrong to kill (10 commandments). However, out of compassion they might consider an abortion if the mother has been raped or if a scan shows that the foetus is deformed. Parent / carer signature:

Task: Applying Religious Teachings to 6 mark A02 questions Many students struggle to successfully apply religious teachings to the issues. You can t just throw a religious teaching in an answer and not explain/link it to the issue. Look at the following 6 mark A02 questions below and add a Buddhist and Christian teaching for each. Make sure you explain the teaching and say how it links to the issue. Religious believers should do more to protect people s human rights. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. Refer to religious arguments in your answer. A Buddhist teaching A Christian teaching The United Kingdom should welcome all asylum seekers. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. Refer to religious arguments in your answer.
